Congratulations to

KEI Employee, Miguel Hernandez!

Three Hendersonville Public Works staff members have

earned MVP of the Year honors for their efforts going above and beyond to serve city residents.

In 2018, 140 MVP nominations were submitted and every four months, three were chosen as quarterly MVPs. From these, the Service Excellence Design Team selected the 2018 MVP of the Year.

The three Public Works employees share the honor of MVP of the Year, as it was a group effort, and were recognized during the City Council meeting Thursday.

Last year, Cheryl Jones, a Town Forest subdivision resident, called to thank Chris Merbitz, Miguel Hernandez and Anthony Schaeffer. The three men took the time to dance and entertain her daughter while they were performing their normal duties. Jones’ daughter enjoys seeing the solid waste truck come by her house and this crew took a moment to brighten the little girl’s day.

MVPs of the Year receive a certificate signed by the mayor, recognition at the council meeting and a $500 reward, and their names will be included on a plaque. Between the three of them, Merbitz, Hernandez and Schaeffer received 11 MVP nominations during 2018. (Hendersonville Times-News)

FORMAT: Chapman Alternate Shot §

CHAPMAN: Also known as Pinehurst, this 2

man-team format requires teammates to both tee

off and then switch balls. After playing the second

shots, the best ball is selected and an alternate shot

format is played until the ball is holed with the player

whose second shot was not selected hitting the

teams third stroke.

TEES PLAYED: Men play the GOLD or WHITE Tees Women play the RED Tees

HANDICAPS: “A Player” receives 60% of handicap

“B Player” receives 40% of handicap

Same Gender – Multi Tees: Different tees usually have

different ratings. Since a USGA Course Rating reflects the

probable scores of a scratch golfer, the higher-rated

course is more difficult, and the player playing from the set

of tees with the higher USGA Course Rating receives

additional stroke(s) equal to the difference between each

USGA Course Rating, with the resulting figure rounded off

to the nearest whole number (.5 or more is rounded

upward). (See Decision 3-5/1.)

MGA News Chip Pryde

The chilly weather did not let up in the beginning of March but we did get back to scheduled MGA games. We also had a fun event with the KCC St Patrick’s day shotgun shamble. April will bring us the beginning of the official MGA season with our weekly games, tournaments and the interclub matches. Spring has finally come to Flat Rock.

Our match on March 7 was an individual quota format played in chilly weather. The winner was Doug Blankman and 2nd place went to Dennis O’Connor. The March 14 game was a 4 person team match using a Cha Cha format. The weather forecast was for rain but it held off all day. The winning team was Gary Gallagher, Tommy Rascoe, Bob Paulsen and Frank Felsburg.

I am continuing to show our upcoming season highlights on the schedule which can also be accessed on the KCC website on our calendar. The club events are also shown on the club calendar.

MGA Season: April 11 Opening Day May 9 President’s Cup May 23 President’s Cup finals June 6 - 7 Team Championship July 11 - 12 Two Man Ringer August 8 - 9 Individual Championship August 29 Par 3 September 12 Closing Day

Interclub Match Courses Cliffs Valley 5/22 Green Valley 6/12 Kenmure 7/18 Keowee Key TBD as they are undergoing a course renovation and we likely play at another course.

Carolina CC Home & Home Kenmure 5/30 Carolina CC 8/21

When we do get on the course please take care of our course by fixing the divots, rake the sand traps after you escape and repair the ball marks on the greens. Under the new rules you can repair marks in the path of your putt.

We have been playing with the new USGA rules for three months. Many of us attended the rules seminar hosted by Luke Lovell. The thrust is to simplify rules where possible, allow an option to the previous out of bounds rule, a new rule for how you can play a ball after taking out of a penalty area, drop a ball from knee height instead of from our shoulder, you can leave a flag in when putting and there is no penalty for causing the accidental movement of a ball with a rule calling for replacing the ball to its original position. I think many found the changes to be a little short of easier to understand and follow on the course. I have noticed that most of us have decided to leave the flag in while trying longer putts and take it out when you get close. Another issue we have been reminded of is to be diligent about posting your scores. The pro shop will post MGA scores. I hope to see all of our MGA members on the course soon.

WGA MUSINGS Karen S. Skelton

As I write, I am not so sure winter really is over but according to the calendar, it will be Spring by the time you read this - you’ll have dug out your team shirt, your clubs will be cleaned, golf balls marked, tees and ball markers at the ready, and every pocket in your bag cleaned out and restocked with rain jacket/pants, extra gloves, and maybe an extra pair or two of socks just in case. We have waited long enough: LET THE SEASON BEGIN! Is it April 9 yet? Opening Day seems to be a long time coming, yet we know from past experience that it was just yesterday that it was Closing Day. Well, the new season is here and there’s a lot on the horizon. The Opening Day game will be a 14-hole shotgun, 9- and 18-holers combined, Step-Aside Scramble followed by lunch and our Welcome meeting. This game is non-postable but it’s sure to be a lot of fun and lunch will be delicious! This will be a short month for golf since aeration is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, the 15th and 16th; however, WCWGA will be playing at Thornblade on the 16th. If you are interested in playing in WCWGA events and have questions, please contact LaVonne McKay ([email protected]). To qualify for play, you must be a member of KCC and WGA, and have a handicap of 33 or less. The cost to join is $30; each tournament is $60 and includes golf, lunch, and prizes. Checks should be written to WCWGA and either given to LaVonne or attached to the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the locker room. Games scheduled for the remainder of April are Individual/Tee to Green (count strokes only from tee to green) scheduled for the 23rd – low gross/low net winners; non-postable - and on the 30th, Team/One Net Best Ball. This game is postable. If you are new to golf or new to Kenmure (or both), and would like to talk about or play golf within WGA, please contact Debbie Dunderdale ([email protected]), Chair, Fairway Friends. We also invite you to take a look at our website – within Kenmure.com, click on Golf then KWGA. There you will find a treasure trove of information including the Club golf calendar. And speaking of calendars, please mark yours: Opening Day: April 9, 2019, 9:30 Shotgun followed by lunch. Sign up for both on the website by Sunday noon on the 7th. If you plan to compete in the Ringer competition this year, bring $2.00 to lunch. Questions? Please feel free to contact any of our KWGA 2019 Board:

President - Lisa Caudle ([email protected]) Vice President – Elaine Hessong ([email protected]) Secretary – Candace Lewis ([email protected]) Treasurer – Jeanne Sudderth ([email protected])

We cannot wait to see you on the tee!

WATER AEROBICS & POOL NEWS

Spring has sprung! Time for lots of outdoor activities and lots of sore muscles. One of the best ways to ease into vigorous activity or to recover from 'overdoing' is to do some type of water exercise. We are lucky to have an indoor pool. Why not make use of it? Whether you swim or do water aerobics, water exercise is good for you! Our free water aerobics class is held each weekday morning from 8:30 to 9:30. This class is led by a group of dedicated volunteers. It is perfect for beginners and for those who have already done water exercise. As you start out we have equipment you may borrow. The pool is open each day from 5:00am to 10:00 pm. The pool is reserved for water aerobics class from 8:30-9:30 Monday-Friday. 'Adult Swim' is 10:00 – 11:00 each morning. At all other times, the pool is available for 'Open Swim'. (Please check “The View” for pool cleaning hours.) Remember to sign in using your member number. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Emmy Weissman (692-8657). Coming soon...the outdoor pool is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend!

PICKLEBALL

A Pickleball clinic will be offered in mid to late April for all Sports & Golf members. It is open to all that want to learn how to play or to refresh your skills. Pickleball is a great cardio vascular sport that keeps you active and may help you lose those pounds you gained during the winter. It’s also a chance to meet other Kenmure residents. The clinic will be offered by a skilled instructor. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport worldwide especially in the 60 and over crowd. All you need is a good pair of tennis or volleyball shoes and a desire to learn. There will be a small fee that can be charged to your club membership account. More details as to date, time and cost will be forthcoming. Most people find that once you learn the basics, you are ready to play the game. If you have an interest in learning this great game please contact Bob Boek at [email protected] or call 785-3774.

KCC GOURMET WINE DINNER TUESDAY JUNE 11th, 2019

On Tuesday evening June 11th we will be honored to present the fabulous wines of Ram's Gate Winery of Sonoma County, California. Ram's Gate opened in the fall of 2011as a place to pause, to stop and savor some of the fantastic wines of California from some of the most sought-after prestigious vineyards. The winemaking team approaches winemaking as a way to showcase the signature of a truly unique site, often as specific as a few rows within a vineyard, giving "terroir" and "microclimates" a truly new meaning!! Ram's Gate has quickly risen to the top of wine critics' list of small-production super-focused wines. They are among the very few Certified Sustainable Vineyards. The Ram's Gate team rarely wanders 'off the reservation', but have gladly agreed to join us in Kenmure for a truly unique Gourmet Wine Dinner. We are fortunate to have as our special guest Wine Navigator, Greg Miller, UC Davis graduate in viticulture and enology and Ram's Gate Estate Director, who will guide us through some of the finest wines paired with some of the best food. This is one you will NOT want to miss, so....y'all know what to do!!!!

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Sam Ritter, KCC Sommelier
