From The Desk of Father Jon
Towards the Healing of Wounds
In our life in Christ, we often times are in various stages of healing. The wounds we bare come from different sources, but the root of them all is the evil one. Ever since the fall of mankind in Paradise and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, mankind has suffered afflictions.
As Orthodox Christians, we know that healing is possible through the saving Passion of Christ on the Cross, and His glorious Resurrection on the third day. Jesus is the last blood sacrifice, the living sacrifice, the true and holy Pascha, the One who takes away the sins of the world. We are drawing near to the Great and Holy Week. Let us seek out the healing that comes to us by the grace of God in the sacraments, the holy mysteries of our Orthodox Church. First, if you have not set aside time for confession, please come early or stay late to any of the services between now and Holy Week. You can also call my cell phone and set a time to confess and be forgiven. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is waiting for you with open arms! There are no words to describe the joy and the elevation of your soul that comes after God’s blessed forgiveness. Second, make sure you attend Holy Unction on Wednesday afternoon or the Bridegroom Orthros on Wednesday evening. In the Holy Unction service you will hear all the mercies of God in the readings of the Epistles and Gospels, as well as the blessed hymnology. Please consider all your sins and ask God to wash all blemishes from your soul and body in the anointing with the Holy Unction. Third, come and renew your soul by partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. Make certain to forgive and seek forgiveness from all around us. Let all offenses be let loose. Let all grudges be washed away with tears. May the grace of God’s healing be given to you by striving to approach for Holy Communion in humility. Lastly, I know that many of us have been away from God for some time. I have a message for you. YOUR EXILE IS OVER! It is too late to wait! Like the Prodigal Son, our Father in Heaven will receive you back. I am throwing out the life preserver – Come back to the Orthodox Church and find healing and peace. Jesus said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” For all who are not currently in good standing in the Church, I say, “Let me help you be reconciled.” Healing is a blessed experience. It brings peace and light to the soul. If you need to be married in the Orthodox Church, come to the office and let us find a date. If you need a Church divorce, come to the office and let us get started on the paperwork. If you need forgiveness, come to confession. If your current spiritual circumstances deem that you refrain from participating in the sacraments, then run, don’t walk, to the church so I can help you. I will not rest until all that can and should be done, IS done. Our love for God and each other should know no bounds. Please seek out God’s healing grace as soon as possible.
Καλό Πάσχα καὶ καλή Ἀνἀσταση! – Fr. Jon Emanuelson

From Emanuel Miliotis,Parish Council President
Looking back to March, I wanted to speak about two events which our community hosted.• First on March 15th we had Fr. Charles Joanides lead a marriage enrichment workshop. We had 28 of our
parishioners attend. Couples ranged from 1 yr to 45 yrs of marriage! It was a fun and a fulfilling Saturday afternoon. Fr. Jon wants to do something similar in the near future. We will try to increase our promotion if we do this again to help increase our reach.
• By the time you will have received this, we will have just wrapped up our March 25th Greek Independence Day celebration. I know that everyone who was there was moved by the children in their poems, songs and dancing. Also want to thank Dr. Kathleen Jewell Anagnost for being the keynote speaker. Additionally, I would like to thank the Hellenic culture and Hellenic School for organizing and guiding this event.
Looking forward I wanted to promote two things:• Lenten services continue. Please see Parish calendar on line or in our newsletter for the latest. A
reminder that Holy week is coming the week of April 13th. Resurrection services will be held Saturday night beginning 11:15pm. As we have done in the past several years, we will be holding Agape services and our parish picnic at Hugh McRae park on Sunday, April 20th. It is a cover dish style and the church will provide the lamb.
• Lastly, we are gearing up for our Festival May 16, 17 & 18. While is an incredible event, it does not happen without the help of 100’s of volunteers. If you are new to the community and haven’t helped before you will enjoy the experience. As we reach out to secure volunteers, please give us as much of your time as you can. The festival has a unbelievable outreach event into the greater Wilmington community.

Last month our General Meeting went very well. We had a lovely discussion about the activities in which we would participate and traditionally continue. This includes the Pascha Preparations which are well underway for our Community. Pascha lilies are now on sale. See a Philoptochos member to place your order. Also, please see any member to purchase Palm Sunday dinner tickets. The fish dinner cost is $12, the Senior dinner is $9, and the spaghetti dinner is only $5.

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.” Isaiah 40:31
Why on some days do I feel so strong in my faith and feel Jesus with me with every step I take and

with every encounter I have with a person, and other days I feel so impatient and blah? Usually I make the connection that on those ‘blah’ days, I am not starting my day with prayer and silence. I probably woke up a bit late and had just enough time to get dressed, make lunches, grab my keys and head to work. By afternoon, I am exhausted and then it is like ahhhhhhh…. I didn’t take the time to say thank you and ask for Him to be with me that day. It sure does make a difference! This is especially important to me during the Lenten season and will be my focus in my daily life and in Sunday School with my children. I want to feel like I am soaring on wings like eagles………..this lenten season is about renewing our strength and challenging ourselves to increase our prayer life, almsgiving and fasting.
Sunday School is going well and there is going to be a lot of Lenten activities going on in our classrooms! Be prepared to learn through your children!
We just had Oratorical Festival and WOW! They all
blew us away with their inspiring speeches. It was tough for our judges to decide. We had Sam Weirsteiner and Ron Demas from our parish and we had Tami Yates and Jennifer Reid from St. Basiles to help judge. In the Senior division, Peter Vogiatzis won first prize, Alex Miliotis won second prize and Koula Fragos won third prize. Eliana Fragos and Katerina Katsikas got honorable mention. In the Junior Division George Malahias won first, Nicholas Elfter second, and Demitri Brown won third place. Maia Porzio, Tommy Malahias and George Fragos received honorable mention.
We are so proud of all the children who spoke from their hearts and had the courage to stand in front of their congregation and speak. Our elementary participants were: Talia Porzio, Josh and Nicholas Zaharis and Eli and Georgia Theodoropoulos. They all inspired us so much! We are off to District Festival at St. Lukes parish in Morrisville, NC on April 5th. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel and speak there.
Thank you for bringing your children to church.

JOY/HOPEEleni Pappamihiel
JOY/HOPE had two exciting events over the past two months. In February, we were able to take advantage of one of the warm days and take an historical tour of downtown Wilmington that focused on the history of pirates and ghosts on our waterfront. This event was very well attended and the kids learned a lot about the history of the Port City. Did you know that Front St. used to be the high tide water mark in Wilmington? Do you know that when someone dies they hold a 'wake' and vigil at grave sites so that we don't accidentally bury someone alive? I even heard that Amalia Ponos caught something mysterious in one of her pictures!
We also had a successful event at the Dock Street Theater in March. Zach Hanner led our kids through several interactive role-play activities where they learned about conflict resolution, building healthy relationships with others, and other fun stuff! The kids had a great time, and I hear there may be some budding actors in our congregation.
In April, our JOY/HOPE event will be suspended so that the group can engage with Fr. Jon on Good Friday. In May, JOY/HOPE will be gearing up for the Greek Festival where we will run the Sno Cone/Lemonade booth. Parents, please let Eleni know if you can help out during the festival. We try to have at least 2 parents at the booth at all times. Eleni Pappamihiel will be stepping down in June as the JOY/HOPE advisor, and anyone who is interested in taking over the great ministry should contact Fr. Jon.
LOVEStella McTaggart

OCF (Orthodox Christian Fellowship)Campus Ministry
Alexandros Theodoropoulos
On February 22nd, 2014, our OCF group participated with a booth in the 2014 Annual UNCW Intercultural
Festival. During this great and important event, our group received a good amount of exposure while we had the opportunity to interact with a great number of students and visitors and inform/discuss with them about the Orthodox Christian Church and Faith. Many thanks to Nick Syrpis for manning our booth and assisting with the setup and clean up! Please see the photo.
In addition, our group’s next major event will be the screening of the award-winning movie “The Island” at the UNCW Lumina Theater on Sunday, April 6th, 2014. The event will take place from 7pm - 10pm so please mark your calendars. We will be featuring giveaways and a panel with Fr. Jon and Fr. Timothy and/or Fr. Peter from St. Basil and maybe another guest speaker that will discuss aspects of the traditional Orthodox Christian faith that pertain to the film. Furthermore, there will also be a sealed box where passerbys can anonymously fill out scraps of paper with things that they would like to be absolved of and deposit them in that box. At a later date, a ceremonial Orthodox Christian prayer will be offered over them and they well be burned with other religious artifacts following Easter. Please see the pertinent flyer presented on another page of this newsletter.
On another note, the group is currently looking into meeting at 8:30 pm every other Thursday night at our church. The finalized meeting date information will be posted through our other means of communications. Also, the group has informal Open Forum lunch meetings with Fr. Jon and Fr. Timothy (from St. Basil) at the Varsity Cafe in the UNCW Fisher Student Center starting at 11:00 am (please note the change in the time) every Monday. All are welcome to join. In case you know of any students that would be interested, please encourage them to attend.
We would further like to identify potential host families for our OCF students. The pertinent

Greek Festival2014 Festival Committee
How can I get involved with the 2014 Greek Festival?
There are so many ways to get involved with our 22nd Annual Greek Festival. This has become the largest ethnic festival in the New Hanover County Area and it can only happen with the collective help from everyone. We will have volunteer sign up sheets available and/ or you can attend meetings to see how your help is needed. You can help in so many different ways…the important thing is to JUST get involved. It’s a family affair and everyone in your family can help and do something. If you cook or can help with the kitchen prep work, you can help with everything that is needed to prepare to feed over 10,000 guests during the 3 day weekend of May 16, 17 and 18. Help is not just needed the weekend of the festival, but now, during the planning stages. If you can bake, we would love for you to help
prepare the pastries.Don’t like the heat or the noise outside, you can help make salads or cup pastries, help with church tours, help in the bookstore, or help with cooking demonstations.
Help promote the event to everyone you know; share our Facebook page to your social media channels. Help sell ads in our program book…ask your hair stylist, your banker, your local baker, your favorite restaurant, auto mechanic, physician…they range from as low as $100 up to $1500 and at least half of their money will go back to them with meal tickets, pastry tickets and admission tickets. Please consider sponsoring the ad book yourself. See attached order form. Remember this year’s deadline for the ad book is April 7.
