What is demography?

Page 7: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

What is population distribution?

Page 9: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

“Population distributions are descriptions of locations on the Earth’s surface where individuals or groups live.”

Page 10: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

In what places on Earth do you expect to find the most people living?

What common traits might these places exhibit?

Page 11: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

What is ecumene?

Page 12: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

“Ecumene is the portion of the Earth’s surface occupied

by permanent human settlement.”

Page 13: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

Common Traits of Ecumene

Almost 90% of all people live north of the

equator.

More than half of all people live on about 5% of the land, and

almost nine-tenths on less than 20%.

Most people live in areas close to sea level.

About two-thirds of world population is concentrated within

300 miles of the ocean.

How do you measure population?

Page 15: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

“You measure population by looking at Population Density;

the number of people occupying an area of land.”

Page 16: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

• The total number of people in an area.• Population divided by Land Area

Arithmetic Density

• The number of people supported by a unit area of arable land.

• Provides insights into the relationship between the size of a population and the availability of resources in a region.

Physiological Density

• The ratio of the number of farmers to the amount of arable land.

Agricultural Density

Page 17: AP Human Geography: Unit 2 Powerpoint: Population and Migration (Sample)

Discuss how the agricultural density of the United States may have changed over the last 200 years.
