Applied Technology 2014

Instructional DeliveryThe School of Applied Technology and Professional Development specializes in open-entry, open-exit instructional delivery. This means students may enroll weekly depending on the school calendar and available seats, and are able to complete courses when proficiency has been demonstrated and evaluated by instructors.

Courses are delivered in two formats: self-directed and instructor-led. The majority of courses are delivered in the self-directed format. This allows new students to join an on-going class or program any time, and allows students to complete course work as quickly as they are able to demonstrate competency. Grades issued are MC (Master Competency), when a student passes a course, or NM (Not Mastered). A qualified instructor is always present to guide, coach, mentor, and evaluate progress as students work through their prescribed instructional activities.

Instructor-led courses have a scheduled start and end time in which students are members of a cohort and work on instructional modules as directed by the instructor.

Standalone CoursesMost courses offered through Applied Technology may be taken standalone, however some prerequisites may apply. The tuition for most standalone courses is based on $2.10 times the course’s total clock hours. Students may receive a Recognition of Achievement from their instructor for completing a standalone course (as determined by the department.)

Basic Skills AssessmentThe Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and other standardized tests will be used to ensure adults have acquired the basic skills necessary to succeed in the training program in which they wish to enroll. High school students will work with their school counselor to ensure they have the appropriate skill levels needed to successfully complete the program of their choice.

High School StudentsPrior to admission, all high school students must complete the high school pre-registration form and obtain signatures from their coun-selor and parent/guardian. On this form, the student will indicate if they are seeking high school credit.

High school students do not pay tuition but are responsible for an application fee, lab fees, classroom fees, and purchasing books and supplies, as needed.

A select number of Applied Technology programs prepare students for occupational industries and clinical externships that require stu-dents to be at least 18 years old before placement or hire.

Manual Machinist

Welding

This program prepares students for skilled positions as an entry-level manual machinist. Manual machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Through hands-on projects and computer-assisted instruction, students learn the basic skills needed to fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical and/or precision instruments. This occupation may also require eligible candidates to fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines.

Students enrolled in this program are provided opportunities to learn entry-level-job skills in welding processes most commonly used in today’s industries. Instruction and practice is provided for oxy-acetylene, shielded-metal-arc, gas-metal-arc, flux-cored-arc and gas-tungsten-arc welding. Instruction also covers theory and applications of processes, encompassing both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Safe practices are emphasized throughout the program. Additional instruction is provided in mathematics for welding and blueprint reading. Students will also have the opportunity to learn techniques for welder performance qualifications and certification testing. Thermal cutting and gouging techniques using oxy-fuel, plasma-arc and arc-air processes are also covered.
