Experiencing Divine Mercy Dear Brothers and Sisters, In some movies and TV shows of today, there is still a fascination not only with the Catholic priest but also with the sacrament of confession. Sometimes the plot of a show will depend on something said in confession, for example, in Clint Eastwood’s 2008 film Gran Torino or in the 2014 Irish film Calvary (n.b., neither of which are family movies). A cop show I like watch-ing, Blue Bloods (set in New York City), is a little lighter in its portrayal of confession. The po-lice commissioner (played by Tom Selleck) goes to confession frequently to his priest and friend. There is also Father Brown (BBC, also on Netflix). I enjoy watching how actors play the part of confessor, but even more I find it interesting how some of today’s entertainment is capti-vated by the Catholic practice of confessing one’s sins. The Second Sunday of Easter was nicknamed “Divine Mercy Sunday” by Pope St. John Paul II. In the holy gospel (Jn 20:19-31), we see the resurrected Christ revealing Himself to the apostles. He sends them out, but before doing so, He breathes on them. This is no acci-dent. The last time that God breathed on man was at creation (Gn 2:7). Therefore, with this gesture, Jesus is communicating the awesome power of creation — of re-creation — to the apostles. But for what purpose? Jesus says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (Jn 20:22-23). This is shocking! Je-sus is giving the authority to forgive sins — the authority that was previously only God’s authori-ty — to mere men! And why? So that these authorized men can work to reconcile sinners to God (2 Cor 5:18) through the confession of their sins (Jas 5:16), sharing the mercy of Jesus with those who need it most. This power to forgive sins on behalf of Christ and His Church has been passed on to the successors to the apostles, that is, to bishops, and to their collaborators, that is, to priests. It might seem odd that during the joyful season in which the Church is emphasizing the sac-rament of baptism that the Church also would be promoting the sacrament of confession. This is because baptism does not abolish human weakness nor the inclination to sin (that is, concupiscence), but it begins a life of conversion to Christ. He instituted this sacrament as a remedy for post-baptismal sin — and not only for Christians to avail themselves of during the seasons of Lent and Advent — but for all times of the year. Devotional confession, which is strongly encouraged by the Church (CCC 1458), which I preach and practice as a priest, is vital for one who is serious about overcoming vices and growing closer to Christ. It helps one grow in humility, it offers him or her certainty of forgiveness, spiritual direction, and helps a person overcome self-deception and rationalization in matters of sin. As those who struggle so much with the fallen human condition, Divine Mercy Sunday is a good opportunity to give thanks to our Risen Lord for the gift of confession.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
En algunas películas y programas de televisión de hoy en día, todavía hay una fascinación no solo con el sacerdote Católico sino también con el sacramento de la confesión. Algunas veces el tra-ma de un espectáculo depende de algo que se haya dicho en confesión, por ejemplo, en la película de 2008 de Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino, o en la película Irlandesa de 2014, Calvary (ninguna de las cuales son películas familiares). Un show policiaco que me gustaba ver, Blue Bloods (filmada en Nueva York), es un poco más ligera en su descripción sobre la confesión. El comisionado de policía (interpretado por Tom Selleck) suele confesarse frecuentemente con su sacerdote y amigo. También está el Padre Brown (BBC, también en Netflix). El Segundo Domingo de Pascua fue nombrado "Domingo de la Divina Misericordia" por el Papa San Juan Pablo II. En el santo evangelio (Jn 20: 19-31), vemos a Cristo resucitado revelándose a los apóstoles. Él los envía, pero antes de hacerlo, El soplo sobre ellos. Esto no es un accidente. La última vez que Dios sopló sobre el hombre fue en la creación (Gn 2: 7). Por lo tanto, con este gesto, Jesús está comunicando el asombroso poder de la creación - de la recreación - a los apóstoles. Pe-ro, ¿con qué propósito? Jesús dice, "Reciban el Espíritu Santo. A quienes ustedes perdonen los pe-cados, se les quedaran perdonados; y a quienes no se les perdonen, les quedaran sin perdonar"(Jn 20: 22-23). ¡Esto es impactante! ¡Jesús está dando la autoridad para perdonar los pecados - a los hombres simples la autoridad que anteriormente era solo la autoridad de Dios—! ¿Y por qué? Para que estos hombres autorizados puedan trabajar para reconciliar a los pecadores con Dios (2 Cor 5, 18) mediante la confesión de sus pecados (Santiago 5:16), compartiendo la misericordia de Jesús con aquellos que más lo necesitan. Este poder para perdonar los pecados en nombre de Cristo y su Iglesia ha sido transmitida a los sucesores de los apóstoles, es decir, a los obispos, y a sus colabo-radores, es decir, a los sacerdotes.
Puede parecer extraño que durante el tiempo alegre en que la Iglesia se enfatiza en el sacramen-to del bautismo, la Iglesia también promueva el sacramento de la confesión. Esto se debe a que el bautismo no elimina la debilidad humana ni la inclinación al pecado (es decir, la concupiscencia), pero es el comienzo a una vida de conversión a Cristo.
