Our career-focused courses are designed to help you develop the skills and confidence to succeed in your chosen career. You will be taught by tutors that have experience and skills from industry and you’ll learn in high-quality, purpose-built facilities that simulate a real working environment.

Our students have lots of contact with the ‘real world’ of employers and business through work experience, talks, visits or real-life projects. Students may undertake activities that develop skills of enterprise and entrepreneurship and take part in competitions.

Vocational courses at Level 3 are equivalent to A-Levels which means you can progress on to university after completion. They are mostly assessed by project work over the course of the year and can involve some exams and tests depending on the qualification.

Vocational courses have a number of different names such as BTECs, NVQs (National Vocational Qualifcations) and VRQs (Vocationally Related Qualifcations) and are available at different educational levels, so it is appropriate for students as they develop their skills and abilities.

Vocational courses at Entry, Level 1 and Level 2 help students develop their skills and move towards work or higher-level courses.

On all courses, our course and progression tutors help students by closely monitoring their targets, progress and achievements to ensure success. A very high attendance is essential, expected and monitored closely at all times.

Course Levels Explained

Level 4+ Higher Education

Level Qualification Equivalent to What’s next?

Changes to GCSE GradesNew GCSE grades were introduced for 2017 exam results on subjects which followed the new teaching specifications from 2015. By 2019, all GCSEs will be graded using the new system.

What are the new grades? The new GCSEs will be graded 9-1 rather than A*-G, with grade 5 being considered a good pass and grade 9 being the highest and set above the current A*.

The government’s definition of a ‘good pass’ will be set at grade 5 for reformed GCSEs. A grade 4 will continue to be a Level 2 achievement. The Department for Education does not expect employers, colleges or universities to raise the bar to a grade 5 if a grade 4 would meet their requirements.

For further facts and a timetable of when the different subjects will change to the new GCSE grading structure, visit:www.gov.uk

How will it affect my place at College? All of the courses within this guide include entry requirements. Where we ask for a GCSE Grade C, you will need to have a grade 4.

Here are some other examples from our course entry requirements:

• Four GCSEs grades A-D = Four GCSEs grades 9-3

• Five GCSEs grades A-C = Five GCSEs grades 9-4

There are a number of options for young people to further their studies and making the right choice of organisation for study is critical. Whether it is to stay on at school, go to vocational college or Sixth Form College full-time or to get an Apprenticeship and learn while earning.

Getting a good start on the right course is essential so it is important that you look at all of the options available and consider the following:• 16-18s have to stay in education, but not

necessarily at schoolYoung people can study in full-time education, start an Apprenticeship or they can study part-time if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time.

In order to help your son or daughter make the right decision, take these next steps:• Take your son or daughter to open

events at several institutions• Take any opportunity for taster

sessions and experiencing your subject of interest

• Look online for advice and information

Before he started his Apprenticeship, Matt struggled to communicate well with others and lacked confidence.

“Matt came to us not knowing anything about the industry and it’s been a massive learning curve for him. He’s matured tenfold and we’re really pleased with his progress,” said Matt’s manager Angela.

“Doing this Apprenticeship has been one of the best things I’ve ever done, and there are things I’ve learned at College that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else,” Matt said.

Engineering Engineering | Eng

ineering

Our Engineering courses and Apprenticeships are delivered in our Engineering Centre of Excellence, and offer the opportunity to specialise in a number of pathways including general engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and more.

Our Level 2 courses offer General Engineering (a mixture of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering) and Welding and Fabrication pathways, which offer practical skills development in each area supported by technical knowledge, problem solving skills, English and maths.

Our Level 3 Diploma in Engineering programmes develop a wide range of engineering knowledge whilst stretching your understanding of science, English and maths. Problem solving and developing research skills form a large part of this level.

We also offer progression on to HNCs and HNDs in Engineering.

Ellie Chandler developed an interest in Engineering at a young age, growing up listening to her grandad’s stories of a career working on towering electricity pylons.

“I’ve always had the frame of mind that I could be an engineer,” Ellie said. “I’ve always been very driven and determined that I want a career, not just a job.”

Ellie gained an Apprenticeship at HMP Moorland, becoming the first woman in her department.

Looking forward to the future, Ellie is discussing her options with her College careers advisors and hopes to become a fully qualified Electrical Engineer.

The vibrant learning atmosphere encouraged Aleks to pursue her ambitions and become a teacher and she is now a full-time member of teaching staff at the College.

“When I came to this College I was working as a cleaner and in a restaurant peeling vegetables to earn extra money. It taught me that if you worked hard and believed in yourself you could be successful,” Aleks said.
