OVERVIEW
The members of the Applied Power Electronics Technology
Research Group (APET) have been working for the last years
mainly on the following research areas: Power Electronics,
Renewable Energy, Power Quality, Electrical Drives and
Lighting.
AIMS
APET aims to educate, conduct research and disseminate
knowledge within the overall fields of industrial electronics
and electrical energy technologies, with a view toward solving
socially relevant problems within those technologies.
RESEARCH
The research work comprises theoretical investigations such as
analysis, modeling, simulation as well as experimental work as
sample manufacturing, analyzing of power and control
hardware. The traditional research areas of the group are the
following.
• Power Converter Topologies and Control.
• Power Electronics for Electrical Systems in
Transportation.
• Fulfillment of Grid Code Requirements.
• Transmission, Distribution and Micro-Grid Power
Electronics.
• Power Electronics for Power Quality Improvements.
• Power Electronics for Integration of Renewable
Energy Systems.
EDUCATION. PhD Theses/ Master’s Theses.
One of the main tasks of APET members is the supervision of
Doctoral Dissertations and Master’s Theses. In some cases,
Master's Theses are designed in APET as a practice for the PhD
thesis. PhD-level research is too hard to embark on without
preparation. The essential requirement of a Master's thesis is
that it literally demonstrates mastery: students have fully
understood the state of the art in their subfield and they are
capable of operating at that level. Experimental work plays a
key role in the PhD and Master’s theses. A well-equipped
laboratory is available, offering the student excellent
opportunities for constructing and testing prototypes of
electronic systems and electric machines. Facilities for testing
power electronic converters are also at students’ disposal.
TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY & TRAINING
Besides public funding research projects, one focus of APET is
research and development activities in close cooperation with
national and international companies within the already
mentioned application areas. Several projects have been
developed in close cooperation with companies from different
sectors.
• Mining.
• Metal Industry (making or treating of metals).
• Renewable Energy.
• Ship Building (ship propulsion).
• Welding Equipment Manufacturing.
• Lighting.
• Water Analysis.
In addition, APET offers professional training courses adapted
to meet the needs of our costumers and to increase their
return of investment, to reduce down time and to improve the
skills and motivation of their personnel.
ENGINEERING SERVICES
Finally, APET offers engineering services (e.g., measurement,
characterization, engineering opinion and consulting) for
companies in nearly all fields of activity.
