April 22, 29, May 6 and 13- “Being in the Body…. Wisely”

Art Kent, Fascial Alignment Specialist and Yoga Teacher Claudia Cardin-Kleffner, Yoga Therapist and retired Occupational Therapist

Our bodies do amazing things without any help or awareness from us. Think about it, we eat and drink and our bodies break down and assimilate the nutrients. We don’t need to be a nutritionist for the process to occur. The same thing happens in the lungs. We breathe and our bodies extract oxygen from the air so the cells in our bodies can use it in cellular respiration, the making of energy. No advanced degree required. There’s example after example of our bodies’ inner intelligence working, operating without a single need of our conscious awareness. That’s the inside, the parts we don’t see. The outside is a different story. And our bodies do tell stories. There’s that story of the reoccurring knee pain that can be traced back to the skiing accident in your early 20’s. Or the neck and shoulder story about pain from the car accident 17 years ago. The physical therapy treatments helped us to get over the initial pain and restore movement, but the reoccurring issues seem to persist. That’s our back stories. They show up in our posture, our gate (the way we walk), they show up in how we modify our daily activities, such as reaching to get a box off the top shelf, or bending over to pick up a sock or other item. Sometimes these stories include pain. When pain is involved, daily activities are modified, daily activities are limited. These are the times that our bodies make us aware of our stories. We are aware of the pain and the limitations, but we are not always aware of the changes we have made to cope with the “new normal”. Often, these limitations will be brushed off with a shrug and perhaps a comment such as “I’m just getting older.” Pain occurs in the body to let us know something is wrong and needs our attention. Our altered posture, breath and limitations are all indications that we are out of balance. What would happen if we were to give attention to our bodies before pain forced the issue? Being aware of how we stand, sit, reach, and breathe give insight to subtle changes we can make to begin to bring our bodies back in to balance. We can’t rewrite the stories but we can write the endings. This 4-week class will be taught by Art Kent, a Fascial Alignment Specialist and Yoga Teacher, and Claudia Kleffner, a Yoga Therapist and retired Occupational Therapist. Major topics taught and reinforced in the class are:

1. Function and posture 2. Balance 3. Strength of the Core and the body 4. Breathing for the Nervous system and for life

Classes will include lecture/discussion and easy practices including breathwork and movement designed to increase awareness of the limiting patterns so you can start to create purposeful changes in your daily habits of living. It will also include weekly take home movements/ practices designed to reinforce the teachings.

Dates: Saturday, April 22, 29, May 6 and 13 Time: 9:00- 10:30 a.m.

Fee: $90.00 Place: Sastun Center Classroom

“Gluten protein is found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and oats. It is hidden in pizza, pasta, bread, wraps, rolls, and most packaged foods. Clearly, gluten is a staple of the American diet.” “There’s a spectrum of reactions to gluten – ranging from mild but still symptomatic to full-blown celiac disease…So even if you don’t feel any physical discomfort from eating gluten, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can eat it freely.” ~ Dr. Hyman Medical Director, Center for Functional Medicine
