Our Chamber members dominated the list of winners of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year Blue Ribbon Awards.The companies – CWS, Inc., Domaille Engineering, PedalPub, Powers Ventures, Preventice, Sontes, The Affiliated Group, and Xylo Technologies – claimed eight spots on the list of top 100 small businesses in the United States.
The awards program, sponsored by Sam’s Club®, honors companies that demonstrate excellent business practices in several areas including strategy, employee development, community involvement, and customer service. The award is designed to spotlight businesses with fewer than 250 employees and income of less than $25 million.
Rochester tied with Lubbock and Irving, Texas (cities double the population of Rochester) for
most businesses receiving this prestigious honor. “We’re grateful the U.S. Chamber recognizes free enterprise leaders. Small businesses make up a large percentage of our membership, and are a driving force for much of our community’s progress,” says Julie Fiesel, the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Government Affairs
The winners were selected from a record number of applicants across the nation. U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue said, “Our Blue Ribbon Award winners are the best of the best—growing and succeeding despite significant challenges.”
What does this honor mean for the award winners? First time Blue Ribbon Award winner, Mark Neeb, President/CEO of the Affiliated Group, says “Small businesses across the country employ the vast majority of people in the U.S., yet do their work in relative anonymity. It’s gratifying that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recognizes the value small businesses bring to our economy. We are thrilled to be part of the awards process but the greater good is the attention being brought to small business as a whole”.
Repeat winner, Alan DeKeyrel of CWS echoes the sentiment: “The U.S. Chamber and Small Business Summit represent some of the finest organizations in the United States. These companies are the backbone of our economy and to be recognized as a leader among them is truly a humbling experience.”
On a more personal level, “We are honored to be named to this list,” says first time winner, Joe Powers, President of Powers Ventures. “We share the award and want to thank our amazing employees and the greater Rochester community.”
“This provides us with yet another avenue to partner with other members to increase our networking, marketing, and educational opportunities,” says Preventice President/CEO Jon P. Otterstatter.
A First: Midwest Regional Finalist When regional finalists were announced on March 19, Dharani Ramamoorthy of Xylo Technologies was thrilled to learn his company was named the Midwest Regional Finalist, the first such honor won by a local business.
As the Midwest regional finalist, they stood out among companies from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. “Xylo Technologies is an example of the powerful contributions small businesses can make not only in their communities and their states, but also more broadly to the country’s economic recovery,” Donohue said. “The Chamber is happy to honor Xylo Technologies for the policies and achievements that have made it a leader among small businesses and a driver of job creation, economic growth, and opportunity.”
The U.S. Chamber will recognize Xylo Technologies, the six other regional finalists, and 100 Blue Ribbon Award winners at the 10th annual America’s Small Business Summit, taking place June 11-13 in Washington, D.C. During the Summit, one regional finalist will be named the DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year and receive a $10,000 cash prize.
Repeat winner, Sontes owner Tessa Leung, encourages Chamber members to consider attending. “The Summit is a great event that lets you see what is happening nationally and inspires us to keep looking into to the future and trying new ideas!”
Representatives of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce will be traveling with the winners to the Summit, an annual event open to all Chamber members.

Closely related, but with differentoutcomes, is Business Exit Planning. This is the process of defining strategies and a road map for the current owner(s) of a business to retire or significantly reduce his/her role – including
the possibility of a sale. Both types of planning lay the groundwork for a smooth transition while protecting the ongoing operations of the business.
This workshop is designed for functional leaders who will be involved/influential in determining the future of the business. In small group discussions and activities, participants will use proven tools to start developing theirown succession plan.

The ninth annual Minnesota Cup competition —the largest statewide new venture competition in the country — is now open for entries. Entering its tenth year,
Minnesota Cup has provided more than 8,000 of Minnesota’s top entrepreneurs with the resources and support needed to launch their breakthrough business ideas. Since 2009, over $70 million has been raised by Minnesota Cup finalists. Minnesota residents have until May 17 to submit entries on the Minnesota Cup website to compete for $200,000 in prize money.
The competition is free to enter and encourages entries from a wide range of businesses, entrepreneurs and inventors in six divisions —Energy/Clean Tech, General, High Tech, Life Science/ Health IT, Social Entrepreneur and Student. Entrepreneurs advancing in the competition will have the opportunity to advance business ideas, gain exposure, learn about resources available to entrepreneurs, be paired with mentors, meet members of the Cup’s review board — and win cash prizes if their idea is judged to be among the best entries.
Minnesota Cup Eligibility• Minnesota entrepreneurs, inventors and small business owners working on an innovative new business concept and generating less than $1 million per year in revenue are encouraged to enter.• The idea needs to be economically viable and it cannot violate or infringe on the copyright or intellectual property of another.• You can only enter one division. We understand that some entries will straddle the fence of multiple divisions. Enter the division that you feel best represents your entry.• Eligibility for the student award is limited to individuals enrolled as full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students attending a college or university in Minnesota and who are between the ages of 19 and 30 and have less than 5 years of work experience.

Keynote speaker Susan Park Rani, President of Rani Engineering and DMC Corporation board member, kicked off the day at a Luncheon at Rochester International Event Center. Participants then boarded buses to the State Capitol in St. Paul. After a rally in the Rotunda, attendees had the opportunity to tour the Capitol and attend education sessions. YAGGY COLBY ASSOCIATES (YCA) received a 2013 Engineering Excellence Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC/MN). This honor was awarded for 2nd Street SW Reconstruction – Phase 2 in Rochester. The project transformed the corridor by incorporating low impact development storm water measures, providing an improved pedestrian and transit experience, and enhancing the streetscape. YCA provided design, engineering, project management, and construction services.
KTTC owner Quincy (IL) Newspapers, Inc., has announced the purchase of four television stations located in Peoria/Bloomington, IL; Ft. Wayne, IN; Duluth, MN/Superior, WI and Binghamton, NY.Quincy will now own or operate 23 stations in 14 television markets, along with two radio stations and two newspapers. KTTC also operates KXLT, owned by SagamoreHill Broadcasting under a shared services agreement. The acquisition is subject to federal regulatory approval.
EXACTLY DONE is proud to announce the addition of Crystal Huber to their team. As she currently focuses on sales, she will also be training to become the second Google Trusted Photographer for Exactly Done. Crystal brings over 8 years of customer service experience to her role.
THINK MUTUAL BANK named Nathan Boyer Manager of Finance. In this role, Boyer will oversee the bank’s investment portfolio, asset liability management function, and financial analysis. Boyer has been with Think since 2008 and most recently was the bank’s Fixed Income Analyst. He earned his CFA charter in 2012.
BOLDT CONSTRUCTION promoted Steve Schultz to Vice President and General Manager of the Rochester Operations. Steve has led the Rochester office since it opened in 2008 and has been working for Boldt in various leadership roles on a number of projects in the region since 1992. Additionally, Boldt announces the addition of Derek Gifford to the Rochester office staff as a project engineer/estimator.
CUSTOM COMMUNICATIONS/CUSTOM ALARM named Melissa L. Brinkman Chief Executive Officer. Melissa has worked at Custom Alarm for over 15 years, most recently as Chief Operating Officer. Former CEO Leigh Johnson will remain involved as the company’s Chair of the Board. The business commercial sound side will spin off this summer and become its own independent company. Nikki Johnson, current Custom Alarm Vice President and Director of Marketing, will head up the new company, “Sound and Media Solutions”.WEST BANK was recognized as one of the top 30 community banks in America by Raymond James, a national investment banking firm. The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce recently passed the 1,400 member mark. When Aynsley Jones signed up The Doggery, he made history by becoming the chamber’s 1,400th member. We’ve added even more since then. That number comfortably places our chamber as the largest in Minnesota. The Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, which includes the Bloomington and Northeast Minneapolis chambers, has a combined membership of about 1,000. The
Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce has 1,050 members.
