Subject Calculation of monthly irrigation water requirements Arroyo Seco and Rio Lucero New Mexico

Per your request I have calculated the monthly irrigation requirements associated with the transfer of water rights appurtenant to 1445 acres of cropland in the vicinity of Arroyo Seco and the Rio Lucero in Taos County

Monthly consumptive irrigation requirements were computed for this cropping pattern published in the 1969 SEO Hydrographic Survey using the SCS Modified Blaney-Criddle Method as originally published in SCS Technical Release 21 and long term weather data averages published by Kunkel (1984) for the 1931-83 period of record for the Taos weather station

Farm delivery requirements (FDR) were computed assuming an on-fann irrigation efficiency (Ef) of 50 and project diversion requirements (PDR) from the ultimate source of supply (ie a reservoir or stream) were computed assuming an off-farm conveyance efficiency (Ec) of 70 These values are consistent with those used in the calculation of irrigation withdrawals and depletions for New Mexicos five-year water use inventories

For the purpose of comparing water supply with demand and the quantification of water supply shortages it is suggested that the available surface water supply be taken as 70 of the reported streamflow This figure is applied to the water supply analysis to reflect the fact that it is not technically feasible to divert 100 of the streamflow into the off-farm conveyance system This criteria is consistent with the assumptions used by the SEO to estimate available streamflow for the adjudication of irrigation water rights water right transfers and water use inventories
