Prayer

Father God,

As we say farewell

to our loved ones

we entrust them

into your care. We

pray for happiness

and joy to be ahead

of them, for wisdom

and guidance to be

beside them, and

for grace and truth

to be behind them,

pushing them

onwards into your

goodness. We know

that you will

always love and

protect them,

wherever they go.

Amen.

We are quickly approaching the mid-quarter of the fourth quarter at Cedar Catholic. It has been a great year for our students as they have grown in knowledge and faith through the school year. Looking back at the year, it feels like we were just sending the seniors on their beginning of the school year retreat and now, a few short months later, we will be sending them across the stage at graduation.

Cedar Catholic has a great deal to be proud of with the academic and spiritual growth of our students. The Mid State Conference recently released its Conference Academic Team. To be a member of this team you have to be a junior or senior and score at least a 26 on the ACT. This year Cedar Catholic placed a total of 18 students on the Mid State Conference Academic Team. This included 8 seniors and

10 juniors. Cedar Catho-lic had more students represented on this team than any other conference school. This is a true reflection of the collaborative effort between our students, teachers, and parents in providing a great education. Congratula-tions to these students.

The 2018 Catholic Schools Gala took place on March 17. A big “Thank you” to all the people that helped make this event a success. The support for our Catholic Schools from this night is important for the continued success or our schools and the opportunity they provide for our students. The support from all the peo-ple that create this success is truly appreciated.

On May 12 the class of 2018 will graduate from Cedar Catholic. This year’s senior class has had a tremendous amount of success during their time at Cedar Catholic. They

have been true models of the Faith to the rest of the students in the school. Their leadership will be missed. We wish them the best as they continue their journey.

As the end of this school year quickly approaches, I find myself reflecting on a conversation that took place during a Religion class many years ago. This class was taught by Monsignor Werner and the topic was vocations. Monsignor Werner was asked “how will we know what God is calling us to do in our lives”. He told the class that they should pray and ask God for guidance. This advice is something that is important this time of year as our seniors graduate and our underclassmen continue to grow. Please pray for all of our students that they be guided by God’s will in the work they do in their lives.

A Bittersweet Farewell

Cedar Catholic will be saying goodbye to several staff at the end of the school year. Principal Terry Kathol will be departing for Lincoln Pius X to serve as their assistant principal. Science teacher Lily Lam will be leaving to join her fiancé in Texas. Technology teacher Laura Neuhalfen will be leav-ing to join her family as a stay-at-home mom. Business manager Marce Kollars and Mathematics teacher Mary Beth Weier will be retiring come May. Below is a short summary of their time here at Cedar and their plans for the future.

Marce Kollars has been serving our school as the business manager since January of 1996.

Her daily duties change with the seasons. During basketball season she counts gates and pays the referees. She deals with payroll once a month, and is in charge of scholarships and bookkeeping.

Marce says that a lot has changed at Cedar Catholic since she has started here. Some of

those things consist of five new principals, many new teachers, and the most significant change is the school building. Marce has had several wonderful memories here at Cedar. She says, “Two of our kids were here when I began. I loved seeing them at school. Three of our grandchildren have been here in recent years, but the most significant memories of all came when I was a student here.” Kollars looks forward to relaxing more, spending time with family, and getting to travel more.

Also retiring is Mary Beth Weier, a Mathematics and Science teacher. She has been teaching

at Cedar since August of 1972. She says the biggest change since she started teaching is the use of technology in the classroom. Even though she is retiring, she says she will always remember the great staff, faculty, students, and parents she has met in her years here. The activities she has been apart of are: Pep Club, cheerleading, track, prom, and the National Honor Society Chapter. Her favorite topic to teach is Algebra. She is looking forward to spending time with her family, reading, scrapbooking, and traveling.

Cedar is sure going to miss all of these great people that were a part of our Cedar Catholic

family. We wish them good luck in their future endeavors! God Bless.

Cedar Hosts Youth Rally: Gaudium Et Spes

Nearly five hundred students from the local Catholic

schools gathered together for a day long retreat on Wednes-

day, February 28th. The schools included Holy Trinity Ele-

mentary, Cedar Catholic, East and West Catholic, Osmond

St. Mary’s, and St. Rose of Crofton. The retreat was titled

Gaudium Et Specs, Latin for “Hopes and Joys of Our

Times.”

The day began with the priests and students of the

deanery celebrating Mass. Fr. Jim Keiter was the homilist

and spoke about the Four Marks of the Church, highlighting

“One Church”. He also stressed the importance of building

bridges in our lives in regards to our relationships with oth-

ers.

Following Mass, the students gathered at the Msgr.

Werner Center. They were split into thirty-eight groups.

Each group was led by two Cedar Catholic students. Danny

Leger, a youth minister and missionary, led the students in

song throughout the day, and priests from the deanery gave

talks.

Fr. Eric Olsen was the first speaker, and he talked

about encountering Jesus most deeply through the Mass.

Marie Rokusek added, “I like how Fr. Olsen compared

scripture to love letters from God.” The Mass shows how

much God infinitely loves us.

The Twelve Apostles were the first to evangelize the

faith. Fr. Forget of Osmond spoke about the Apostles and

how we as Catholics should continue to spread the teachings

of Christ. This can be done by reflecting the love of Christ

onto others by our words and actions. He also shared his

life-changing encounters with two very important evangeliz-

ers, St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. Pope John Paul II.

Mercy was the topic of the last talk given by Fr. Po-

draza of Crofton. Since we have received mercy from God,

we are called to be merciful in all things and to all people.

Because we have been forgiven, we are called to forgive all

wrongs against us. As merciful Christians, we are called to

show mercy just as Christ showed us mercy.

The retreat ended with Adoration and Benediction

of the Blessed Sacrament. Every student knelt on the gym

floor as Fr. Korte carried the monstrance bearing the Blessed

Sacrament and processed through the rows of students. The

students held little lights to signify that they were ready for

the Holy Spirit to enter their lives. With the overhead lights

turned off, the scene was breathtaking. Junior Brianna Pfund

said, “I believe everyone felt Jesus spiritually through the

songs and prayers we shared together.” The closing hymn

was “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name.”

Musical performer Danny Ledger calls some volunteers

up to the stage to help him worship our Lord Jesus

Christ through song.

Holy Trinity Parish Priest Father Owen Korte reads

scripture during Benediction.

Students from East Catholic and Saint Rose work on

drawing images that represent the day.

Students participate in the worship song called “Lord I Lift Your

Name on High” with action movements to the lyrics.

Students accepting Jesus Christ in the form of body and blood

before they began the retreat.

Students brainstorm and work together to create their group

poster.

Senior Seth Wiebelhaus holds up an image that his group mem-

bers had to explain how they see God.

Cedar Catholic and Holy Trinity students place hands on poster to

be traced for their group poster. Retreat participants open their hands to signify the willingness of

God into their hearts.

Father Owen Korte prepares students for their fun-filled day. Father Eric Olsen, priest of Sacred Heart, Peter and Paul, and

Immaculate Conception, talks about how encountering Jesus in the

Mass is very rewarding.

Norfolk on March 21st. The team finished in 3rd place out of 17 Class C schools.

After winning the C2-5 District Championship verse Ainsworth on February 23rd, 2018, the girls made their

first trip to State since 2011. The girls had only a few days to prepare for their first game down at State versus Hasting St

Cecilia, who was the number one seed in the tournament. Before the team left for State on Wednesday, February 28th,

the school held a pep rally and the girls received gifts from their parents. That night, before they left, the parents hosted a

pot luck for the girls and then sent them on their way to Lincoln, where they stayed at the Fairfield: Marriott Hotel. That

night the girls relaxed in their rooms, so they were ready for the big game.

The next day was gameday! After going to Malcom High School for a run through, and getting Subway, the girls

headed to Lincoln Northwest for their game. At 2:30 p.m., they began their game versus the Hasting St Cecilia

Hawkettes, battling with them for most of the game. They came back from a 10 point deficit in the 1st quarter to only

being behind by 3 points going into halftime. The game went back and forth in the 3rd and 4th quarters but unfortunately

the Hawkettes come up on top. The Lady Trojans ended their season 16-9.
