About May’s Dinner Speaker James D. Snyder Jim Snyder is an author/historian based in Tequesta,

FL. His first two books were the historical novel All

God’s Children (1999) and a history, The Faith and the

Power (2002). Both illuminate the murky forty years

following the crucifixion of Jesus by taking into ac-

count Roman, Jewish, Greek and Christian writings of

the first century. The Faith and the Power was runner-

up for the Benjamin Franklin Award for the best book

on religion in 2003.

In 2002 Snyder authored Life and Death on the

Loxahatchee: The Story of Trapper Nelson, a book that

has captivated South Florida and won the silver (2nd)

prize in the Florida Publisher’s Association book-of-

the-year awards. His 4th book, published in November

2003, is a pictorial history of Jupiter-Tequesta entitled Five Thousand Years on the Loxahatchee.

In 2005 Snyder authored Black Gold and Silver Sands, A Pictorial History of Agriculture in

Palm Beach County. Published by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, the book tells of

the courage of farm families over 150 years as they braved frosts, floods, hurricanes and the

Great Depression to create one of the nation’s most thriving agribusiness counties.

His most recent book is A Light in the Wilderness: The Story of Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and

the Southeast Florida Frontier. It begins by explaining why planners in Washington would build

a lighthouse in a largely unexplored wilderness and ends in 1890 when Jupiter and its light-

house became the terminus for a thriving steamboat trade.

Before his second life as an author Snyder was the founding chairman and CEO of Enterprise

Communications Inc. (ECI), Washington-based publishers of national business magazines and

sponsors of related conferences. ECI was acquired by The Thomson-Reuters Corp in 1997.

Snyder was raised in Evanston, IL and graduated from Northwestern University in 1958 with

a bachelor's degree from its Medill School of Journalism. He later received a master's degree in

political science from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

In 1964, after 2 years as a White House communications officer specializing in national secu-

rity affairs, he formed an independent Washington news bureau to serve publishers of business

& medical magazines. The firm, known then as Snyder Associates Inc., soon became the largest

independent editorial organization in Washington, representing more than 40 periodicals. They

included such leaders in their respective fields as Variety, Sales & Marketing Management, Mod-

ern Medicine and Progressive Grocer. During this period Snyder also wrote for such publications

as Smithsonian, Pa-

rade and Harvard

Business Review.

In 1985 the company

was renamed Enter-

prise Communications

and began publishing

its own business maga-

zines. In rapid succes-

sion, ECI launched

Financial Product

News, Employee Benefit

News, Veterinary Prod-

uct News, Environment

Today and Corporate

University Review.

Today Snyder lives

on Loxahatchee River

in Tequesta and is

active in organizations

to protect its unique

character. He was

board chairman of the

Jupiter Inlet Light-

house and Museum.

He serves on the

boards of Friends of

Jonathan Dickinson

State Park, was a gov-

ernor's appointment to

the Florida Historical

Commission and is an

elected commissioner

of the Loxahatchee

River Environmental

Control District.

From the Commander:

Joyce Newman, S It is hard to believe that

my year as Squadron Com-

mander is coming to an

end. It has been a reward-

ing and memorable experi-

ence. The many successes

we had during my com-

mand were directly attrib-

utable to the involvement

of our members and the

extraordinary leadership of our Bridge officers, depart-

ment heads and committees.

Our cooperative charting and vessel safety check ef-

forts have produced numerous District 8 awards and na-

tional recognition. Our three Vessel Safety Check exam-

iners provided forty-four VSC’s. Our Cooperative Chart-

ing efforts from Hobe Sound to Boca Raton Inlet provided

important information to NOAA’s chart maintenance pro-

grams. I am proud that our Squadron has appeared on

NOAA’s Honor Roll for twenty-four years.

Our Squadron membership now stands at 276, a testa-

ment in large part to the success of our ABC course offer-

ings, the hard work of our sixty-four merit mark mem-

bers and the involvement of those of you who have stayed

actively engaged in our Squadron’s civic, educational and

social activities.

We have had a particularly productive year with out-

standing educational offerings. The America’s Boating

Course not only promoted safe boating, but also served as

a port of entry for new members who continued their

boating education with advanced and elective courses—a

win-win proposition for both students and our Squadron.

This last year, we offered all USPS advanced courses ex-

cept for Navigation and every USPS elective course. We

have continued our efforts to add on-water components to

our course offerings. We have five qualified members as

trainers for Boat Operator Certification (BOC) and On-

Water-Training (OWT) programs. Fourteen seminars

were offered and nine were taught. We introduced a

modified Partner’s in Command Seminar with an on-

water component. We are expanding our course syllabi to

include kayak and canoe components.

We have actively engaged in community outreach ef-

forts. For example, Assistant Educational Officer, 1st/ Lt

John Litwinka, AP, successfully taught Engine Mainte-

nance to fourteen members of the Fish and Wildlife Ser-

vice. Our Educational Officer Lt/C (P/C) Rose Moskowitz,

JN, participated in Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale dur-

ing a two day Women’s Seminar on Boating and reported

her recommendations to National. At a Kids Fest in Octo-

ber, P/D/C Gary Ferguson, JN, Liz Loeffler, P, and

D/Lt Allan Furtado, SN, taught more than 200 kids how

to use life jackets. Squadron member David Cross, AP,

provided the small boat and West Marine donated the life

jackets for the event. The event was written up in the

current ENSIGN magazine.

We partnered with North Palm Beach Yacht Club to

present a North Palm Beach Heritage theatre/dinner

show. We also partnered with Duffy’s Restaurant on

Clematis Street and manned a booth near the entrance

to the Palm Beach Boat show, where we handed out

flyers and free ABC coupons. As a result of our efforts,

42 people signed up for the

course.

Our Squadron was pre-

sented with Proclamations

from the Palm Beach County

Board of County Commission-

ers and the Mayor of the Vil-

lage of North Palm Beach de-

claring 19 - 25 May 2013 Safe

Boating Week. During Safe

Boating Week our Squadron

booth will be at the West Ma-

rine Store to hand out flyers

and free ABC course coupons.

P/R/C Robert Malone, SN, Edward Voit, Jr., AP, and

Ben Swanka, AP, received 50 year membership awards.

Nat’l Chaplain Rodney Landsman, AP, and Stephen

Leek, P, received 25 year membership awards. P/C Ken

MacPherson, AP, who passed away 27 January 2013

would have received the 25 merit mark Lifetime Mem-

bership Award. Stephen Baker, N, received the Certifi-

cate of Educational Proficiency for successfully complet-

ing the grade of Advance Piloting or higher and three

elective courses. The Squadron received the

P/C/C William D. Selden IV Member Involvement

Retention Award and the Doing it Right Award.

The Afterdeck News and our Squadron Website

received the Distinctive Communicator Awards.

Eleven of our members serve in District and six others

serve in National positions. D/Lt/C (P/C) Mary Dodd, SN,

moved from District Administrative Officer to District

Executive Officer.

Our on-land and on-water social activities have been

many. In accordance with our bylaws, we held bridge

meetings twelve times in the last year and General

Membership Dinner meetings each month except

July and August.

Thanks to the considerable efforts of Charles

Giambalvo, P, we are digitally upgrading our

headquarters so that we can offer remote classroom

and meeting services.

Yes, we are a vibrant, active squadron with much to be proud of!

The 9 acre facility has 1.5 miles of wet slips which can

accommodate yachts up to 300´ although draft restric-

the last 18 months 377 separate projects were completed

with nearly 40% over 160´.

The Yachts arrive for their refit via the Lake Worth

from painting to engine repairs is beyond the capabilities

of the 260 skilled Rybovich employees and 300 or so sub-

A Neighbor of Interest: RYBOVICH BOAT WORKS

by David Cross, AP

Below is an aerial view of the Rybovich and Sons marina

and repair yard which Bill Eldridge and your reporter

toured in early March. IT WILL NOT GIVE YOU THE

SLIGHTEST HINT OF THE AMAZING VIEW FROM

SEA LEVEL.

“Gob smacked” is a peculiar British expression for being

unexpectedly introduced to a particularly amazing situa-

tion. Opening the rear door of the Rybovich office build-

ing on North Flagler Drive presented us with a “gob

smacking” event. Row upon row of super-yachts in all

shapes and sizes lined up almost as far as the eye could

see. Our guide Carlos Vidueira, Executive V.P. Opera-

tions describe them as “floating, moving luxury man-

sions”. We see them, individually, plying the inlet and

intracoastal, but ‘up close and personal’ with 53 exam-

ples is quite a different experience. Awe inspiring comes

to mind.

Mega-yacht size does not stop at 260´ so plans are

afoot to expand availability to 400´. This will be accom-

Beach. The permitting process is already on-going and

may last for 2-3 years. Respect for the environment is

paramount.

We came away with new insight into the world of

mega-yachts. A world far removed from our humble (but

happy!) existence with lesser craft. The realization that

there are many individuals that can personally own such

behemoths was somehow brought closer to home after

our visit and a certain level of amazement still lingers.

We felt pride in having the internationally acclaimed

seeing mighty 400 footers powering up the inlet on their

way to re-birth.

Join Us. Become a 2013 SQUADRON BOOSTER We are the Palm Beach Sail & Power Squadron. We offer state of the art boating and marine courses that are taught by first rate instructors and provide important informational services to the area’s boat community. Unfortunately our dues and educational sales do not cover all current expenses, let alone innovative programs. Generous contributions by our Squadron Boosters allows us to continue meeting our commitment to boating excellence and safety. Dues for most members are not tax deductible. Contributions (as in “Squadron Booster”) are tax deductible. The IRS has declared that the Squadron is a “qualified organization” under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. Of course, follow your tax adviser’s advice. We respect your privacy as much as your generosity. If you do not wish to have your name published in our list of contribu-tors you can make an anonymous gift. You may make a gift on behalf of a friend or colleague e.g., Ken MacPherson, or for a project, e.g., equipment or an event. However you do it—please, Become a SQUADRON BOOSTER !

April’s Dinner Meeting featured “conquistador”, Steve Kruspe

Eleanor Lechtenberg and Max Cohen landed 10 bonitos up to 9 lb

trolling during the morn-ing of Tuesday, 16 April. It was her first deep sea

fishing experience. Bonitos are great “sport”

to catch though not great for the table.

Snowbirds (and other address changes) . . . Don’t Let This Happen to You! Please don’t forget to notify database Chair Bill Eldridge (561-863-1461)([email protected]) as to the date you will be going North, your latest Northern address, and your expected return date. Since we have no way to automate these changes, we depend on you to help us keep you informed. The post office charges the squad-ron $0.50 to tell the squadron you are not at the current address (and throws away your nice, colorful Afterdeck and requires us to remove you from the mailing list until a valid address is provided). During the interim, here’s hoping that you have a great summer. Drop us a note (and maybe some pictures) so your Florida Squadron friends can stay up to date with all your doings!
