A FINAL “DIRECTOR’S” CUT

NH District

Website

Hello everyone, Bonnie and I hope every-

body had a fantastic Christmas and a Hap-

py New Year.

As I was cleaning out all the Christmas

receipts from my wallet, I noticed the

date on my membership card: May 2016-

over ten years with this great organiza-

tion. We remember when we first visited

NH-A. We stopped to “check out” the group at one of the bowling

events where we first met Glenn Daniels. I really liked Glenn and a few

years later we found out his real intent-to “set us up” as NH-A Chapter

Directors as he was getting ready to retire! (JK, Glenn…we STILL like

you!)

And what a ride it has been from four Christmas Parties, a Valentine

sweetheart banquet, motorcycle drive in movies, RIDES (overnight rides,

inter-chapter rides, inter-District rides), a camping weekend, SO MUCH

ice cream, SO MANY dine-outs, pounds and pounds for can tabs, winning

District Chapter of the Year twice and being awarded Runner Up-Chapter

of the Year in Region B and most recently being named NH-A Couple of

the Year. This ride as had more curves and excitement than the Tail of the

Dragon at Deal’s Gap!

Now that 2016 has come and gone we would like to take a minute and

first thank all of the officers with in Chapter NH-A starting with Scott and

Cheryl Smith (ACD), Glenn Daniels (our Chapter Director mentor, MEC

& Store Keeper), Julie Bernier (Chapter Treasurer), Richard Bernier

(Chapter Educator) Doug Melanson (Assistant Chapter Educator), Ellen

Morrisette (Newsletter Editor), Chris and Lynne Christensen (Newsletter

Editors, ACD and now our NEW Chapter Directors), Paul Morrisette

(Ride Coordinator) and all the Members of the Chapter for supporting us

in everything we have done. THANK YOU . We could not have done it

without all of you.

A special thanks to all the NH-A Road Captains for taking the time to

become trained and continuing your training every time you went out for

a ride and thank you for ALL the wonderful rides you have planned and

taken us on.

Now that 2017 has arrived we would like to thank all the current officers

for staying on and for the new Chapter Directors Chris and Lynne Chris-

tensen for stepping up. Bonnie and I have the upmost confidence that all

of you will do a fascinating job. We hope we can continue to serve you as

District Directors for New Hampshire and are SO proud to call NH-A

“OUR HOME”.

FROM YOUR NEW CHAPTER DIRECTORS...

Happy New Year to all of our GWRRA friends. It seems that 2016

flew by in a couple of months, but Thanksgiving , Christmas and all

the New Year Celebrations are behind us. Now it’s time to forge on

into 2017 and give it our best shot and make this year just as spec-

tacular as the last.

With all the great gatherings, fun rides and loyal friendships, it’s go-

ing to be one heck of a year. We have already been bowling and

have pottery creations planned. We are working with Bonnie and

David to organize NH-A volunteering on cooking and serving break-

fast for Bethany Chapel. The church will get the proceeds of the

breakfast and NH-A will get the proceeds of the 50/50. We have been very fortunate that they accommo-

date us for our gatherings and many other events we offer.

Next up is a whole 12 months full of FRIENDS, full of FUN, coupled with SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE.

We are fortunate to work and compile knowledge from each other and GWRRA, through our Chapter Ed-

ucators and our Trainers.

With rides going to unexpected destinations, over new and exciting roads, with all their splendor, with the

exception of Frost Heaves (not a motorcyclist friend) and maybe a U-Turn or an ICE CREAM stop

thrown in, it will be another great season for riding.

This years New England Rally in Sturbridge MA, looks to be bigger and better than last year so we hope

to see you all there .With our new District Directors and NH-A Couple of the Year, David & Bonnie Bol-

ster, New Hampshire District is in for quite the ride.

Bill Bascom of NH-E has set up a Color Coded Calendar for the NH District. Bill, many thanks for the

phenomenal job. Volunteers account for 100% of Region, District and Chapter participants. Without all

the combined efforts, we would not have the support like we have in NH-A. So a big THANK YOU for

all your hard work. Lynne and I look forward to working with each of you, in continuing to make NH-A

the best it can be… We look forward to seeing you at our next event.

Chris & Lynne

On December 17th, members of NH- A went caroling at Villa Crest Nursing Home in Manchester. We

sang some old songs and learned a new song from one of the residents.

It was really heartwarming to see their smiles, see the toe tapping underneath the tables as they sing along

to our music. I don’t know who enjoyed it more, the residents or us.

Santa Claus came in right on cue to the song " Here Comes Santa Claus". Many of the women warmed

right up to him.

After all the singing, we made a stop at Friendly's for ice cream and Santa brought a smile to a very excited

boy. He was also a big hit with the young and old alike.

On December 3, 2016, NH-A, had their 2016 Christmas Party at Belmont Hall in Manchester New Hamp-

shire. Great fun was had by all.

The night would not be complete without music. As always, Dick Bernier puts on a great show.

The food was superb, the company was great and we had members from NH-E, NH-G, and NH-T present.

Thank you for joining us.

Road Captains received puzzles made from pictures of there respective rides.

Bonnie Bolster received a very loving tribute from her hubby David, along with a plaque featuring her Trike.

Yes, Bonnie accepted his rose.

SANTA even made an appearance announcing the winning numbers to the Yankee Auction. Great items like

a customized blanket from Scott Smith’s ride, gift certificates, shirts, candles and the list goes on.

Our Sponsors are always very generous to us as...so please support them.

COUPLE OF THE YEAR

In October 2016, the previous Couple of the Year winners met to select the 2017 NH-A Couple of the

Year.

NH-A is proud and honored to announce that David and Bonnie Bolster are the 2017 Couple of the

Year. They give so much of themselves, unselfishly, and their tremendous hard work, great leadership, and

outstanding efforts to make GWRRA NH-A what it is today. In there four years as chapter directors, they

have made great strides in the increasing numbers of new members. Through their efforts NH-A has been

selected as Chapter of the Year twice and second place for Region Chapter of the Year. David and Bonnie

appear to have an endless amount of energy, creativeness and enthusiasm. Their passion for riding and try-

ing to increase the awareness of GWRRA is endless, to the point of pursuing (stalking?) motorcyclists to

join GWRRA.

Also, a warm, heartfelt congratulations to them for becoming NH District Directors. No Doubt, they will

do phenomenal things. NH Chapters are in for a great ride...so hold on.

Motorcycle First Aid Kits

A Motorcycle first aid kit has special needs, mainly due to the limited space available on a motorcycle to carry a first aid kit, as well as the items needed to treat the most common injuries that bikers may experience.

A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment for use in giving first aid, and can be

put together for this purpose by an individual or organization or purchased complete. There

is a wide variation in the contents of first aid kits based on the knowledge and experience of

those putting it together, and the differing first aid requirements of the area where it is likely

to be applied.

First aid kits can be assembled in almost any type of container, and the container used may

depend on whether they are commercially produced or assembled by an individual. Standard

kits often come in durable plastic boxes, fabric pouches or in wall mounted cabinets. The

type of container will vary depending on the purpose of the kit, and will range in size from a

wallet size to a large rucksack.

It is recommended that all kits are in a clean, waterproof container to keep the contents safe

and clean. Kits should also be checked regularly and restocked if any items are damaged or

have passed their expiration date.

Commercially available first aid kits that are obtainable via normal retail routes have tradi-tionally been intended for treatment of minor injuries only. Typical contents include adhe-sive bandages, regular strength pain medication, gauze and a low-grade disinfectant. Specialized first aid kits are available for various regions, vehicles or activities, and may fo-cus on specific risks or concerns related to an activity. For example, first aid kits sold through marine supply stores for use in watercraft may contain seasickness remedies which are unlikely to be found in non-marine kits. A Motorcycle First Aid Kit has special needs. A basic, ordinary first aid kit just won't cut it. This has to do with size as well as the types of common injuries that bikers may experience, which will influence the contents of the first aid kit. The size of the first aid kit will be lim-ited, mainly due to the limited space available on a motorcycle to carry a first aid kit. Common injuries for motorcycle riders are:

Burns – can range from minor sunburn to severe burns from exhaust pipes and other heat sources.

Eye injuries – from things flying or blowing into the eyes. Cuts and abrasions – typically caused by literally hitting the road.

Fractures

Page 8: “A”WESOME NEWS€¦ · It seems that 2016 flew by in a couple of months, but Thanksgiving , Christmas and all the New Year Celebrations are behind us. Now it’s time to forge

When packing a motorcycle first aid kit, or looking to buy one, consider kit contents that are used to stop bleeding, treat burns, abrasions and cuts, and treat eye injuries. It is also very important to know the purpose of, and how to use every item in your motorcycle first aid kit – otherwise it's just taking up space. Commonly recommended Motorcycle First Aid Kit contents:

A good compact first aid book. Non-Latex Gloves – At least 4 pairs. CPR Mask. Antiseptic Wipes – 5 or 6 packet wipes. Antibiotic Ointment or powder – 6 individual packets. Anti-microbial Hand Cleaner (waterless) – 5 or 6 individual packets or a 3-6 oz. bottle. Band Aids – A variety of shapes and sizes for small cuts and scrapes, including knuckle and fingertip band aids. Steri-strips (Butter-fly sutures, Adhesive Sutures, Adhesive Closures) – Used to pull a small gaping cut or wound together. Large Combine Pads – For heavy bleeding. (Useful tip: Non-deodorant feminine hygiene pads are highly absorbent and great for stopping heavy bleeding. Cut them in half for easy storage and usability.) 5 Large Sterile Gauze Pads – For bleeding. Most first aid kits do not have enough gauze or absorbent dressings to be useful in a motorcycle kit, so pack additional dressings. 5 Medium Sterile Gauze – If you don't want to carry this smaller size carry extra of the larger size and cut them down to what you need. Emergency Blanket – These are great for retaining body heat and can be used for coverage in rain and for ground cover. Normal Saline in 10ml vials – This doubles as an eye wash or wound cleanser. Instant Cold Packs – These are useful for treating burns, bruising, swelling and sprains. They are single use so if you have space grab a couple for your kit. Burn cream or gel – Aloe Vera aids in healing, pain relief, has anti-inflammatory properties that helps pre-vent blistering and scarring. Triangular Bandage – For slings, padding, strapping limbs to splints when fractures are suspected.

Trauma shears – 5” or larger, preferably the heavy-duty, 7½” size. You'll need to be able to cut

through leather. You won't have time to unzip and undress, and if there is heavy bleeding you'll

need to be able to cut through the leathers.

Curved Scissors – Scissors come in handy in many ways. Curved medical ones are great as they

don't have sharp points. In an emergency, you might need to cut clothes away from an injury, and with

sharp points it can be easy to poke through something and cause further injury when you are in a hurry or

under stress.

3 or 4 Self-adhering Roller Gauze Bandages – Different widths are useful, but 2" and larger are of-

ten more versatile than smaller ones.

Tweezers – A good pair of tweezers has easy-to-grip handles and can be used for splinter removal

and other first aid procedures.

Tape – 2 rolls of 1” tape.

Medication – Pack the travel size or sample packets not the bottles. These are usually small packets that

contain 2 to 4 pills. Or put the pills in small zip-lock bags and label them carefully.

* Anti-diarrhea tablets

Continued from previous page...

* Anti-acid tablets * Antihistamine for mild allergic reactions, such as Benadryl * Pain reliever, such as Tylenol

Penlight and/or Glow Sticks – High intensity emergency glow sticks are useful as a light source and for directing traffic or signaling for help.

Heavy Duty Zip-lock Bags – These have a ton of uses, including removing used and contaminated gauze, gloves and dressings, and can be used as extra gloves in a pinch. Mobile phone – Most people have one these days but worth mentioning since it is not an obvious first aid kit item.

Of course, getting all this stuff in a container small enough to fit on the motorcycle can be a challenge. Look for soft sided waterproof zippered cases. And believe it or not you should be able to get all this stuff in a bag about 7" x 5" x 3". It can be done! Now that you know what to have in a motorcycle first aid kit, you may be interested in learning how to use it properly. For that, enroll in the MEDIC FIRST AID ® training program that teaches CPR, AED

During WWII, U.S. Airplanes were armed with belts of bullets which they would shoot during dogfights and on strafing runs. These belts were folded into the wing compartments that fed their machine guns. These belts measure 27 feet and contained hundreds of rounds of bullets. Often times, the pilots would return from their mission having expended all of their bullets on various targets. They would say, we gave them the whole nine yards, meaning they used up all of their ammunition.
