Park & Trail Signage Specifications

PARK & TRAIL SIGNAGE SPECIFICATIONS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 CONTACT INFORMATION

A. Indy Parks and Recreation (hereafter referred to as “Owner”) City County Building, 200 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204

B. RLR Associates, Inc. (hereafter referred to as “Designer”) 1302 N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202; phone: 317.632.1300

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This signage package consists of custom exterior architectural signage. Sign contractor to furnish all labor, materials, services, equipment and apparatus whether necessary or incidental to complete installation of all sign types required for the project as shown in the Signage Guide and specified herein.

B. Sign contractor shall coordinate and provide sign component design services necessary to properly integrate structural support systems into the various sign types as shown in the Signage Guide.

C. Where applicable, the sign contractor will secure any and all necessary permits for signage installation and work with the Owner to secure variances, should any be required.

1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Signage, mounting, and fastening devices shall be engineered, fabricated and installed components to withstand a minimum of 30-psf normal wind load to the sign, or greater as per local code, in addition to the weight of the sign.

B. Fasteners, support structures, support plates, anchor plates, and all other components covered by this section shall be of sufficient quantity, strength, and stiffness to prevent excessive deflection, warping, buckling, oil canning of signage components under specified lateral loads and self-weight of system. All hardware and fasteners within reach shall be vandal resistant.

C. Substitutions: No substitution will be considered unless the Owner has received written request for approval. Contractor may recommend equal or better equipment or method, but will be required, prior to the bid submittal, to provide full documentation establishing such a substitution’s equality or superiority as measured in: compliance with the visual design intent; cost; ease of maintenance; and performance. The burden of proof of the merit of the proposed substitute is upon the Contractor.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Selected sign contractor shall provide manufacturer’s technical data and/or cut sheets for each type of product and component specified in Part 2 - Products.

B. Shop Drawings: Selected sign contractor shall submit detailed and engineered shop drawings for each sign type for fabrication and installation. Hard copy and electronic PDF format no larger than 11”x 17” is preferred. The shop drawings for each sign type shall consist of:

1. Object views including: elevations, sections and enlarged details (such as of extrusions, structural details, attachments, assemblies, etc.). 2. Fabrication methods and processes 3. Structural/internal design with specs and dimensions (engineered for wind load when applicable) 4. Specific materials; including substrates, thicknesses, finishes, etc. 5. Fastening details and hardware with mounting details (brackets, footers, etc.) 6. Typographic and pictographic specifications with applicable brand labels and logos 7. Identification of any dimensional or other changes and deviations from the Signage Guide by virtue of the fabrication materials, methods and/or engineering

C. Samples for Selection and Verification: Submit manufacturer's finish and color charts, showing the full range of colors available with actual unit and/or section samples of all products specified. Include samples of paint, vinyl, acrylic, metal, laminate, masonry, etc. (using actual substrate materials). At least 3 square inches of material is required as a sample.

D. Prototypes for Selection and Verification: Selected vendor shall submit prototypes for the following listed sign types. Coordinate production requirements and finishes for each prototype with the Designer and Owner.

E. Maintenance Manual: Maintenance instructions and manuals for all sign components, along with amended shop drawings, shall be supplied by Contractor to Owner upon completion of punchlist items.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor and their installers are expected to have knowledge of ADA guidelines, general sign locating practices, MUTCD and any particular unique installations defined by Designer. Contractor shall follow these guidelines as well as landscape cues in installing for the best visual placement.

1. Contractor shall be knowledgeable of relevant local code requirements and honor same in fabrication and installation.

B. Installer Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who install products similar to those required for this project and whose installation process has a record of successful execution and completion.

C. Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom-fabricate products similar to those required for this project and whose products have a record of successful in-service performance.

1. Sign Source Limitations: Obtain each sign type from single source and manufacturer.

D. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with latest applicable provisions in ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines, ICC/ANSI A117.1 and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installation only when weather conditions permit installation of signs in exterior locations to be performed according to manufacturer's written instructions and warranty requirements.

B. Field Measurements: Verify mounting dimensions by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.

C. Structural Support: Verify appropriate structural support requirements for all signs.

Park & Trail Signage Specifications

1.7 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of signs that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

B. Contractor shall provide a written five (5) year full replacement warranty to the Owner that all signs will be free of defects due to craft work and materials including, but not limited to:

1. Bubbling, chalking, rusting or other disintegration of the sign panel, graphics or of the edges 2. Corrosion appearing beneath paint surfaces of panels, brackets, posts, support assemblies and fasteners (except as an obvious result of vandalism or other external damage) 3. Sign assemblies not remaining true and plumb on their supports 4. Fading, chalking and discoloration of the colors and finishes within the vinyl and paint manufacturer’s stated warranty period 5. Peeling, delamination, warping (“oil canning”) and deterioration of metal and polymer finishes beyond normal weathering 6. Repair and reinstallation of signage due to poor initial construction 7. Deterioration of embedded graphic image colors and sign lamination

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Aluminum Plate: ASTM B 209, alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for type of use and finish indicated, and with at least the strength and durability properties of Alloy 6061.

B. Aluminum Sheet: ASTM B 209, alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for type of use and finish indicated, and with at least the strength and durability properties of Alloy 3003.

C. Aluminum Extrusions: ASTM B 221, alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for type of use and finish indicated, and with at least the strength and durability properties of Alloy 6063-T5.

D. Steel: For steel exposed to view on completion, provide materials having flat, smooth surfaces without blemishes. Do not use materials whose surfaces exhibit pitting, seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade names, or roughness.

1. Galvanized steel sign post, anchor, & sleeve.

E. High Pressure Laminate graphic panel: graphic panels should be constructed using a high pressure laminate panel with embedded graphics.

F. Applied Vinyl: Die-cut characters from vinyl film of nominal thickness of 3mm with pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, and UV resistant material suitable for exterior applications. Match colors as designated (refer to Signage Guide, page 1)

2.2 FABRICATION

A. Construction Methods: The drawings call for a variety of fabrication techniques; as such, Contractors shall employ their best practices and methods to fabricate signs to meet the Signage Guide and the following:

1. Welded Connections: Comply with AWS standards for recommended practices in shop welding. Provide welds behind finished surfaces without distortion or discoloration of exposed side. Clean exposed welded surfaces of welding flux and dress exposed and contact surfaces. 2. Mill joints to tight, hairline fit. Form joints exposed to weather to exclude water penetration.

3. Preassemble signs in the shop to greatest extent possible. Disassemble signs only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for reassembly and installation, in location not exposed to view after final assembly. 4. Conceal fasteners if possible; otherwise, locate fasteners where they will be inconspicuous. 5. Structural Support: Contractor to provide miscellaneous steel and metal components for attachment and structural support of sign products as necessary.

2.3 GENERAL FINISHES

A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes.

B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping.

C. Appearance of Finished Work: Noticeable variations in the same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of other components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.

2.4 ALUMINUM FINISHES

A. Coatings for aluminum: Mathews Paint (or similar) applied according to manufacturer’s specifications. Match colors as designated (refer to Signage Guide, page 2)

2.5 STEEL FINISHES

A. Surface Preparation: Remove mill scale and rust from uncoated steel, complying with SSPC-SP 5/NACE No. 1, "White Metal Blast Cleaning," or SSPC-SP 8 "Pickling."

B. Factory Priming for Painted Finish: Apply shop primer specified below immediately after surface preparation and pretreatment.

C. 2.6 PANEL SIGNS

2.7 ACCESSORIES

A. Anchors and Inserts: Provide nonferrous-metal or hot-dip galvanized anchors and inserts for exterior installations and elsewhere as required for corrosion resistance. Use toothed steel or lead expansion-bolt devices for drilled-in-place anchors. Furnish inserts, as required, to be set into concrete or masonry work. All exposed fasteners shall be a security type requiring special tools for removal.

2.8 FONTS & TYPEFACES

A. The fonts used for this project were selected specifically for this project, and include the following: Myriad Roman, Myriad Bold, Myriad Italic.

1. It is the responsibility of the fabricator to purchase the fonts. Purchasing information can be obtained at the following websites: www.adobe.com, www.fontshop.com, www.linotype.com, etc.

2. No substitution of any other typefaces may be made. Under no circumstances are typefaces to be electronically distorted (“squeezed” or “extended”) for purposes of fitting to the specified sign or general alteration of the sign face composition unless noted in the drawings. This includes (but is not limited to) stretching, squeezing, tilting, outlining or shadowing.

3. All letterforms, symbols or graphics shall be reproduced either by photographic or computer-generated means. Hand-cut characters are not acceptable. Cutting shall be done in such manner that edges and corners of finished letterforms will be sharp and true. Letterforms with nicked, cut, ragged, rounded corners, and similar disfigurements will not be acceptable.

4. All letterforms shall be made from material and gauge as indicated in Signage Guide. Typeface and spacing shall be replicated as indicated on the drawing.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Location and placement: Locate signs and accessories where indicated, using mounting methods of types described and complying with manufacturer's written instructions and/or best practices.

B. Ground Mounted Signs:

1. Install signs level, plumb, and at heights indicated, with sign surfaces free of distortion and other defects in appearance. 2. Signs located on sloped grades and may require uneven footings—provide as needed. Site-verify all locations to determine special requirements for footing templates, as required.

3.2 PUNCH LIST

A. Contractor is required to complete a walk through with the Owner immediately following installation to identify any errors, such as construction or installation issues. Such errors are identified on a “punch list” with the actions necessary to address the issue. Punch list items are to be corrected in a timely manner, and to the satisfaction of the Owner.

3.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. After installation, clean soiled sign surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions. Protect signs from damage until acceptance by Owner.

3.4 SITE RESTORATION

A. Contractors and subcontractors are to keep the Owner’s premises and the adjoining premises, driveways and streets clean and clear. At completion of work, Contractor and subcontractors shall remove all rubbish, tools, equipment, and surplus materials from the premises, and leave the site as originally found.
