Text/Audio Narration: Oh Hi, I’m Linda. Over the next few minutes I will be explaining the TE Medical demand planning process to you. During the presentation, if you have questions or want more information, click on the ‘I’ in the top-right corner or you can open the Table of Contents at any time by clicking on the double arrow in the top-left..Now let’s get started. In this training we will go over 3 major topics. First, we will get a good understanding of the definition of demand planning. Next, we will identify who is engaged in the process and their roles and responsibilities. Finally, we will walk through the process of measuring and assessing the accuracy of the forecasts we build. When you’re ready to move on, click on the navigation arrows in the bottom-right.

Text/Audio Narration: So what exactly is a demand plan, and why do we go through the demand planning process? A demand plan is a formal request made by the organization’s sales and marketing team to the supply chain. The purpose is to ensure that all of the necessary materials and resources are available when they will be needed. We use this process to accurately forecast the resource needs of the business as we are serving our customers.

Text/Audio Narration: So let’s take a look at who has responsibility for what during the demand planning business cycle. Demand planning is a 24-month process that most significantly impacts the sales and product marketing teams. During the first half of the process – the first 12 months – the sales team has primary responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of the forecast. It is their job to XXX. At the same time, the product marketing team is responsible to ensure that the forecast expectations are reasonable from a manufacturing standpoint. XXX In the second half of the demand planning process, these roles are revered, with sales focusing on the reasonableness of the forecast, and marketing paying most attention to the overall accuracy of the forecast.

Text/Audio Narration: You may be wondering why we bother with this whole forecast accuracy thing. Understanding and predicting customer demand is vital to the success of our integrated business planning process. Even though we know that our forecast will never be absolutely perfect, we can use it to plan resources, staff, and equipment to optimize our supply chain. As I said, our forecast will never be absolutely perfect. How do we tell what is ‘good enough’ then? XX

Title: Demand Planning Scene: Forecast Accuracy Explained

TE Medical uses the Weighted Mean Absolute Percent Accuracy (WMAPA) method and measures at time periods equal to Lag 2, 4, 6 and 12.

Weighting is based on the unit price of each part for all segments except:

Accuracy is imperative to our delivering a high level of service to our customers, managing inventory levels and keeping our factories running efficiently.

Page 18: Notes: Use Myriad Pro font thoughout, with 28 point titles, 24 point headings and 20 point text. Title slides/blurs in from right to left. Chart grows

Notes: Show the entire formula at the start. As each piece is mentioned in the narration, emphasize it with a highlight box.

Animation (yes or no): Yes

Text/Audio Narration: Forecast accuracy is calculated as the absolute value of the difference between the forecast level of demand and the actual level, all divided by the actual level. Subtracting this value from 1 yields a percentage value that describes the degree of accuracy in our forecast. Now let’s walk through an example of how this formula works.

Text/Audio Narration: Let’s imagine that we have forecast a total demand of $100 million. However, when the figures come in, we see that our actual demand was $120 million. How would we calculate our demand accuracy using the previous formula? Let’s plug the given values in and see how this works out.

Following the steps in the formula shows us that our forecast model had a calculated accuracy of slightly more than 83%.

Notes: After the first paragraph of narration, fill in the Absolute error row. Highlight each component as this is filled in.

Animation (yes or no): Yes

Text/Audio Narration: This chart is called the forecast accuracy waterfall. It is used to evaluate our forecast accuracy at set time intervals, in this case 2 periods post forecast. Notice that the absolute error row is calculated as te difference between the forecast that was made and the actual demand that was observed 2 periods later. This is the numerator in our accuracy formula. Watch as we calculate these values. The Forecast results row represents the overall result of our accuracy formula. Remember that this is 1 minus the value of the absolute error divided by the actual demand.
