Ididn’tattendthewomen’smarchonthedayafterinauguration,butIdidattendaprotestattheinaugurationitself.Ijoinedagroupthatwasof5iciallypermittedtodemonstratenon-violentresistanceontheparaderouteacrossfromtheNationalArchives.Thisfeltrisky.AndIfeltcalledtobethere….Theweekbeforetheinauguration,onMartinLutherKingJr.’sbirthday,IhadparticipatedinaUULMpaneldiscussionaboutcriminaljusticeandpretrialreleasereform.MygoalwastoofferthetheologicalunderpinningsforwhyandhowweshouldbeinvolvedinthisproblemasUnitarianUniversalists.IhadspokenaboutthesixthUUprinciple:thegoalofworldcommunitywithpeace,libertyandjusticeforall,whichcallsustostretchbeyondoureverydayroutinesanddesires;tomakecommoncausewiththepeoplewhoselivesarebeinginvadedinreal,physicalwayseverydaybyinjustice.Later,theonlynon-UUpanelistinvitedallofustojoinhimattheprotestontheparaderoute.IrealizedifIdidnotseriouslyconsiderthisinvitation,Iwouldnotbelivinguptomyownwords.Assometraditionsmightsay,Iwasconvictedbymyowntestimony.Itookthisrisk,andmadethesacri5iceofspendingmydayoffinthisway:Igotdowntothesecuritycheckpointby5:45AM,neartheMallinWashington,DCincold,dampweather.OurgroupwassurroundedbyTrumpsupporters,theNationalGuard,andSecretService.Wenumberedafewthousandprotestors,ranginginagefromyoungadultstoWorldWarIIveterans-largelypeopleofcolorfromalldifferentbackgrounds.Weactuallylookedliketheworldcommunity,expressingourresistancetothedirectthreatswefacefromthenewadministration.At5irstwefeltonedge,ourantennaeupforanydisruption.Wedidn’tknowwhowecouldtrust.Yetasthedaywenton,ourmoodlightened.Wewerebreathingmoredeeply;feeelingstrongerandmorerelaxed.Weheardreportsofthousandsmoreprotestersoutsidethesecuritycheckpoints,notbeingallowedin,makingusfeelwerepresentedfarmorepeoplethanjustourselves.Inyogaclass,everytimewemakeamove,theteacherremindsus:“Seehowthisfeels.Gototheedgeofwhereyoufeelcomfortable,butdon’tgotothepointofpain.”Itisnotalwayseasyto5indthatspot.Ifwegotoofarandgethurt,thatcausesasetback.Butifwedon’ttrytoreachtheedgeofourcomfortzone,wemissthepointofdoingthepractice.Whenwelearnto5indandstayatourouteredge,thespotthatrequiresrealeffortwithoutcausingdamage,ourpractice
develops.Inthatprotestactiononinaugurationday,justasinagoodyogaclass,Ifeltphysicallytiredbutspirituallyrechargedattheend.Icontributedtoanimportantwitnessandreaf5irmedmycommitmentstopeace,justiceandliberty.Now,itistimetocontemplateanotherstepinthatdirection.Iurgeyoutothinkoveryourownlifeandroutine,andseewhereyourconvictionsarecallingyoutomakeastretch,totrysomethingnewordifferent,andsobecomeamorepowerfulagentoftheBelovedCommunitythatourcongregationstrivestoputinpractice.

TheLightHousefor,intheirwords,fundstohelprebuildliveswithcompassionandhelppeopletransitiontohousing,employment,andself-suf5iciency;
NewPathwaystoEnterprisefordevelopingself-governancethroughlocallivelihoodassociations,aprogramforwomeninthePhilippinestobuildandsuccessfullymanagetheirownbusinesses,i.e.thedesign,creationandsaleofbeautifulbeadedbagsandscarves.
MeadvilleScholarshipforMasterofArtsinReligionforArmanPedrowhoiscurrentlyinvolvedwiththesuccessfulleadershipoftheUUChurchofthePhilippinesasaresultofUUCAfunding.
CreatingCommunitiesTutoringandArtsClubtohelpfundmentorfees,literacymaterialsandartsuppliesforaprogramforelementaryschoolchildrenfrompublicandsubsidizedhousingcommunitiesinAnnapolis.
WeCareandFriendsSchoolontheWater,asummerprogramforvulnerablechildrentoengageinoutdooractivitiesaswellasothereducationalopportunitiesincludingvisitinglocalmuseums(toincludeBannekerDouglasMuseum,MarylandScienceCenter,Smithsonian).

TheBuildingBelovedCommunity(BBC)teamhascontinuedtoexplorehowraceandprejudicearesopervasiveinourthinkingandlives.OurlastMiddleHoursessionwasheldonMarch5,andatthattimewediscussedmoreaboutourperceptionssurroundingrace.Oneexerciseinvolvedpredictingthepercentofrecipientsreceivingfoodstampsbyrace.Whatmessageshaveyoulearnedwhilegrowingupandasanadultfromsocialmediaandtalkshows?Marylanddata,whichisquitesimilartocountry-widedata,showsthataclearmajority-57%-arewhite;36%areblack;4%Hispanic;and0.2%Asian.Howmanyassumedthemajorityofrecipientswouldbenon-white?
