Hello and welcome to April!

The Gardening Committee gave myself, Susie, Karla and Yilmaz many directions recently on how to landscape and plant the garden beds in the Urban area. We managed to create a couple of lovely, colourful garden beds. Next to the Coffee Shop we have started to rearrange the pots also, to add colour and foliage to the beautiful outdoor space. If you would like be get involved in any gardening projects we have, please approach Susie, myself or Yilmaz on weekends.

In addition to the flowering plants, another item has been purchased specifically for the area. A relative had given feedback via the Share Your Experience form regarding the benefits of water therapy – once again thank you for the germination of an idea! In addition to the idea, past residents’ families bequeathed money to the site which resulted in the purchase of the water feature that resident's chose. I hope all who visit the Urban area, whether it be the destination or just when walking through, enjoy the sound of water and the peace that this may provide.

The catering team, lead by Aletia and Angelo, have been enjoying producing the Autumn and Winter menu and I wish to thank the residents and relatives who provided feedback during the planning phase. I have noted some beautifully presented meals being served and enjoyed as of late. The catering team is growing their own supply of fresh herbs in a mini glasshouse and the garnishes on the meals are really stepping up a notch!

Please be aware that we have commenced a more interactive educational staff calendar this year with thanks to Katherine’s vision. This month we will be focusing on falls strategies’ and there will be an “April Falls Day”, so expect some Alice in Wonderland doubles if you visit on this day. Last month there was a dress up day related to Oral Health and Dental Care – we had some tooth fairies and dentists on site! While the dress up days are a bit of fun, we take education of staff seriously and the flow on effect to residents’ care is vital.

Please remember if you do bring in items of clothing for your loved ones that it goes to the Nurses’ stations first for labeling and not directly into the cupboard to be worn.

Until next month, all the best Laura

Facility Manager

Hello everyone,

Our program of active games; bocce, bowls, quoits, hookey, bobs and daily exercise groups, bingo, hoy, dominoes, scrabble, trivia, quizzes, Circle of Men and Men’s Workshop have been ticking along very well. A stream of entertainment including Dennis, Les on Piano, Nathaniel and Cathy Spalding at Esida’s Happy Hour and David Cheales at Esida Lodge thrilled the residents with their musical gifts during March. Our shopping trip devotees sampled the delights that Carindale Centre has to offer this month and enjoyed a different café treat before heading home.

Of course on the 17th of March St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated with all things green. The craft group made some badges and hundreds of shamrocks that were glued to a flag made from maps of Ireland to produce a very effective bunting decoration. Staff were encouraged to dress in suitable emerald attire, as did some of our residents. Little green men popped up in the strangest of places…even on the dining tables! Green iced biscuits were on the trolleys at morning tea time thanks to Chef Alitia’s efforts. Irish theme quizzes, jokes and Irish music were in plentiful supply.

Other craft activities included painting an Irish scene from a Naive perspective and the results were amazing! Well done guys. Our volunteer Robyn, hosted an “Easter” paper crafts activity on Sunday the 18th.

The Men’s Workshop have been busy completing their special meeting table and have commenced a coffee table project. Towards the end of the month they assisted with garden make-over activities in the Urban area. This task included a water feature and fresh plantings to make the area look natural – thanks guys!

A special feature this month was the Henny Penny Hatching program. A special pen was set up and established while residents watched each emerging chick over a 10 day period. This was a very rewarding and special Easter event at both Esida and Lodge, which promoted much interest and chatter about the beautiful fluffy balls of delight as they developed.

In closing, please note that we will hold our in-house ANZAC Day service on Tuesday 24th April.

Have a good Easter and keep busy everyone!

8APRIL 2018

Vacenti Vibes Issue 10

Hello and welcome to our April edition,

We are grateful to have had many great moments this month. We particularly enjoyed the movie “Finding your Feet”. The outing to the movies refreshed and revived our spirits and inspired many residents to travel again. In response to this we have applied for our passports and are getting ready for new destinations...

On the 17th March everyone at Lorocco was officially coloured by the Leprechaun and became Irish for the day. We had a fabulous high tea that involved an Irish blessing and were treated to a true Irish lunch that included beef and Guinness pie and coddle. Many tall tales, ales and jokes followed. We didn’t find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, however, the rainbow lollipops were loved by all. Our photos to the right tell the tale "To be sure, to be sure!" Everything was so green that even St Patrick would have been proud.

We are expecting a visit from the Easter bunny, the Thursday before Easter along with 26 toddlers from the local kindergarten. Lorocco is forging wonderful ties in our local community, both young and old, we are so richly rewarded through this experience.

Our exercise classes are growing daily! It's great to see the improvement in the strength of our residents and the family feedback is fabulous.

Next month Toasty Tuesdays return as we await the cooler days with relish.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Easter.

Until then, keep smiling, keep active and keep spreading kindness.

LOROCCO

Hello,

March has been a month of looking at ways to improve the connection and communication around the home. We have made improvements to the resident and relative carer area and have utilised the space for case conferences. We are also currently reviewing a monthly email update to relatives and carer’s to inform families of what is happening at Lorocco. This is in consideration to those who work during the week when the relative and carer’s meetings are held. Please advise either myself or Belinda if this is something you may be interested in receiving.

Mavis received an art decor book for Christmas last year. Mavis has been a resident of Lorocco for 8 months and her husband Roy is a resident at another Vacenti home. Mavis is 90 years old and the lovely pieces of art (seen in the photo at the bottom left of the next page) are how Mavis spends some of her time at Lorocco. Such a beautiful display!

I would also like to take the opportunity to introduce some of the staff who are not new to Lorocco but new to our new residents and families:

Chelady is our Housekeeping Supervisor at Lorocco. Chelady has been here 4 years and is a very enthusiastic fisherman on the weekends. When asked what her favourite foods are she exclaimed ‘everything!’

Jye has been with Vacenti one and half years and his favorite food is roast pork. Jye is a lover of sports and is looking forward to his wedding in November this year.

March was the month that Lorocco implemented changes to improve the care we provide through educating staff to complete the medication competency training. Some of those changes include casual staff becoming permanent and will in turn allow Registered Nurses more time within all areas of Lorocco.

As mentioned before GEMS is a staff initiative social club that is hosting an event on the 26th of May. We have very few spaces left for the upcoming shopping trip so please contact Karen, Sharon or Virginia to secure a seat. This month I was the lucky winner of the GEMs raffle, winning a bottle of wine and a lantern.

Until next month take care and care of each other,

MAREBELLO

Hello,

This month I would like to put the "spotlight” on our Registered Nurse, Saras Thaivarayan. Most of you will know Saras from her friendly smile and undying compassion for our residents, however for those of you who are not aware of this lovely lady, allow me to give you a little background on Saras.

Saras was born in Malaysia in the 1950's. Both parents were from India, however they had settled in Malaysia prior to her arrival. Saras commenced her General Nursing Training at the Mile End Hospital which was a part of the London Hospital in 1969 and finished in 1972. Saras worked for 2 years in the Klang Hospital in Malaysia and during that time she met her husband and was married. Saras returned to London in 1975 where she worked briefly, however the lure of Australia was too great and in March 1975, she and her husband migrated to Australia and settled in Melbourne. Saras worked in Melbourne for a period then the warm sun of Cairns beckoned and she and her expanding family, husband and one son, made the move north in 1976. It is after this time we were fortunate that Saras and her expanding family, now two sons, moved to Brisbane. In December 1979, Saras joined the team of Autumn Lodge at Greenslopes. Autumn Lodge was what is now known as Marebello. She witnessed the transfer from Greenslopes to Victoria Point in 2001, followed by the change to Rosevale Court and in 2014 the change of ownership and renaming to Marebello. Saras took some time off during this period to have her third child - yes another boy! Saras was the founding registered nurse for Gardenia and can still be found flitting her way around the wing today.

Congratulations Saras, 30 plus years of service to our residents is amazing and we are lucky to have you.

Until next month, stay safe.

Jenny Wright,

Facility Manager

Greetings!March has been a rather warm and very wet month! We are appreciating the air conditioner in the Rose Room, which is also looking tidier and more homely with some more comfy chairs. It’s always good to have a bit of a “spring clean”.This month we have a record number of birthdays – four residents celebrated birthdays on the 27th of March. Two residents shared a birthday on 23rd. They enjoyed a special morning tea. Happy birthday to all! In March we had some great concerts: the Tip Tops, Lachlan Barry, Chuck and Chrissy, In Accord and Daphne played piano for an appreciative audience. Our concerts are usually on a Thursday morning, so please come along and enjoy. If you come straight to the concert from morning exercises, please note we are offering morning tea in the Rose Room before the concert starts. When Lachlan Barry comes, he performs in Wisteria at morning tea time, and then in the Rose Room at 10:30am - what a trooper. The residents enjoyed cake decorating earlier this month and hearing about Lynne’s Adventure in England and Spain. We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with Irish music, making leprechaun hats and taking part in an Irish quiz, jokes and some Guinness during happy hour. Casey won the staff dress-up day – congratulations! Ireland was also the theme at Tournament of the Minds which was hosted by Blue Care’s Nandeebie home. The questions were rather hard, but we made some educated guesses. We enjoyed an outing for morning tea at the Bush Pantry café next door to Indigiscapes on the way to Capalaba. The food was lovely and the surroundings peaceful, although we couldn’t adventure outside because of the rain. In April, we have a movie outing and several entertainers booked. There will be Easter eggs for Easter Sunday, and a memorial event on 24 April, the day before Anzac Day public holiday. We encourage residents and families to attend the Food Focus Meeting April 10 and the Residents’ Meeting on April 12.

Happy Easter from the Lifestyle Team,Lynne, Jodie and Eileen

CASA DÁMORE

Hey all!

Another busy month at Casa Dámore with outings, functions and special events.

We started the month with happy hour to celebrate St. Patrick’s day, where Anita the entertainer sang Irish tunes to which the residents joyfully sung along.

Happy hour with Allan had residents Allan and Freda dancing to the music. We all loved watching them groove along.

On Tuesday the 20th we visited City hall for the Lord Mayor's Concert and listened to the Kelly Family Band where they sang Irish tunes and shared in some Irish jokes and limericks. Some of the residents had their first experience having Yum Cha, where the residents sampled different dishes that they have never had before. I was unable to convince any of the residents to try the chicken feet dish that was on the menu.

We have started the garden club this month to get the level 3 garden area looking green and beautiful ready for when we start using the area for functions throughout the year. To assist with this, we are also looking for volunteers to come along and help assist with beautifying the veranda space for resident's and family’s enjoyment.

Circle of Men met this month, shared pizza and chatted about secret men’s business.

We had 2 successful Farmer's Markets and residents joined in a cooking session to make the popular lemon butter that sold like hot cakes. We are also running an Easter raffle that will be drawn on the 29th April. Tickets can be purchased at reception.

That's all for now. Looking forward to making more memories in April with the residents. As always, family and friends are welcome to join. Please see the activity planner found on site or on the Vacenti website.

See you around!

Keep smiling and have a great month.

Marieann Edgell,

Leisure and Lifestyle Officer

LifestyleHi Everyone and welcome to our April update from Casa Dámore.

I hope you have all had a memorable Easter with family and friends.

During March we have been interviewing candidates for our Lifestyle Officer position. This position will work along side our Lifestyle Coordinator, Marieann Edgell. The expansion of our team will allow us to program additional opportunities for our residents. I’m excited to advise we have a new employee, Lauren Hay, joining our team on the 9th April.

If you’re family or friend of someone at Casa Dámore and would like to be involved as a volunteer, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with either myself or Marieann to discuss ways you can be involved.

Our Farmers Markets are continuing and becoming a popular fortnightly event. Our next market is scheduled for Thursday 12th April at 1:30pm – come along and enjoy the afternoon with us.

During the initial stages of the building project happening next door to Casa, the footpath to Cavendish Road has been closed. We are suggesting to residents heading out for a walk, to go down Park Street, turn left into Strangman Terrace, then left Beresford Terrace and left again onto Goring Street to head up to Cavendish Road.

A reminder to visitors parking in our basement car park, there is a No Right Turn sign at our driveway. Please remember to turn left onto Park Road and you can drive to the bottom of the road and head back up.

Is there something you would like to let us know? Please do not hesitate to get in touch as we welcome your feedback. You can do this through our Share Your Experience form, by telephone, email or in person.

Catch you next month!

Hello all,

Our admissions have increased with 40 residents living across the four levels of suites and in the Aged Care apartments. Our Open Day on the 25th March was very successful with loads of positive feedback about Portofino. If you were unable to attend our Open Day but would like to see the services we offer at Portofino, please call Lynny or Alison on 0429 139 803 or 0447 717 992 respectively, and they will arrange a time to show you around.

The staff member I would like to introduce you to this edition is Diana Macharia. Diana started with our initial induction group in November/December, however, she has been at other Vacenti sites since then gaining valuable experience. Please say hello to Diana when you see her. She has cemented her place as a valuable addition to the team.

As we are now moving into flu season, I would like to ask that family or friends to postpone their visit if they are feeling unwell. There is also a hand sanitiser available on each level and entrance when entering or leaving the building for your use.

In other news I will be on leave from the 4th of April, returning to work on the 16th of April. I am volunteering at the Commonwealth Games and I have attached a photo of me in the snazzy volunteer uniform and also a picture of myself with Borobi the mascot that was taken on our training day. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the residents on my return. In my absence Lisi Mopfu - Clinical Manager will be happy to assist you.

Ciao,

Ian G Byron

Manager – Portofino

PORTOFINO

Fishing frenzy or fiasco?

Residents created brightly coloured, laminated, magnetic fish that sat on our blue tarpaulin pond on the Piazza floor. We began to fish from Level 1, and, like many great fishing stories, disaster struck the first cast as the magnet on the end of our line hit the ground and shattered! As we reeled in the line and it became hopelessly tangled! Norman was our hero spending 20 minutes getting that sorted. Finally, we were ready to fish again and enjoyed ‘hooking’ a few beauties.

Portofino Presents Music

Joining the crowd for the Lord Mayor’s Tuesday lunchtime concerts has been a highlight this month. We enjoyed the music of the Muses Trio celebrating International Women’s Day and The Kelly Family Band who brought the Irish folk music flavour just after St Patrick’s Day. Next month there’s a strong focus on jazz, a genre favourite for many of our residents, so we’ll be making the most of April’s selection too.

April will see our first live entertainment as Judy James joins us for some old-time music and singing.

The privilege of partnering in Palliative Care

Palliative care – not the upbeat topic we’re used to in Vacenti Vibes lifestyle column – but close to my heart as my Dad passed away at Portofino in March. I want to highlight the beautiful way in which my Dad and family were cared for by staff at Portofino through Dad’s last days. It’s all part of the lifestyle and clinical care picture.

Making Dad comfortable went further than medication; it was demonstrated in the numerous times he was asked if there was anything he would like. Helping Mum through those hard days meant daughters were able to sleep over, a very necessary reassurance at a most difficult time. Staff regularly and frequently asked family if anything more was needed.

In our multicultural aged care setting, I was touched by the sincerest of enquiries phrased as sensitively as possible, “I’m not sure what the custom in Australia is, would you like to…?” Staff wanted to offer the family the opportunity to participate in caring for Dad through his last days, moments and beyond, understanding that rituals and hands-on care can be significant in the grief process. Portofino allowed us to truly be partners in caring.

See you next month,

Vacenti Vibes Issue 10

Hello everyone,

March was a very busy month for us! On Saturday the 10th of March we had the wonderful Sing Australia Choir come to Con Noi to entertain us. The choir sang some great old songs intermingled with soloists.

On the 13th of March, we had the Fun Over 50’s come along to present many travel programs. They brought with them their brand new “Diamond Tina Bus” and rolled out the red carpet - literally. All the residents dressed up for the occasion. After lunch, it was time to board the bus. The best dressed couple were presented with a $500.00 voucher toward their next trip. The winners were Maurice and Judith Ellem. They plan to travel to Tasmania. Rob and Julie Anne took the residents on a coach tour in the Diamond Tina.

St Patrick’s Day was celebrated at Con Noi with Happy Hour on the 16th of March. The residents had a great time singing the Irish Songs while drinking Guinness and a few “soft drinks”. This was the first time, other than for concert’s, the piano was used for Happy Hour.

On the 20th of March, Portofino Fashions returned to Con Noi with their latest fashion show. Some 50 residents and friends enjoyed the event. We were thankful that 5 residents volunteered their time as models. As always, an international model named “Jezebel” showed off her new line of clothing. As a gesture of support, Portofino Fashions donated $400.00 to the residents activities. They also donated a $50.00 open order on fashions to be raffled which raised $172.00. It was a wonderful morning.

The Aquanauts are back on track with Dee coming on a weekly basis. The picture shows the eager crew before entering the water for the first session.

The 22nd of March was our annual fire drill and evacuation demonstration. Jon Eaton explained the use of fire extinguishers and the evacuation of the building. This was timed at 1.56 minutes. This is an annual education program for all residents.

On the 25th of March, a large group of residents visited Portofino Hamilton to attend the Open Day. We were lucky to be taken on a personal tour by Mario! It was a fantastic day that we all enjoyed very much.

We continue to receive enquiries regarding apartments at Con Noi. Come on down and see for yourself. Check our web page and also the Con Noi video. Please call Allen on 0418 588 468 to make an appointment.

When is Anzac Day?

Anzac Day falls on the 25th of April each year. The 25th of April was officially named Anzac Day in 1916.

What does 'ANZAC' stand for?

'ANZAC' stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

On the 25th of April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day.

What does Anzac Day mean today?

With the coming of the Second World War, ANZAC Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war. The meaning of Anzac Day today includes the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations.

Why is this day special to Australians?

On the morning of 25 April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and an ally of Germany.

The Anzacs landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. Their plan to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months.

At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing on Gallipoli and the events that followed had a profound impact on Australians at home. The 25th of April soon became the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

The Anzacs were courageous and although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy.

Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national commemorative occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Two men are cutting tree's in a forest with Axes. Every two hours one of the men stops and has a 10 minute break and the other continues to work. They do this all day, the same man taking a break every two hours whilst the other man does not and keeps working. At the end of the day the man who took the breaks has cut more timber than the man who worked all the way through. The man who didn't take a break couldn't believe it and asks "How did you cut more timber than me, even though I worked all the day through whilst you took breaks?". The man who took the breaks responded "You may have worked all day, but every time I took a break I sharpened my Axe..."It's important to take breaks / rests in life. If you keep going at 120% all the time you'll end up exerting more effort in during tasks than you would if you took a break. Take the time to be sharp and fully present in the tasks you need to accomplish.
