New to Newport High School but Not Really

New Wrestling Coach, High ExpectationsAs the fall sports season draws to a close, Newport High School begins to look forward to the upcoming 2016-2017 Winter Sports season!

This year the Newport wrestling team has a new head coach, Adrian Bojorquez. Coach Bojorquez’s team lost

two senior wrestlers last year: Jensen Kirkwood and Alex Solis.

Both competed at the 2016 State Wrestling Competi-tion. However, rumor has it there is a group of talented freshman wrestlers who will be joining the team this season.

This year, Bojorquez’s goal is to have intense practices where wrestlers can train their bodies to be able to leave everything they have out on the mat.

Coach Bojorquez expects his team to wrestle with heart and passion, and he doesn’t believe that anything less will be conducive to a successful season.

He said he would like to, “...build, grow, mentor and nurture young men and women in such a way that each can realize their full potential for success as wrestlers in our league.”

Bojorquez believes that his team will be competitive with the best teams in the NEA this season. He hopes that the community, wrestling families, and student body will be more involved this season, but overall he is expecting a very good year for the NHS wrestling team.

This year NHS has a new addition to its staff: Mrs. Sarah Noble!

Mrs. Noble originally worked at NHS for two years as a paraprofes-sional and two more as a librar-ian. She now returns as a certified teacher!

During her years as librarian, the NHS library was known as the un-official “Math Tutoring Center” as Mrs. Noble was constantly provid-ing students with awesome assis-tance with their math studies.

So, Mrs. Noble decided to go back to school and earn her math teach-ing certification.

Mrs. Noble did her student teach-ing with Newport teachers such as Mrs. Honhorst, Mrs. Behrend, and Mrs. Ralston.

After working at Priest River Junior High as a math teacher, she re-joined the Grizzly Family for the 2016-2017 school year to teach Ge-ometry and Pre-Calculus at NHS.

“While working at Newport as a paraprofessional and librarian, I decided to get my math teaching certification, and I knew when I was done I wanted to come back and work at NHS because of the awesome staff and kids!”

Recipe To Success Includes Hard Work and Fun I recently had the privilege to in-terview the Newport Grizzlies’ head

basketball coach Jamie Pancho.

Coach Pancho provided a sneak peek at what he hopes this season will be like. Coach Pancho is very enthusiastic about this year and can’t wait for it to begin! Accord-

ing to Mr. Pancho last season “went well” thanks to some of his senior leaders such as, Ty McDaniel, Otis Smith, Kyler Zorica and Kaben Hast-ings. Last year’s seniors played a key role in the Grizzly boys almost mak-

ing it to state, but falling short by only six points. This season though our boys plan on attempting to make it all the way. Coach Pancho is definitely ex-cited to see some new and returning players and see what leadership roles they will play. Two of Newport’s returning players are, Danny Bradbury and Koa Pancho. While he expects these players to take on leadership roles, he knows that everyone will have a certain leadership role to play this year. When asked what he thought his team’s strengths would be Coach Pancho said that speed and rebound-ing will be great strengths. Coach Pancho says that Owen Leslie and Robby Owen are great

rebounders and he plans on them excelling this season. Overall Coach Pancho says that his team is full of players who are willing to work hard and have fun at the same time. While there are the mental hurdles every team goes through, Coach Pancho is confident they can overcome them and become a better team because of it. The Grizzly boys finished last season with a 14-9 overall record and an 8-6 league record which was good for 4th place in the Northeast A League. The Grizzlies tip-off this year’s season Tuesday, November 29th when they host Bonners Ferry. Both girls and boys will play that night starting at 5:45PM.

Keep your eyes peeled for this year’s Newport School District/KUBS FM Holiday Card!! The above card was a product of NHS’s Digital Media & Broadcasting program. Nearly 1,500 cards were sent out last year. This year’s card should be in the mail shortly after Thanksgiving Break.
