HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 262, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, Since we are having a Cookout this July, I thought maybe the cover picture was a good one for this issue. It could be said you are not a true fan of Star Trek unless you have a cookout. So come out to the cookout and have fun. Newsletter helps. If you or someone you knows is going to San Diego ComiCon or DragonCon, I would love to have a review or first hand report of what went on at the convention. If you went to any other convention I also would love a report on those. IC 2013 is coming up also and a report about that would be greatly appreciated. I also would love reviews of what people thought of the new Star Trek movie. If I get enough I would make the whole newsletter about the movie. These are just a few suggestion of what you can add to this newsletter. Deadlines are posted in the Away Team and Activity Schedule As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Here we are, well into July, the seventh month of the year. I found some interesting facts about July. First, the Roman Senate named it “Julius” in honor of Julius Caesar. And, among several important dates two very important events in July stand out. One is the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and the other is Neil Armstrong becoming the first person to walk on the moon July 20, 1969. Now, for some trivia; July is Anti-boredom Month, Hitchhiking Month, and National Hot Dog Month. So now you know. Now, for ship news. The Captain’s Cookout is almost here. Remember July 20 at 2:00 at The Mohney’s. Just bring yourself and your main course. Sides, snacks, and drinks will be provided. Also, remember the Vote of Confidence coming up in the fall. Details will be in next month’s briefing. That completes this month’s briefing. See you at the cookout. Pat Hicks [email protected]

The social was mainly a discussion of the new movie Star Trek Into the Darkness. We had a guest who came because of seeing us at the Alabama Phoenix Festival. We had pizza and soda. We ended the night by playing Dice Farmer.

Attendance: 8 people.

Personnel Updates:

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get

the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be

Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.

Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC

Academy has for you.

Medical Tricorder a Possible Reality

The medical tricorder may be a reality. The square device, called the Scanadu Scout, works with you’re

your phone. In ten seconds the Scanadu Scout reads your heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, blood pressure,

ECG, and emotional stress. This is then sent to your smart phone. The device is not only for Doctors but patients as well.

The doctors would get more information in thier app but the patient would be able to get a feel for what is going on with

thier health care. The Scanadu Scout is available by pre-order through Indiegog for $198. They will ship in March of

2014. The company is looking for FDA approval and will sell it to the general public once it is approved.

Remembering Star Trek’s first Klingon, Victor Lundin

Victor Lundin, the first Klingon on the original series, passed away on June 29. Jon Colicos’ appearance in

“Errand of Mercy” is assumed to be Star Treks’ first Klingon but Mr. Lundin appears as a Klingon lieutenant moments

before Mr. Colicos. Mr. Lundin is no stranger to Science Fiction as he appeared in Robincrueso of Mars, Time Tunnel,

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Batman and Babylon 5.

Easter Egg Hunt in Star Trek into Darkness.

J.J. Abrams and writers seemed to have written or placed several Easter eggs pointing back to previous story lines

of the Star Trek universe. I don’t want to give away any locations in case you want to search for your self but here is a list

of things you might want to look for: Tribbles(obvious one), Praxis Moon, Bay Stadium, Spaceflight future history, Dr.

Boyce, The Gorn, Daystrom, Harry Mudd, Nurse Chapel, Ketha Province, Caitains, and Alcatraz. This is not a full list.

There may be others. If you didn’t find these you can go to: http://trekmovie.com/2013/05/23/the-easter-eggs-of-star-

trek-into-darkness/ to find out where they are in the movie.
