“If there was ever a model citizen, Tug would be that person. His respect for others is off the charts. He is committed to Newport, its students, and his own success. There have been countless times where I have heard the phrase, ‘If I had a son, I would want him to be just like Tug Smith.’ I don’t know if there is a higher compliment than that.” Those are the type of words that were spoken about NHS’s freshman student of the month Tug Smith. Similar words were also spoken about many of the other students recognized Wednesday, December 16th at NHS’s Student of the Month assembly. Cydni Lewis was the freshman female student of the month. Adopt a Cub Feeds Newport Families!

The Associated Student Body of NHS conducted their first annual “Adopt a Cub” activity this year.

Presents and food were collected in advisory classes to be given to two families in the Newport School District.

The identity of the families is being kept secret, but it is believed that one is a family of seven, and the other is a family of five.

NHS students hope that these and all families enjoy a Happy Holidays!

Holiday Door Decoration ContestBy Kody Campbell

The Newport High School advisory classes competed in a Christmas themed door decorat-ing competition this year.

The competition was judged on five aspects: creativity, original-ity, positivity, adherence to the rules, and how they included our school’s mission statement.

Mr. Farnam’s class came in first place, followed by Ms. Morazzo in second, and then Mrs. Pierce in third.

Winners were announced at the NHS Student(s) of the Month assembly on Wednesday, De-cember 16th.

Monday, December 7th, Newport High School welcomed back Stu Cabe who assists with our “Breaking Down the Walls” program.

Stu brought with him personal stories, and illustrated the fact that human interactions often have emotional consequences and cause people to release a chemical called cortisol. Cortisol is the chemical within an individual’s body that causes the feeling of having “butterflies.”

Stu used personal stories from his own life to illustrate the affects that people have on others through the course of daily social interaction. He spoke of himself and his own kids to show how words and actions can cause others to have a lump in their

throat or butterflies in their stomach.

He illustrated to Newport students and staff that you can cause a person to have good butterflies or have bad butterflies with a possible lump in their throat.

Stu also explained that there are two kinds of acts of kindness. There are random acts of kindness, and there are intentional acts of kindness.Random acts of kindness are actions that are directed toward another person, but the reason you do them is because it makes you feel better about yourself. An intentional act of kindness is when you do something kind toward another person or other people with the desire of making them feel good or happy without any expectation of anything in return.

Stu asked the students if they wanted to be the person to cause someone to have good butterflies and make them happy or cause them to be upset and have a lump in their throat.

To start, go to bed at night and think, “have I done any harm”, says Stu. If not, you’re doing great.

Stu has challenged Newport School

District to perform intentional acts of kindness to make the people and our environment around us just a little happier.

Stu also visited Sadie Halstead Middle School on the same day. His visit to SHMS was the first introduction of Breaking Down the Walls at the middle school.

One does not have to look very hard to find NHS stu-dents exhibiting intentional acts of kindness. These days there’s almost a feeling of family when walking
