Have Voice, Will Travel The Auction Divas, Raising Millions of Dollars for Charity Nationwide

The Auction Divas (The Divas) vision and phi-losophy is simple: To help nonprofits, schools and churches nationwide, achieve exceptional

fundraising success through live auction. The Diva Team works tirelessly to improve the way Benefit Auctions are conducted and have developed a comprehensive suite of services including auction-eer innovation, client advocacy, event promotion, audience engagement and advanced preparation, all designed to help organizations exceed their fun-draising goals at Live Auction.

Sales, marketing and public relations is where The Auction Divas founder Shelly St. John, has spent the majority of her career, 18 of those years in her own marketing firm Primary Objective, LLC. In 2006, Shelly was exploring new business concepts for the next phase of her life, and through the in-spiration of her marketing clients, landed on Real Estate Auction. She passed her real estate exam, became trained as an auctioneer, and set out on a new path. In 2007 she was asked to perform at a few benefit auctions, and was totally caught by the benefit auction bug. By early 2008 The Auction Divas, LLC was formed, and is now the focus of all of her attention. “I feel so blessed to help so many people and animals through what we do at live fun-draising auctions. It is also an extreme pleasure to help aspiring young women find their passion in a traditionally male dominated industry”, says Shelly.

Having conducted hundreds of auctions, The Auc-tion Divas have encountered just about everything when it comes to Live Benefit Auctions. Both vic-tories and blunders (more VICTORIES than blun-ders, thank goodness), have allowed The Divas to earn “expert” status. This knowledge enables a deeper level of consulting across the entire event from check in/checkout, online and silent auction strategies to the gala event agenda which is all in addition to their core Live Auction services. The Divas believe that a solid planning and fundraising foundation is the key to exceeding expectations at Live Auction.

Partners in Philanthropy

The Divas consider their client’s partners in philan-thropy and become part of their extended staff by working side by side with them and event vendors at committee meetings, on conference calls, at event site walkthroughs or in any other way you need them. Sharing best practices in live auction item develop-ment, tactics of how to get more participation out of every guest, not just the top 5%, all while introducing new selling strategies that yield higher item revenue results.

High Energy | High Entertainment | High Sales

The Divas auction night performance is a marriage of auctioneering skill, public speaking and stand-up comedy, fused into a high energy show that has raised millions of dollars. Helping small to large or-ganizations nationwide, they offer the same level of professionalism to every client. Ask most guests

that see this team perform live and they’ll tell you that The Divas are a breath of fresh air to their event. The Divas view their work as a professional perfor-mance, similar to an actor in a theater performance. And, that the preparation leading up to each event sets the stage for the most profitable live auction possible.

Adding Value

The Divas are bumping up on the glass ceiling by changing the way traditional benefit auctions have been planned and executed, to them, adding value to each event has never been more important. Be-cause nonprofits are competing with each other for every guest dollar the auction planning process and performance must be innovative, fun and compel-ling.

The Auction Divas Team

The Divas believe that it takes a team to make the most of out of every fundraising event, not just an auctioneer. Because of this they deploy Auction-eers, Associate Auctioneers and Divaettes on event night to meet the client’s fundraising goals. The Diva Team encourages guests that may not have been in-terested or aware of the items for sale and persuade them to bid on their favorite item during the live auc-tion. They’ve found that many guests never consid-er bidding on live auction items because they think that the selling price will be outside of their budget. The Diva team specializes in giving all guests the opportunity to bid.

Unique Selling Methods

“Every auctioneer can sell an item twice or three times. We have found that by implementing innova-tive selling strategies we can make a tremendous impact on guest participation and bottom line fun-draising results” said Shelly. The Auction Divas has taken items from selling at $600 the prior year to selling twice for $5,000 each, increasing revenues by 100% to 600%. “Who knew that a tailgate cook-ing class would produce such high fundraising re-sults”, said one of their auction client’s. They helped our group find an amazing private chef, a world class private home in Denver, and sold 22 spots to a Broncos Tail Gate Cooking Class for $500 each re-sulting in an additional $11,000 in auction revenue.”

A Benefit for your Benefit –

The Social Media Mavens

Event promotion can be a daunting task for planners striving for attendance goals. The Auction Divas provide the added benefit of social media promotion to all client events and average 26 posts per month

Doing Good, is Doing RIGHT

After having worked in the for profit world for many years, The Auction Divas decided to focus their at-tention on the nonprofit universe. While raising mon-ey for schools, kids with cancer, people in wheel chairs and homeless shelter pets, they realized that their work had just begun. Shelly developed two programs that she offers to schools, churches and non profits completely free of charge to aid them in fulfilling their mission.

The Gala Grant

The Auction Divas rolled out a yearly giving pro-gram called The Gala Grant. They identified a gap between need and resources for many nonprofits striving to achieve their fundraising goals. The Gala Grant concept evolved as a solution to fill this void in the nonprofit community. A combination of in-kind donations from leading providers of nonprof-

for each client. You can follow them on Twitter at @theauctiondivas or like them on Facebook at

it event services and funds raised on event night through ticket sales, sponsorship and online, silent and live auction items will yield the recipient be-tween $75,000 and $150,000. “The Gala Grant presenting partners decided that giving back to their community together was more powerful than giving individually. Together, we cre-ated this unique business collaboration to boost nonprofit opportunities in the Denver market (or any market that has the need) and have brought to-gether the perfect team to give a nonprofit the major pieces needed to host a successful Gala event to benefit their cause.” said St. John. For more information about the Gala Grant or how to launch a Gala Grant program in your community, go the www.facebook.com/galagrantdenver and connect.

Background on Shelly Shelly St. John is a Minnesota girl by birth and still lives the values that she learned while growing up in the Midwest. She can be reached at 303.596.4640, via email at

[email protected] or on her website at www.theauctiondivas.com.

Where are The Auction Divas Today?

While based out of Denver, The Divas are work-ing all over the country. “I really love the fact that we can work anywhere, in any City, quite frankly, any Country,” says Shelly. “I wake up every morn-ing feeling so blessed that I get to do this important work that helps change the lives of so many people. Today we are working on training new female auc-tioneers who want to become part of The Auction Divas Team across the country, and are looking for-ward to performing at benefit auctions in Colorado, Oregon, Texas, Minnesota and Florida over the next year.” Have Voice – Will Travel!
