Newport High school is currently one of only four schools in the state of Washington who offer all four Nationally Certified courses in the Biomedical Science Program.
The program helps high school students develop strong backgrounds in Science and Engineering. Biomed uses hands-on curriculum, challenging students to achieve their highest potential.
There are four exploratory courses in the program: Human Medicine, Organs and Tissues, Disease Diagnoses and Treatment, and Design Innovation Solutions.
“Principles of Biomedical Sciences” (PBS) is the first course a student takes in this program.
In this course there are amazing opportunities where students examine
and inspect a fake crime scene. This project allows students to follow a crime case involving a fictional victim named Anna Garcia.
Student research and examine this victim’s circumstances throughout the course and find out all the health problems with her and dig deeper into the science behind her situation. Taking these courses and getting involved in the program allows students to apply for 3 college credits from Missouri University of Science and Technology. Students must earn a letter grade of a “B” or higher to qualify for these credits.
There is a charge for the college credits - $250 for each 3 credit course. If a student successfully completes all four courses, the student has the ability to earn 12 college credits.

This year the class of 2016 started what they hope will be a new tradition at Newport High School. This year’s seniors started senior sunrise.
On September 25th over half of the NHS senior class gathered at Don K. Ellersick field and together watched the sunrise.
The sunrise symbolizes the beginning of the final year that the seniors will spend together. Later this year the
seniors plan to get together and watch a sunset which will represent the ending of their final year together.
Most of the senior class have grown up together, have become life long friends, and have shared life long memories from kindergarten till now.
About 45 students attended senior sunrise. Out of those seniors about half have gone to school together for 12 years.
The Newport Grizzlies Varsity Football Team had another rough night last Friday when they lost at Lakeside to the Eagles.
The Grizzlies face the Deer Park Stags Friday night, October 2nd in Deer Park. Kick-off is at 7PM.
If you can’t make it to Lakeside, or any Grizzly Varsity football game, be sure to tune in to 91.5 FM KUBS or log on to NHS’s web page for live play-by-play of every Grizzly Varsity football game - home and away!
This year’s Homecoming Football Game is scheduled for Friday, October 9th against the Medical Lake Cardinals.

Robotics is the newest class to hit Newport High School.
Robotics is a new class at NHS that teaches students the basics of robotics and computer programming and how the two intertwine to create robots.
A robot is a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of tasks or actions automatically.
Mr. Altmaier, the School’s librarian, teaches the class. This is his first year teaching a high school class. The class is taught third period.
Students use logic, reasoning skills, safety procedures, and existing computer knowledge to create robots.
Students also use skills learned in other classes such as English, Algebra, and Geometry to figure out problems and to help them build working robotic machines.
Students benefit from this class by learning the values of teamwork, use of common sense, comprehension, computer usage, planning, and communication skills.
The class offers a CTE (career and technical education) credit towards graduation. Although the class offers no post high school opportunities right away, jobs and schooling options could be opened in the future.
Students in the class will be able to attend various competitions throughout the year. Skills USA offers competition opportunities at the local, state, and national levels.
