For most of us, we view Labor Day Weekend as the “official” end of summer, the beginning of a new school year for the kids, and for most of us it means that vacations are over. But for the Motorcyclists in all of us it means less cars on the roads, except for the Big Yellow School Buses we all love to be behind. It means that the temperature will be a little lower, a little less humid and a much more pleasant riding experience. We are more likely to ride farther, longer and with a bigger smile on our faces. With all of that in mind, lets remember the school buses mean more children near the roads, drivers that are a little more aggressive than usual and can be more frustrating for us. Take a little extra time to get where you are going and present a positive attitude to the public as we face these obstacles. We need to project a good image that lives up to our mission for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Appearances are everything when we are amongst 4 wheelers, they can be turned into the people that stop traffic for us as we ride in groups and we have seen a lot of that in the last 2 years or so. We have a great fall of riding coming up with the beauty of turning leaves and the holiday seasons, that will be upon us before we know it. So, lets ride Safe and enjoy the rest of our riding season, no matter how much riding time we have left. If you are riding to Wing-Ding, please ride safe and have FUN. See you in September. Labor Day in the United States is

a public holiday celebrated on the first

Monday in September. It honors

the American labor movement and the

contributions that workers have made to

the strength, prosperity, laws and

well-being of the country. This is the

Wikepedia definition of Labor Day. For

most of us, we view Labor Day Weekend as the “official” end

of summer, the beginning of a new school year for the kids, and

for most of us it means that vacations are over. But for the

Motorcyclists in all of us it means less cars on the roads, except

for the Big Yellow School Buses we all love to be behind. It

means that the temperature will be a little lower, a little less

humid and a much more pleasant riding experience. We are

more likely to ride farther, longer and with a bigger smile on our

faces. With all of that in mind, lets remember the school buses

mean more children near the roads, drivers that are a little more

aggressive than usual and can be more frustrating for us. Take

a little extra time to get where you are going and present a

positive attitude to the public as we face these obstacles. We

need to project a good image that lives up to our mission for

Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Appearances are everything when

we are amongst 4 wheelers, they can be turned into the people

that stop traffic for us as we ride in groups and we have seen a

lot of that in the last 2 years or so. We have a great fall of riding

coming up with the beauty of turning leaves and the holiday

seasons, that will be upon us before we know it. So, lets ride

Safe and enjoy the rest of our riding season, no matter how

much riding time we have left. If you are riding to Wing-Ding,

please ride safe and have FUN.

See you in September. Chris & Lynne

Glenn’s Points to Ponder

WHEN WEARING A BIKINI, WOMEN REVEAL

90% OF THEIR BODY. MEN ARE SO POLITE

THEY ONLY LOOK AT THE COVERED PARTS.

Always borrow money from pessimists - they

don’t expect it back.

Riding in the Heat

Doug Melanson

Chapter Ride Coordinator—District University Coordinator

At the August gathering, Bruce Luhrs and I presented the GWRRA Module: When You’re Hot – You’re

Hot, with lessons about riding in hot weather. This was a timely topic with the very hot and humid

weather we’ve been experiencing, and especially timely for those headed down to Wing Ding in

Knoxville on their motorcycles.

This class provided essential information about riding in hot weather, including how to prepare

yourself and your motorcycle for hot weather riding, as well as addressing some first aid topics for

dealing with heat related issues and injuries. We also discussed how hot weather can affect road

conditions and other aspects of the environment we ride in such as tar snakes, road work projects,

an abundance of insects (unless we’re on a bug run when they hide on us), animals in the road, and

children and pets playing outdoors.

One of the biggest issues we have to deal with as riders in hot weather is also a very preventable one - dehydration.

The best way to stay properly hydrated is to drink plenty of water; staying hydrated keeps us more comfortable

and alert when riding. Signs of dehydration include a dry or sticky mouth, little or no urine output, lack of tear

production, sunken eyes and lethargy. As soon as you notice any of these symptoms, pull over and rest in a shaded

or air-conditioned area and drink plenty of water (not too cold or too fast to avoid stomach cramps). Remain resting

until you feel fully restored.

Failing to stay properly hydrated can lead to heat exhaustion, a very serious ailment that can have serious

consequences leading to heat stroke. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include excessive sweating, headaches,

weakness or fatigue, nausea, irritability and dizziness. Treat heat exhaustion the same as you would treat

dehydration, and actively try to cool the body with cool compresses or ice packs applied to the neck, groin and arm

pits.

It is very important to properly treat heat exhaustion when the very first signs of it appear, because if left untreated,

heat exhaustion can very quickly develop into heat stroke, a much more serious condition characterized by bizarre

behavior, hallucinations, altered mental status, confusion, disorientation, and possibly convulsions and coma. Heat stroke is a true medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. If heat stroke is suspected, call EMS (911)

immediately and take aggressive measures to reduce the patient’s body temperature by any means possible.

Without prompt and appropriate treatment, heat stroke can result in death.

So, when riding in hot weather, stay hydrated and keep cool to stay safe and enjoy the ride!
