Expanded Roles

• Non-typical roles=Expanded roles

• Some may a.k.a. “role creep”

– If duties and acts are concurrent with another scope

of practice, opposition may be observed

• SoP laws may allow or prohibit its application in

certain settings by certain providers

• Most desirable to identify commonly used

expanded roles

– Does this make the role a non-non-typical role??

Expanded Scopes

• Floor vs. ceiling debate is common

• Skills/procedures/medications that would be disallowed without additional:

• Training/education

• Testing/certification

• Licensure

• Credentialing

• Some jurisdictions are very conservative while some are rather liberal

• Require a significant investment in the post-employment phase

• Are frequently practiced less than within scope
