Welcome Dear StudentsDevizes Sixth Form is a dynamic and positive learning environment where we treat students as young adults. In addition to our own Y11 students from Devizes School, our extensive choice of courses and caring ethos attracts students from a wide range of other schools in the area.

Our examination results are consistently excellent. For the last three years students have exceeded their challenging targets and have achieved positive value-added scores. Our results at A Level have consistently put us amongst the top few sixth forms in the region. Our very positive Ofsted report in February 2012 recognised this and graded every aspect of our work as ‘Good’ and the report contains many references to our outstanding practice.

We are a learning community; we enjoy learning together. Our teachers work in partnership with students to produce stimulating lessons and learning experiences that are designed to make learning accessible through a variety of styles. Our outstanding teachers respond to students’ needs and welcome and encourage student input on how to improve.

Expectations are very high at Devizes School and this is reflected in our students’ attitudes to their learning in preparation for their future. Every young person is valued, encouraged and supported to make the most of their potential. Students aspiring to Higher Education are given expert, personalised advice and support and a mentoring scheme from the local business community supports all students in realising their wider skills in their working lives. In addition to developing learning and achievement, we encourage all students to make a unique contribution to the life of the Sixth Form and make good and long-standing friendships. We are proud of the progress that all our students make; from the highest academic achievers gaining places at top universities, to students who achieve outstanding outcomes and develop skills to move directly into jobs and careers locally.

Our Sixth Form centre provides first rate, state-of-the-art study facilities and exciting relaxation areas for our Sixth Form students. These excellent facilities will help to prepare our students for the next stage of their education either at university or in the world of work.

If you want to be part of a Sixth Form which will provide you with further education of the highest calibre, challenge you to develop your talents and prepare you for higher education, we welcome your application. We then look forward to sharing this next, most important stage of your education with you.

First of all, thank you for your interest in our Sixth Form. Our overriding aim in Devizes Sixth Form is to maximise your academic achievement. This will enable you to access Higher Education, Further Education, or to gain employment with better prospects than would otherwise be the case. However there is obviously more to gain from two years with us than simply further academic qualifications. Part of being a Sixth Form student is the transition into adulthood, since you are most likely to reach 18 whilst with us. The staff/student relationship is therefore different in the Sixth Form. You wish to have more independence, more personal responsibility and be treated as a young adult. We offer that, indeed we expect that of you. Sixth Form is yet another stepping stone along your life path, and it is therefore important that this two way relationship works effectively. You will see and hear the phrase “right time, right place” many times whilst you are part of Devizes Sixth Form. Simple, clear and concise, it summarises your responsibility for your own progress and our expectation of you as a Sixth Form student.

A relatively small Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on the quality of individual Information and Guidance (IAG) we provide you with as preparation for your next step, whatever that may be. For something like three quarters of our most recent Year 13 cohort it was Higher Education. If you are not going on to Higher Education we have a Business Mentoring Programme, which links individual students to local businesses, to help develop your understanding of employment and indeed your employability.

Absolutely critical to your success is the quality of your start in September of Year 12 and the appropriate use of your study lessons is a major part of this transition. We have support systems in place to help you with the transition from GCSE study but, as the comment from a previous student on the final page of this prospectus makes clear, you also need to make a positive investment right from the start.

This prospectus gives you a feel for some of the things we do in Devizes Sixth Form. We have a wide range of subjects in the offer, academic and applied. Both achieve excellent results and allow us to help you tailor a learning programme which suits your needs and learning style, supporting positive outcomes. There are significant changes in the pipeline for A Levels and some of the subject pages in this prospectus reflect the change to a linear course assessment.

Our aim is to make Devizes Sixth Form a rewarding experience for all, where students achieve academically, learn life skills and make the transition to become young adults. I invite you to come and be a part of our success.

Glyn Evans Mrs Nichola Corry Head of Sixth Form Assistant Head of Sixth Form

House CaptainsThere is an opportunity in March of Year 12 to apply for the position of House Captain. Four students are selected to represent the Sixth Form and the School, one per House. Their responsibilities include being a role model for younger students in their House, leading House and Tutor events, representing the School at various

events, giving presentations to prospective Sixth Formers and attending lower school assemblies to inform them of Sixth Form events. Their tenure is from March of Year 12 to March of Year 13. This is a post of significant responsibility with a substantial commitment of personal time, but is certainly something for all students to aspire to.

Reasons to choose

Devizes Sixth Form

≫ Outstanding exam results, placing us in the top 25% of similar schools in the country.

≫ An excellent record of placing students in Higher Education including Oxbridge and other Russell Group institutions.

≫ A high level of individual pastoral support and guidance from a team of experienced Sixth Form leaders and mentors as well as your tutor, with whom you will have daily contact.

≫ Much greater independence in the Sixth Form. You take responsibility for independent learning in your non-teaching lessons throughout the week. Sixth Form facilities & support are, of course, provided to help you to do this.

≫ Independent study facilities with Internet access & the option to use your own laptop/iPad/smart phone to log on to the VLE.

≫ An active and successful history of Sixth Form sport including access, at reduced cost to Devizes Sports Centre, adjacent to the School and a dedicated Sport/Enrichment afternoon for all Sixth Form.

≫ A friendly, welcoming and socially active Sixth Form, including the Sixth Form parties and of course the Prom.

Our Sixth Form Centre has one floor of dedicated study with abundant IT facilities. Above that is a more informal floor, also with IT provision, a kitchen bar & vending area.

Sixth Form AmbassadorsThe Ambassadors are Year 12 students who put themselves forward and are then interviewed for the role. The Ambassadors organise social events, fundraising activities and liaise with staff regarding improvements to the Sixth Form. Sixth Form Ambassadors also provide student voice whilst representing the school on Open Days and Option Evenings.

The biggest event is the Sixth Form Prom held at the end of term five each year. This is a formal occasion; it is THE social event of the year, for staff and students alike! Each year all Sixth Form students contribute £4 as a subscription fee. Those monies are then used by the Committee to fund their activities and, at the end of the year, subsidise the Prom with any surplus.

Charity WorkThe Ambassadors are also in charge of running most of the Charity work in the Sixth Form. Over the years it has successfully run a number of whole school events to raise funds for charity. These include a Miss World (with a twist!) Talent Show, Pamper Evening, Fancy Dress days and much, much more. Some of the charities we have raised money for include; Cancer Research, Homestart, Red Nose Day and Children in Need. The Ambassadors will ensure their fundraising covers all charities throughout the year.

EnrichmentOn a regular basis, the Sixth Form participate in enrichment sessions selected to suit your needs. These occur five times a year, over a double lesson in place of Sixth Form PE on a Wednesday afternoon. A variety of IAG topics are covered in these sessions such as; Sexual Health, Drug Awareness, Fair Trade, Safe Driving and the UCAS application process.

Sport in the Sixth FormDevizes School is a Sports College and we have a strong sporting legacy. Sixth Form students have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of leisure activities in the timetabled PE afternoon on Wednesdays. Students are given the opportunity to choose the activities they wish to take part in on a lesson by lesson basis. Participation in these activities also broadens references for students and enables them to demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills.

Where do our students go after Sixth Form? The majority of Year 13 students go on to study in Higher Education, (73% in 2014) including Oxbridge & other Russell Group Universities. Other destinations include Further Education, a Gap year, an apprenticeship or employment.

The student destination page on the Sixth Form area of our website out-lines where the previous cohort went on leaving Devizes Sixth Form.

Applied ScienceBTEC Level 3

Course structureExam board Edexcel Course codes: Level 3 Certificate - 6726, Subsidiary Diploma - 6725

The BTEC Level 3 Applied Science qualification is made up of the Level 3 Certificate (equivalent to one AS Level), and the Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to one A Level). In year 12 students study 3 compulsory units, these are:

Unit 1 Fundamentals of Science

Unit 2 Working in the Science Industry

Unit 4 Scientific Practical Techniques

Once these units are completed (at pass, merit, distinction or distinction* Level) you will achieve the Level 3 Certificate, the equivalent of one AS Level. You can then go on to study 3 units on more specialist areas of Science in year 13, which when combined with your Level 3 Certificate will give you the Subsidiary Diploma, the equivalent of one A Level.

Assessment methodsStudents will be assessed through production of a portfolio of assignment work based around practical experience, experimentation and research. There are no external exams.

Why study BTEC Applied Science? This course is a brilliant opportunity for those who studied the Level 2 BTEC Certificate at Key Stage 4 to continue their studies in Science, or for those students who wish to study Science in a more job-related and practical context. It will also suit students who wish to study Science further but have not achieved the grades required for individual sciences at A Level.

Where could BTEC Applied Science take me?If students complete the Subsidiary Diploma (two years of study) they will have completed more specialist units in particular areas of Science eg Applied Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Successful students could go on to university in a number of subjects or would be ideally placed to pursue a career in a science laboratory environment.

What are the entry requirements?C grade in GCSE Core and Additional Science. C grade in GCSE Maths C grade in GCSE English

Course structureExam board WJECCourse codes: AS - 2181, A2 - 3181

AS: FM1 Exploring Film Form AS: FM2 British and American Film

A2: FM3 Coursework unit A2: FM4 Varieties of Film Experience

Assessment methodsFM1 Coursework - close analysis, creative project

FM2 Exam - 2½ hours

FM3 Coursework – small scale research project, creative project

FM4 Exam - 2¾ hours

Why study Film Studies?Moving image film is arguably the most popular and accessible form of artistic expression after music. Understanding its appeal is part of what a film student does. So too is understanding the creative process and decision making: unpicking how and why the director manipulates our response. Like literature, through film we can immerse ourselves in the worlds and lives of others.

Where could Film Studies take me?For students who wish to study film further, there are a number of excellent degree courses in areas such as Film Making, Screen Writing and Film Theory. It can also be combined with other subjects for Media, Journalism, or English related subjects.

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in GCSE English Literature or English Language. Students with high C grades would be considered, on the recommendation of their GCSE English teacher.

FrenchAS & A2

To have another language is to possess a second soul. Charlemagne

Course structureExam board AQA Course codes: AS - 1651, A2 - 2651

AS: FREN1 is the Listening, Reading & Writing paper AS: FREN2T is the Speaking paper

A2: FREN3 is the Listening, Reading & Writing paper A2: FREN4T is the Speaking paper

Assessment methodsThe AS (Unit 1) paper is a 2 hour exam worth 70% of the total AS marks and is split into 3 sections; the listening exam is student-controlled – that is, the material will be on an MP3 player which you can listen to as often as you wish. The Writing part of the paper is an essay-style question. The Speaking exam (20 minutes) is also based around the topic areas covered – you don’t need to prepare a presentation and you will be well-prepared for the structure of the exam. The A2 exams follow the same structure, with Unit 3 being 2 hours and Unit 4 another 20 minute exam. The main difference is that you will also have some translation tasks as well, and the essay question is based around the cultural topics studied.

Why study French?First and foremost, speaking another language is an amazing skill to have. As our nearest neighbours, we have always had close links with France, but don’t forget, French is spoken worldwide and you never know when French might be of use to you. The skills you learn in your Language lessons will be useful in many other subjects; you learn how to construct essays, you learn how to form balanced opinions and you are asked to think about things in a different way.

Where could French take me?The possibilities with Language learning are virtually endless. Many university courses can have a language element attached to them, and this will give you the opportunity to spend a year abroad which is an incredible opportunity. Speaking another language to a higher level is becoming increasingly important to employers.

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in GCSE French.

+ 3,500-4,000 word coursework

Why study History?Studying History is a journey of discovery. Students learn to understand the world and at the same time are trained in high Level skills that create independent young adults. Universities and employers value these skills. The ability to organise facts and develop arguments, to analyse problems and make reasoned decisions are the skills honed by this well-respected subject.

Where could history take me?History can lead to History focused careers such as Archaeologists, Museum Curators and so on. However, being realistic, most students who take History at A Level will not continue with the subject beyond university except for interest and pleasure. This makes the subject no less vital to the futures of young people as the skills developed through the subject are key skills for success in business and life in general. Famous people such as our current Prime Minister and Sacha Baron Cohen have History degrees to thank for their own personal development. History graduates are sought after and successful people.

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in GCSE History.

A Level PE gives me the opportunity to keep fit but also to widen my knowledge of the sporting world. It has been an excellent successor to the GCSE course.

Physical EducationAS & A2

Course structureExam board OCR Course codes: AS H154, A2 H554

The course will involve an in-depth study of the theoretical aspects of sport and a practical based assessment.

The theoretical areas covered include the Anatomical and Physiological, Socio-cultural, Historical and Psychological aspects, which influence sporting performance.

Assessment MethodsYear 1 Students are assessed in their practical ability in two chosen activities in conditioned competitive situations or ability to coach/lead activities. In addition there is one 2 hour external exam paper to test theoretical knowledge.

Year 2 Students are assessed in one practical ability and are required to verbally analyse their own and others performance and use their theoretical knowledge to explain strengths and weaknesses. At A2 there is a 2 and a half hour external exam paper.

Why study Physical Education?Laboratory and field based experiments will introduce students to an understanding of sporting performance through theoretical application.

Students will be involved in class discussions, individual research, group work and teaching.

What are the entry requirements? An interest and aptitude for the study of sport is essential.

Students who achieve an A or B at GCSE in PE and A - B in Science will have a basic grounding in many areas of study at A Level but individual applications for those who have not studied PE at GCSE Level will be viewed on merit (GCSE average points score of more than 40). Students must be regularly participating in at least one sporting activity.

Where could Physical Education take me?Students who study the course may go on to study PE and other sports related courses at a higher level.

Studying A Level PE would be extremely useful to any career in Sports Studies, PE or the Leisure Industry. All of the fields are extremely lucrative and diverse in terms of the opportunities they offer for Higher Education and career development.

Why study Physics?Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines & is the most basic and fundamental science. Physics encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. It explores questions like how did the universe begin? How will it end? What is a black hole? Is time travel possible? If you have an enquiring mind, always asking why things happen, then physics will help you find the answers. It forms the basis of most modern technologies and holds the future to global well-being.

Where could Physics take me?The career opportunities available to a Physics student are as vast. As well as studying Physics at University it will play a vital part in all Engineering, Architecture, Music Technology, Astronomy, Environment & Climate Control, Medical Physics, Communications, Geophysical Surveying & Computer Games Design to list a few.

What are the entry requirements?BB in GCSE Science and a B in GCSE Mathematics. However for success in A Level Physics, A grades in both Science and Maths at GCSE is more realistic.

PsychologyAS & A2

Course structureExam board AQACourse codes: AS - 1181, A2 - 2181

AS: PSYA1 Cognitive psychology, developmental psychology & research methodsAS: PSYA2 Biological psychology, social psychology & individual differencesA2: PSYA3 Topics in psychology such as eating behaviour, sleep & relationshipsAS: PSYA4 Psychopathology, psychology in action & research methodsAssessment methodsAS ExaminationsPSYA1: 11/2 hours exam PSYA2: 11/2 hours exam A2 Examinations PSYA3: 11/2 hours exam PSYA4: 2 hours

Why study Psychology?Ever wondered why you find certain people attractive but not others? Why good people do bad things? Why you dream at night and what it means? Or whether it really is possible to hypnotise someone or accurately ‘profile’ a serial killer? Well if you are someone full of similar questions, then psychology is for you. Quite simply it is the fascinating, intriguing and often enlightening study of human thought and behaviour, and we seek to make sense of human nature from four traditional perspectives (biological, cognitive,

behavioural and psychodynamic). But studying humans as a human oneself is no mean feat, and you will also acquire a good grounding in research methodology, ethical issues, and data analysis as you search for accurate ‘proof’ and understanding of both others and yourself.

Where could Psychology take me? Where won’t it take you? The study of human thought & behaviour is relevant to all courses and careers where you will inevitably have some dealings with other human beings! As it is equally rooted in both the arts & science/maths you will be well equipped for a wide range of future possibilities. Professional psychologists work in all manner of environments, including advertising, sport, education, the military & the NHS. However, many professions & industries now recognise the importance of psychology as a key factor in improving performance & well-being, and so it is a highly desirable & adaptable qualification to have.

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in English Language, Science and Maths to enable you to cope successfully with the topics covered and the complexity of research methods/data analysis.

Why study Religious Studies?Religious Studies is one of the most valuable subjects to study in the tumultuous and diverse society that we live in today. It is a highly regarded, academic discipline that challenges and questions

the essence of humanity. It uses and promotes higher level skills of critical analysis and reasoning to examine questions that have puzzled humans for centuries. It enables young people to develop their skills of evaluation alongside an understanding of morality, tolerance and diversity. We can’t promise answers, but we can promise an extremely enjoyable and challenging subject!

Where could Religious Studies take me?Religious Studies can take you just about anywhere! Religious Studies is highly regarded amongst higher education institutions and leads naturally to a degree in any Humanities subject, as well as Law, Journalism or the Social Sciences. It is favoured by professions such as the Police Force, the Armed Forces and the Caring Professions, as well as those who study the subject purely for personal interest.

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in GCSE Religious Studies, full or short course.

SpanishAS & A2

Course structureExam board AQACourse codes: AS - 1696, A2 - 2696

AS: SPAN1 Listening, Reading and Writing paper AS: SPAN2 Speaking paper

A2: SPAN3 Listening, reading & writing paper A2: SPAN4 Speaking paper

All assessment is by exam - there is no coursework. Topics include Media, Popular Culture, Health and Relationships. At A2 the topics covered are the Environment, Multicultural Society, Social Issues and two cultural topics – for example a region of the Spanish speaking world or a film director.

Assessment methodsThe AS (Unit 1) paper is a 2 hour exam and is split into 3 sections; the Listening exam is student-controlled - that is, the material will be on an MP3 player which you can listen to as often as you wish. The Writing part of the paper is an essay-style question. The Speaking exam (20 minutes) is also based around the topic areas covered - you don’t need to prepare a presentation. The A2 exams follow the same structure, with Unit 3 being 2 hours and Unit 4 another 20 minute exam. The main difference is that you will also have

some translation tasks as well, and the essay question is based around the cultural topics studied.

Why study Spanish? One of the benefits of learning another language to a higher level is that the skills you learn will be useful in many other subjects. Spanish is becoming increasingly popular as companies develop their links around the world for example with South American countries where Spanish is spoken. You don’t have to want to be a Spanish teacher to reap the benefits of learning Spanish.

Where could Spanish take me?The possibilities with Language learning are virtually endless. Many university courses can have a language element attached to them and this will give you the opportunity to spend a year abroad which is an incredible opportunity. Spanish could literally take you “Around the World”!

What are the entry requirements?Grade B in GCSE Spanish.

Ask your current subject teachers for their opinion on your suitability. This is part of the Application Form completion process.

Speak to existing students, friends in the Sixth Form or possibly family members who are already on the courses you are interested in.

From your current progress and/or assessments (and mock exam results) work out whether you are on track to achieve the minimum entry requirements of at least 5 C grades. Check also that you are on track to achieve grades which meet the entry requirements for your individual subject choices.

If you are not, make the necessary changes to your work pattern to ensure that you get back on track.

Check that the combination of subjects you are thinking of is suitable for any future plan you might have. If you need help with this, talk to a Careers Advisor.Fill in the application form ahead of the closing date specified on it, so that you have time to ask for help if there is anything you don’t understand. Your tutor will be able to point you in the right direction if you’re not sure who to go to for particular help.Send your application in hard copy to the address written on the form or hand it in to Reception at Devizes School. Come along to our Open Evening with a list of questions you want to ask about the subjects you are interested in.

How to applyApplications to Devizes Sixth Form should be made on the application forms included. Alternatively it can be downloaded from the website.

The closing date for application is given on the application form. It should be returned to Devizes School in a hard copy on paper.

Applicants will be invited for interview during term 4 and offers of places, will be made in writing immediately following interview.

Applicants are expected to keep us informed should they decide not to fulfil their place out of simple courtesy. Should applicants wish to change a subject choice, this will be possible, even after GCSE results have been received, as long as there are still places on the course the student wishes to change to and they satisfy the relevant entry criteria. In the event that you do not achieve GCSE C grade passes in Maths and English, we will provide lesson support for the compulsory re-sits.

The Induction Day for all applicants is on 7th July 2015 from 8.30am to 3.00pm, starting in the Main Hall.

Here is a simple checklist to help you to make the right decisions:

≫ Make sure you have an application form.

≫ Make a note of the date of the Open Evening Thursday 20th November 2014 at 6.30pm≫ Make a note of the deadline date for applications.

≫ Make a list of subjects you may be interested in.

Questions to ask of yourself:Which subjects do I like?

Which subjects am I good at?

Which subjects do I need for the career I have in mind?

Are there new subjects that I should consider?

Am I best suited to academic or applied courses?

be a part of our success

In general, my Sixth Form has been a good experience and the only thing that has made it difficult or hard to enjoy has been my approach to it. I think perhaps I didn’t realise how little time you have in 2 years and eventually everything piles up and you find yourself juggling essays and coursework in the space of a fortnight, potentially not getting the grade you could achieve if you’d applied yourself. If there was a way to tell future students how important it is to actually apply themselves and for them to take it seriously, I think they would be much more successful first time!
