HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god

of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s

largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We

named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us

ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own

Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and

weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and

weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The

Anvil.

Greetings from your Captain,

There is a lot going on for our club. We will have a cookout for the July Social so plan for a day of fun on

July 9. Also in July we have the premier of Star Trek Beyond on July 22. We are planning as a group to attend

the afternoon of Saturday July 23th at the Summit on 280. This would be a great time for people who are Star

Trek fans to get to know about some of the things we do in the area.

Also August 12-14, is the International Conference for STARFLEET. Brenda and I will be attending and

looking forward to meeting people from others regions in STARFLEET. If anyone else is going, let us know

and we can meet up to do some of the panels as a group. This is also pushing the social to Aug 20, so mark

your calendars of the change.

Be on the lookout for a trip to the Zoo with the Dejah Thoris in August or September. Also an

announcement about Alabama Phoenix Festival in conjunction with the Hoover Library should be coming soon.

That Event will be sometime in October.

I thought he brought a genuine spirit to Chekhov in the recent Star Trek movies. He had a great talent, one

taken far too soon. He will be missed.

I Cannae Change the Laws of Physics! By Fleet Captain MarkAdam Miller

Engineers are the most important people on a Starship. Without the engineers the Starship is not going to be

able to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life, new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone

before. Star Trek has introduced us to some of the best that Starfleet has to offer. The engineers might have

been in the background but they played their part to get the mission accomplished. U

When most people think of a Star Trek Engineer they think of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott played by James

Doohan. Scotty was always there to give the conditions of the Engines and have a solution that, in the end,

would save the day. Scotty might say, “I cannae change the Laws of Physics,” (The Naked Time) but he knew

enough to bend them to save the ship time and time again. Scotty was to engines like Brahms was to music.

Scotty was called a miracle worker because of the many times he pulled the Enterprise out of trouble. The

Miracle Worker was in part because Scotty seemed to get things done in half the time he said it would take. In

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn and in the TNG: Relics it was hinted that Scotty exaggerated the time it would

take to get something done so that he could look like a miracle worker. On a personal note, I think when Scotty

gave how long it would take to fix something he was going on the average engineer and not the miracle worker

he was.

When we come to The Next Generation we did not get a reoccurring Chief Engineer until the second season.

The first season we saw four different Chief Engineers. LT Commander Argyle, Lt Logan, Lt Commander

Sarah McDougal and Lt. Commander Leland T. Lynch. There was no reason given why there was not a

specific Chief Engineer in the first season but the error was corrected by naming Lt Commander Geordi La

Forge Chief Engineer. Both Argyle and MacDougal would show up in later seasons but they would be engineer

supervisors and not the Chief Engineer.

Geordi brought a no-nonsense approach to engineering. He would get it done right and fast. Geordi was

different from Scotty in that he was more methodical in getting things done. It would take a suggestion from

someone else (i.e. Data) for Geordi to think outside of the box to get an impossible job accomplished. His no-

nonsense and methodical ways would ruffle the feathers of Scotty when he shows up in Relics. Scotty’s charm

does soften Geordi by getting Geordi to understand that there is an art as well as a science about engineering.

This is best shown when Scotty and Geordi get Scotty’s crashed ship, the Jenolan, flying again. What we see in

Geordi is a student who is learning to write his own rules when it comes to engineering.

In Deep Space Nine, the closest we come to an engineer is Miles O’Brien. Since the space station really

doesn’t have to move under its own power, the station really didn’t need an engineer. What we get is a

maintenance worker. Miles has a good sense of how things works but is more of a tinker then an engineer. By

being a tinker, Miles does a good job of keeping Deep Space Nine up and running. He has to always be vigilant

since the station is mostly of Cardassian construction with Federation parts to replace the broken parts.

Miles does get to be engineer when the go out in the Defiant but again he is more tinker since the Defiant

has several bugs that were not worked out before she was put into service. A lot of Miles’ frustration is that he

knows what needs to be done but he doesn’t have the time or the equipment to get it done right. Luckily he is

good at MacGyver-ing things so that the station and the Defiant will run. He plans to fix it right later but most

of the time something else comes up and he doesn’t get around to it.

When we get to Voyager we are given a person who is like Scotty in B’Elanna Torres. She also has a talent:

engines just speak to her. She gets the position of Chief Engineer over a Starfleet Engineer, Lt. Carey, through

her out of the box thinking. The problem is, that way of thinking also causes some of the problems that

Voyager has. If she had stayed in Starfleet, she would have received the knowledge and experience to better

understand when to take chances. Talent may give you an edge that others don’t have but you still have to

receive training to get better.

The last engineer is Commander Charles “Trip” Tucker III (Enterprise). Since he is one of the first starship

engineers you could say he wrote the book all the others are reading. The pattern of the tinker-engineer comes

out again. Since the engine for the Enterprise is the first Warp Five engine, Trip is all the time working to see if

some small adjustment might just get the response he wants. We don’t get a good look at Trip as an engineer

because his story line is mostly how he screws up when they meet other cultures.

JJ Abrams’ Star Trek is using the same characters as the original series and Scotty (Simon Pegg) is

portrayed as the usual miracle worker that he was in the original series. We do get a look at Chekov (Anton

Yelchin) as Chief Engineer but he plays it as knowing about engineering but still doesn’t have the experience to

handle the job.

Because most of Star Trek deals with space and you need a ship to do that, you also need an engineer. Of

all the engineers I have seen, the best (to me) will always be Scotty (James Doohan). He knew what his ship

could do and how to get her to do it. So if you have a Starship then get Scotty to help and you will be exploring

the galaxy in no time.

Thoughts by others:

Montgomery (Scotty) Scott (TOS) is known as the ship’s miracle worker. He is the Enterprise’s Chief

Engineer. There's no one you'd rather have at the controls of the transporter when you're ready to beam

up from a mission. Geordi LA Forge (TNG) is blind (from birth) but uses a VISOR (Visual Instrument

Sensory Organ Replacement) to see. In other words, a sightless man is placed in the position of piloting

the ship. Apparently he is good at his job for he is soon promoted to Chief Engineer. Miles Edward

O'Brien (DS9) may complain about the jury-rigged systems on DS9 but he loves the challenge. He

transferred from the Enterprise D where he served for nearly six years. Since his transfer, he has been

falsely accused, incarcerated, and tortured by several alien governments. His job may be a pain on DS9

but at least he has his wife Keiko, lovely daughter Molly and son Kirayoshi to help him cope. B'elanna

Torres (Voyager) is half Klingon and half human. During her brief stint at Starfleet Academy, she

excelled in the sciences but found herself at odds with her instructors and colleagues over almost every

aspect of Starfleet life. She drops out in her second year and joins the Maquis Resistance where she

meets Chakotay. After the Maquis were stranded in the Delta Quadrant Torres accompanied Chakotay

to Voyager, where Janeway recognized her skills and rewarded her with the top slot in engineering.

Charles (Trip) Tucker (Enterprise) is the third senior officer on the Enterprise, after Archer and T'Pol.

He's an ace engineer who's always up for the next challenge, whether it's upgrading the ships weapons

systems or extracting a confession of affection from the tight lipped T'Pol.

As to engineers over the years, nothing beats the broad Scottish Smile of Montgomery Scott

exclaiming "There be whales!" That moment of exhilaration may be a huge reason why my favorite Star

Trek movie to this day is (and I know I'm in a small group here) The Voyage Home. "Hello, computer!"

Also because he represents my Scottish heritage and he portrays the best traits in a good military

maintainer. He is unquestionably competent, yet honest, loyal, and trustworthy regardless the cost,

even including his own nephew.

Miles O' Brien is third. The reason I like La Forge is simple: I like the character as a person. It is really

the same for O' Brien but I think O' Brien has a funny side.

Race to Kentucky for IC 2016 By Vice Admiral Lucy Ferron Franck

The IC 2016 Committee invites everyone to attend International Conference

in Louisville, KY, on August 12-14. There will be plenty of fun, festivities,

and informational panels for first-timers and veteran attendees alike.

In the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Louisville is home to the famous

Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Kentucky bourbon producers,

Louisville Sluggers production (which has a museum), and the Muhammad

Ali Museum to name a few of the sites. It is also the home of the Hot Brown

Sandwich. I can’t wait to try a Hot Brown after reading the description: an

open-faced turkey, cheese and bacon sandwich with Mornay sauce.

The theme for IC 2016 is “Trekkin’ II: Horsing around on the Ohio!” We’ll be racing to the future as we

take you out to the holodeck and explore NASA and celebrate Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. The conference

hotel is the Crowne Plaza Airport Louisville. The hotel has plenty of roomy rooms to host all meetings, panels,

merchandise dealers, and fun times. We will be having all the traditional activities such as Opening

Recap: The Hephaestus crew is orbiting Kronos trying to keep peace between the Romulans and the

Klingons over misinformation provided by the Jem’Hadar and a Vorta. While conferring with the Klingons on

what they know, Mike discovers that a dead Romulan is part of a science team that consulted with the Klingons

on why Praxis exploded. Mike believes that the Romulan scientist is a Founder since that is the only way this

particular Romulan could be on the team.

After Mike revealed that Telok, the Romulan scientist, was a Founder, I looked at Martok and then back to

Mike. “This explains how the Jem’Hadar and that Vorta are here. Them going rogue after the Founders’ defeat

is just a story to get them on the Romulan side. But how can we convince the Romulans they are being duped

by a Founder?” I paused then turned and asked Mike, “Do you have access to the classified reports on the

science vessel and would we be able to show them to the Romulans?” Mike brushed the hair out of his eyes and

thought for a moment. “Yes, I have access and they could be shared with the Romulans since the Dominion

War made most of the information they collected out of date. The problem is I don’t think the Romulans will

believe it.”

Martok snarled, “Of course they won’t because the Romulans dogs have no Honor.” I had to stifle a laugh

at this since I knew the Klingons trusted the Romulans about as much as the Romulans trusted the Klingons. “I

will look at the reports,” I replied,” and see if we can get the Romulans dogs to lay down.”

Mike and I beamed back to the Hephaestus and I called my 1st Officer, Phillip, to bring him up to speed. As

we sat in the conference room looking over the classified report, Phillip started to have a funny look on his face.

“Spit it out Phillip. If you have an idea let’s get it out in the open because it looks like we are out of options.”

Phillip grimaced again, “I think I have something in my quarters that is going to help.” I looked at Phillip,

“What in the mountain of Tribbles could you have in your quarters that would help in this situation?” Phillip

looked away, “A Romulan ship data recorder.” U I censored my first three thoughts because as CO I have to

be above those comments, “Where in the universe did you get a Romulan ship data recorder? Never mind.

Don’t tell me. Section 31. Phillip if you weren’t such a good 1st Officer I would bust you clear down to

crewman for dealing with that group. Did Section 31 tell you anything about the data recorder?” Phillip

shrugged his shoulders, ”No, just… only use it if I have too”

After reviewing the Romulan ship data recorder to make sure that Section 31 had not tampered with it, Mike

and I thought we had enough evidence to prove to the Romulans that they had a Founder traitor that was playing

them. Mike called Vobok and we set up a meeting to discuss what was going on. Mike also made sure that the

Vorta was going to be there as well.

The Good That Men Do

The Enterprise Engineer Returns. For those of us that loved the idea of Enterprise but

mourned its last season, we have but to turn to the Star Trek Pocket Books Enterprise

series to relive adventures with some of our favorite characters from the earliest days of

the Federation. But what do you do when one of those beloved characters has sacrificed

his life to save his captain? Never fear, as Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin (the

team that brought us 22 Star Trek novels including Kobayashi Maru, Section 31: Rogue,

and two entries into Starfleet Corps of Engineers) weave an elegantly crafted revelation of

“newly unclassified” documents telling the real story of what happened to Commander Charles “Trip” Tucker

all those years ago.

Imagine yourself in the bayous of Louisiana in the early 25th century, soaked from a gulf storm and stepping

onto the porch of none other than Jake Sisko reuniting with his old childhood friend Nog. It seems they have

much catching up to do, but there’s more at play… A mystery looms in a crystalline isolinear chip that seems to

reveal the truth behind the events of 2161 that have been covered up by Section 31.

Perhaps no one tells the intrigue of the book better than Nog himself when he entices Jake saying, “This story

involves hew-mons, Andorians, Vulcans, Denobulans, and Romulans. It has kidnappings, assassination,

slavery, death, resurrection, and cover-ups. And it may just change everything we know – or everything we’ve

been told – about the founding of the Federation itself.” Nog’s data chip doesn’t disappoint, as it reveals a

series of well-realized dramas across a half-dozen worlds, satisfyingly ranging from battle scenes between

pacifist Aenar and hulking Orions to somber, diplomatic funeral processions. Favorite characters come into

play like T’Pol, Archer, Mayweather, Shran, Valdore, Soval, and even Odo (No, not Odo-Odo, but cat-Odo!).

All this to look forward to, and I haven’t yet mentioned the Romulan tests of their first warp seven ship and

fierce plan to dismember the five-race Coalition of Planets!

Within the first ten pages I was personally hooked into the narrative and had caught myself laughing out loud

more than a couple times. The Good That Men Do is, without any spoilers, an excellently crafted tale that

brings us a satisfying resolution to our 22nd century engineer’s story while saving the fledgling Federation in

the process. The story manages to function without seeming contrived, although you may have to slog through

a bit of depressing scene-setting to break through to the action that lies ahead. Overall I give Trip’s declassified

tale four combadges out of five for excitement, prose, and satisfaction. It’ll put a smile on any Enterprise fan’s

face.

Beta Test – Book Zero in the Mark IV Anna Series

I met Danny B. McGuire at Magic City Con. I was interested in his books because of

the discussions he gave at the convention about writing books. I am a fan of Robot

literature so was looking forward to his take on the subject. I was not prepared to be so

captivated reading his book: not only his great writing style but his knowledge of the

Science Fiction and Mystery genres.

This is his first book in The Mark IV Anna Series. So far he has written three books and

plans at least two more. Anna is an Android which is the first of its kind in infiltration

spy units. Mr. McGuire gives a riveting story of Anna from the time she comes online and through her learning

experiences for infiltration into human society. He writes mostly from Anna’s perspective which gives the

reader insights as to how she functions and the problems she has to deal with. By doing this the reader is drawn

into the story to such a level that it is hard to pull away because you feel as if you stop reading, the story will go

on without you.

Mr. McGuire does tip his hat to several writers that have gone on before him. He deals well with Isaac

Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics paying service to them without actually using them. He also gives a nod to

Ian Fleming’s James Bond’s contribution to the spy thriller genre. Even though it is not mentioned, I see nods

to Robert Heinlein’s H.O.L.M.E.S computer “Mike” from the book The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and to

“Data” from Star Trek: The Next Generation. I could mention more inspirations but that would spoil their

contributions to the book.

Part of Mr. McGuire’s style is to add humor and personal interactions between the characters that make them

more lifelike. Not only will you like certain characters and hate others but he gives you motivations for your

feelings that will surprise you in the end because you did not expect them. The twists that Mr. McGuire throws

in give you reasons to change your feelings for the characters from one chapter to the next which also motivates

you to keep turning the page.

If you like robot/android stories, mysteries, or spy novels I think you will like this book. Also, Mr. McGuire

added enough humor to take the edge off the darker parts but not so much as to make it a comedy piece. You

might have to buy two copies so you can put it with your science fiction books as well as your mysteries. (PS.

The language can be a little salty at times.)

Dream Jumper - Graphic Novel #1

I like to read comic books, but not really graphic novels. That is, until Greg Grunberg

(yes, that actor who played Matt Parkman in Heroes and Snap Wexley in the most recent

Star Wars movie) wrote his first one called Dream Jumper. With Lucas Turnbloom

doing the artwork, this story may appear more for kids and teens, but this is fun for all

ages.

It's the story of a boy named Ben who has the unique ability to go into other people's

dreams. He has to use this power to save other kids who have fallen into a deep sleep

and won't wake up. When he goes into a sleep clinic for a sleep study, he enters the dream realm where he must

start utilizing his powers and save the other kids. With the power of a unique stone, he discovers his true power

and understands what he has to do to keep the dreams of others safe.

I've always liked Greg Grunberg, and this being his first graphic novel, I thought the story was well thought

out, since it's based on the dreams of his son Ben. I tweeted Greg and told him to "bring on Dream Jumper #2!

I am LOVING this story!" He actually tweeted me back, thanking me for loving his work. Lucas Turnbloom

also replied by saying he's working on #2 now.

RiffTrax Reunion Show

RiffTrax was celebrating two milestones: its 20th show and ten years in

existence. Thanks to a very successful Kickstarter campaign (of which I was

proud to contribute), the ULTIMATE event took place as Mike Nelson,

Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (RiffTrax founders and MST3K cast

members) reunited with fellow MST3K cast members Joel Hodgson, Mary Jo

Pehl, Bridget Nelson (Mike's wife), Frank Conniff, and Trace Beaulieu, along

with new host of the revived MST3K, Jonah Ray.

The team riffed several shorts, such as A Word to the Wives, a short which actually features Darren McGavin

(Kolchak, the Night Stalker himself) riffed by Bridget and Mary Jo, More Dates for Kay by Frank and Trace;

Shake Hands with Danger, a classic Caterpillar equipment video riffed by Mike, Kevin, and Bill; and then the

craziest videos to end the evening: Stamp Day for Superman (with George Reeves) and Corn is Grass riffed by

all nine cast members. It was truly a night to remember for fans of MST3K, and I would definitely give the

laugh-fest a complete 5 out of 5 for making my stomach hurt from all the laughing I did.

if your theater is playing it. Also, the RiffTrax team will provide crazy commentary to the Japanese monster

classic Mothra on August 18th. I personally will be looking forward to that one!

This isn't what you think. It's the culmination of the United

Kingdom's most successful Kickstarter campaign which started last

year. The goal was to make just one of three brand new Thunderbirds

episodes using the exclusive mini-albums which were never made

into episodes in 1965. In addition, there would be the use of the

original Supermarionation techniques with the sophisticated

marionette puppets.

The end result: The THREE episodes were created, and only those who contributed to the Kickstarter

campaign were able to get their hands on the DVD or Blu-Ray of the newly created episodes. I was extremely

excited to get my DVD along with photo book and three CDs which had the actual mini-album episodes.

Introducing Thunderbirds did just that: It was basically a prequel to the 1960s series where Jeff Tracy

introduces Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward and her butler/chaffeur Parker to the amazing Thunderbirds

machines. U

The Abominable Snowman added some new footage starting with a fire at MEDDINGS Uranium (an obvious

homage to the lake Derek Meddings who did the special effects in the original series), but then the rest was just

like the mini-album, including the Hood (the Thunderbirds' arch enemy) in combat with International Rescue.

Finally, The Stately Homes Robberies (it's spelled correctly) has Lady Penelope and Parker having to stop a

pair of thieves from stealing the British Crown Jewels in the name of their families. Gordon Tracy in

Thunderbird 4 has to come to their rescue when the thieves plant a bomb in the Tower of London.

As a contributor to this campaign, I was excited enough if only one episode got made. Instead, all three were

done, and I was impressed overall with the seamless way they looked like they were made in 1965. Sadly,

Sylvia Anderson had passed away in April before the results could be seen, but I think she would be so proud to

know the next generation now knows about the classic version of Thunderbirds.

Star Trek News & More CBS Announces Guidelines for Fan Films

Because of the lawsuit against Axanar project, CBS/Paramount have given a set of Guidelines for what would

constitute a fan film. CBS/Paramount says they will not be policing fan films but if a fan film strays to far from

the guidelines then CBS may take action.

The guidelines have been met with mixed reviews. Some people believe they are what was needed along

where others feel that CBS over steped their authority. One fan film group Renegades has droped all Star Trek

references from their upcoming film The Requiem. Renegades producer said that going forward they will be a

separate identity from Star Trek.

The lawsuit against Axanar Project is still ongoing but CBS/Paramount believe they will be able to come to

some kind of settlement. It may not be until the end of the year as several issues still have to be addressed

before both parties are satisfied.

CBS is hoping with these guidelines that not only can fan films still be made but also their new series will not

be harmed by the fan films as well.

Studio model of TOS Enterprise back on display

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum has been

the home of the original studio model Star Trek TOS

Enterprise since it was donated by Paramount in 1974. It has

been displayed in different locations as the museum changed

over the years. It was last seen in a display case in the

downstairs gift shop.

The Smithsonian decided to give it a new home in the

museum when plans for redesigning the Boeing Milestones of

Flight Hall was being done. In September 2014 they took the model off display so that a team of

conservationists could look the model over and restore it to the glory it once was when it was a star on the Star

Trek television show.

After almost 2 years of pains-taking work to make it look like it did in the show and so that generations to

come could see it, the model was put back on display on July 1st at the celebration for the reopening of the

Boeing Milestones of Flight.

Features of the new display include State of the art climate control case, LED lights replacing the old lights

that will come on at different times during the day (11AM, 1PM & 3PM) and an interactive touchscreen

attached to the case allowing visitors to learn more about the model, Star Trek, and the Museum’s long interest

in imagined spaceflight.

The display not only gives you a view of the camera ready starboard side but you also can walk around and

see the less decorated port side where the wires for the lights and motors can be seen.

Mihaly 'Michu' Meszaros -June 13, 2016, age 76

Mr. Meszaros was an actor best known for being ALF when the show needed the character Alf to walk

around the set. He also was on TV shows Dear John and H.R. Pufnstuf. He also had parts in Look Who’s

Talking and Big Top Pee-wee. He died after falling into a coma.

Ronnie Claire Edwards - 14 June 2016; age 83

Ms. Edwards is known to Star Trek community as Talur in the TNG: Thine own Self. She is better known as

Corabeth Walton Godsey on The Waltons. She died in her sleep.

Anton Viktorovich Yelchin - 19 June 2016; age 27

Mr. Yelchin played Chekhov in the JJ Abrams Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek into Darkness. He will also

be seen in Star Trek Beyond. He died when his car rolled back crushing him between it and his

Mailbox/Security fence.

Noel Neill - July 4th, 2016; age 95

Ms. Neill is best known as Lois Lane to George Reeves’ Superman in The

Adventures of Superman (1953-1958). The truth is that she was Lois Lane before

Mr. Reeves was Superman. She played Lois opposite Kirk Alyn in the Columbia

Picture Serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). She also

did cameos in Superman (1978), Superman Returns (2006) and in the TV series

Superboy (1991). Now when we look to the sky we not only be looking for

Superman but Lois Lane as well.

The June social was great fun. We discussed the upcoming events in July and August. We also watched

Star Trek: The Next Generation on the BBC. We had Pizza for a small donation. A Birthday Cookie for Bren

Tiner and other June Birthdays. We also discussed the Magic City Con. Sue Ellen Newell Mohney and

MarkAdam Miller got into a heated discussion over if we should be rooting for Riker in the episode Peak

Performance. MarkAdam Miller was taking the stance that Riker was the underdog in the fight and Sue Ellen

Newell Mohney was of the opinion that Riker was never an underdog. Word to the wise… do not defend

Riker in front of Sue Ellen Newell Mohney! (LOL)

June 23, 2016 – Exploring Trek

We held our Exploring Trek panel at the local Comic Shop (Kingdom Comics) to introduce people to Star

Trek, STARFLEET and the Hephaestus. The panel discussed all the Tribble episodes: TOS: Trouble with

Tribbles, Animated: More Tribble, More Troubles and DS9: Trials and Tribble-ations. The discussion went

very well. We also had several Tribbles visit us. Next Month (July 28) we are discussing TNG: The Measure

of a Man.

I helped out Wonder Woman (Sally Johnson Morriss) at Kingdom Comics to raise money for the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society. Sally was selected as Woman of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

because of the money she raised at Kingdom Comics and other functions.

June 25, 2016 –Potemkin Pictures

I and 2nd Officer Brenda Miller went to the Potemkin Pictures Open House. Two of the studio’s actors who

are members of our crew, Ensign 1st Class Donald Arnold and Renda Carr assisted the owner during the tour.

It was interesting to see how much they can do with the little space they have. The studio had a Klingon

Bridge, Romulan Bridge, Sickbay, Crew quarters, Officer Lounge, Turbolift, a Transporter room and

Federation Bridge which is able to be set up as 3 different bridges. The facility also included make-up and

wardrobe areas.

Exploring Trek The June Exploring Trek discussed the Tribble episodes: TOS: Trouble

with Tribbles, Animated: More Tribble, More Troubles and DS9: Trials and

Tribble-ations. Since we were discussing three episodes the discussion of

singling out certain characters was curtailed so as not to run over the hour

and half time period we have set for the discussion. Several points that were

discussed were:

1. How producers of the series didn’t care for the Trouble with Tribble

episode and felt it was not a true Star Trek show even though it is a

favorite with the fans. U

2. How much they packed in the Anim ated episode More Tribble, More Troubles.

3. How DS9: Trials and Tribble-ations became the tribute show for DS9 to celebrate the 30th anniversary

of Trek.

Also for add fun three tribbles were in attendance during the discussion. No one fed them.

Follow up questions for the discussion:

1. Discuss the comedy differences between The Trouble with Tribbles and A Piece of the Action

2. Discuss the comedy differences between The Trouble with Tribbles and TNG: The Outrageous Okana

The next Exploring Trek is July 28th at Kingdom Comics. We will be discussing TNG:The Measure of a

It looks like Brenda Miller has someone challenging her lead at getting Academy courses done this year.

James Davis has been working on his academy courses and has completed 7 courses for the month of June

(Brenda only completed 5 courses).

James has a total of 36 courses done which means he is 14 courses away from his first Boothby (Bronze).

He still has a ways to go to catch up to Brenda who has 46 course done and is only 4 courses away from her

first Boothby. When it comes to Boothbys, they both have a ways to go to catch up to Donald Arnold who

has 4 Boothbys (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Latinum). Boothby is a STARFLEET Academy award awarded

each time you complete 50 courses. There are 54 Boothbys with the top being the Breen Star given to anyone

who completes 2700 courses. That is a lot of studying!

Anyone can take STARFLEET Academy courses. It is a perk of being a member of STARFLEET. So

Mike Burtyk took the Gold again in Name the Episode Contest. There were 10 scenes from Earth-like

episodes and you had to name the episode. Mike answered the most right with 10 out of the possible 10.

month is Name the Engineer. We are going to give you a picture of an Engineer. You will have to name the

Engineer, the actor/actress who played them and the episode they were in. Some of the Engineers may not be

Set a few years after Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country, this exciting fan film series takes place aboard the

starship Potemkin, an up-rated Constitution III-class heavy cruiser. It's on a five-year mission of exploration in

deep space where its crew encounters strange new worlds while seeking out new life forms and new

civilizations. The Potemkin is an older ship, one of the original twelve. She's been refitted a few times, but she's

one of the last of her kind. Its captain, a forty-year veteran of Starfleet, has a unique crew, mostly comprised of
