The Messenger ONLY A QUARTER!
Several years ago a minister moved to the Houston, Texas area. Some weeks after he ar-rived, he had occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much
change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “You better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.” Then he thought to himself, “Oh, forget it, it’s only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway the Bus Company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet.” When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change.” The driver with a smile replied, “Aren’t you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change.” When the preacher stepped off the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, and held on, and said, “O God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter!” Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read. God bless you!

What an awesome beginning to Holy Week at First Church! Our special Palm Sunday worship service was held in conjunction with the grand opening of our newly renovated sanctuary.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! …..to all members of our First Church family who took part in making this day very memorable for everyone who at-tended. The teams did an outstanding job in planning and preparing the service, facilities and meal. We want to send a special “shout out” to Bob and Wilda Patton for going the extra mile in preparing the church grounds for this special event. The concrete work provided a beautiful (and safe) entry to the newly renovated sanctuary.
If you or someone you know would like to be added to our prayer list,
fill out a request card and drop in offering plate or contact the
church office.

SOCIETY OF ST. STEPHEN
Started in 1967 in Houston, the local group formed in 1978 as a joint effort
of First United Methodist Church and Chapelwood. The group has grown
since that time to include Christ Lutheran Church.
The purpose of the Society of St. Stephen is to help families who
temporarily need monetary support due to circumstances beyond their
control. Calls for assistance are distributed to various members of the
society, who in turn have telephone interviews with the persons requesting help.
Areas where help is given include partial rent payments, food, utility bills, and
medical needs --- cash is never given.
Funding for the Society comes from all three churches,
communion offerings, individual contributions, and
other fundraisers.

A Message from the Finance Committee...
“God has never taken a vacation or a sabbatical; let’s support God’s church even while we are on vacation.”
Through April, our church’s budget situation is looking up! We greatly appreciate the contin-
ued support of our First Church family, as well as the extra efforts of our staff and ministry
teams to keep our expenses in check.
With the vacation season quickly approaching, please remember that the church’s ministry
doesn’t take a break; it goes into full swing. In
fact, it is as busy - and costly - as any other
time of the year. There’s VBS, church camp, and
many other activities, all of which are spiritually
formative events but also cost money. Please be
mindful of the financial needs of your church as
you prepare for summer vacation.
Thank you!
Your First Church Finance Committee

What a pleasure it has been serving as the ministry leader
for Submerge during this school year. We’ve had water
balloon fights, silly string wars, ski challenges and bean
bag toss competitions. BUT, we’ve also prayed with each
other and learned some interesting lessons from the Bi-
ble.
Our last meeting for this school year will be on Sunday,
May 18th. Our 5th and 6th graders will be invited, but we
are also inviting the 4th graders so you can get an idea of
what you’ll be doing in Submerge next year.
Look for more information about the May18th Submerge
in the bulletin and in emails.
If you have a 4th grader, please contact me, Kim
Copeland, at [email protected] or 832-741-3932

God is Talking to Me It is amazing to me that if we stop, rest, and think about our life- God will reveal just what we need to hear.
I have been trying to figure out a solution to a problem. It has been a thorn in my side. Making decisions
isn't always easy, but God says in the Bible:
"Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time we will gather
a crop if we don't give up." Galatians 6:9
That's endurance- sticking with what you started even when it gets tough. When you are exhausted, when
things don't happen the way you want them to, when you want to quit- remember that Jesus is on your
side. He can give you the faith to continue on. He is worth all the pain. Only Jesus can give you the strength
you need!! So come join us this month, as we experience the JOY of finishing what we started.
Week 1- Disciples being filled with the Holy Spirit
Week 2- Paul and Silas being thrown in prison
Week 3- Finding a reward for our hard work
Week 4- Special vision that God gives John
I pray that everyone at First Church knows how much God loves them and knows that God is good all the
time, all the time God is good. May you feel Him especially when life gets tough! Endurance reminds
me about the children's story: The Little Engine That Could.... no matter
what, believe in yourself and keep going, no matter what. Thank you God
for talking to me!!! I love you!
Praising God Always,
Kimberly Bowers
