WSO Annual Report – 2013-2014 Season I 4

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTThe Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s (WSO) 2013-14 season will be remembered as theyear the orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall. This project was the focus of so muchcommunity goodwill, excitement, and exceptional efforts on the part of WSO staff andmusicians. The benefits of participation in the Spring For Music Festival were significant. The recognition that this project garnered for the WSO in the local community and in thebroader international music community were important on a reputational and relationalbasis. The selection for participation in this prestigious festival and the opportunity toperform Canadian works on the stage of Carnegie Hall were a recognition of theimportance of the work we do in Winnipeg to explore new programs, composers, andformats. The wonderful community support and excitement around the project confirmed

and displayed the pride Manitobans feels for their orchestra. The hundreds of Manitobans who were at CarnegieHall on May 8, 2014 will remember the pride and pleasure of that evening for many years to come. The projectwas a success financially as well, and that is an achievement worth celebrating.

Besides the activity and excitement around the Carnegie Hall project, the WSO also accomplished many importanttasks on a local and institutional level. For the board of directors, this was a year of consideration and discussionregarding an up-dated strategic plan for the WSO. The new plan was adopted in March 2014, and it builds on thesuccesses of the 2008 to 2013 plan. The governance committee continued its work on board governance policiesthat follow up on last year’s revision of the WSO By-laws.

As an organization, we are pleased to report the seventh consecutive operating surplus for the WSO. This gradualincrease in the financial stability of the organization continues to be a significant focus and concern of the boardand staff of the WSO. We know that the benefits of fiscal health create a framework for the impact the organizationcan have in the community through its performance programs and outreach activities. Sistema Winnipeg continuesto make a connection with youth in the Elwick and King Edward schools. The program has completed its third yearof operations, and the impact of 15 hours a week of participation in the program is making a difference in lives ofthe participants and their families. We have been pleased to continue our partnership with the Manitoba Opera andRoyal Winnipeg Ballet as well as participate in national and local collaborative initiatives.

I thank my fellow board members for their work and contribution to the health and development of the WinnipegSymphony Orchestra. Dorothy Dobbie and Muriel Smith will be retiring from the board at the end of this season.During their eight years of service to the WSO board, they have both contributed significantly to the gradualimprovement in the finances and operations of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. We thank them for theirdedicated support of the WSO and recognize that they have left the WSO stronger and more resilient than theyfound it eight years ago.

5 I WSO Annual Report – 2013-2014 Season

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORThis is a year that feels like a turning point for the WSO in many ways. We have achievedmany strategic goals that have been part of our thinking and planning for the past sixyears, and we built on the successes of those years in crafting the strategic plan that willtake us to 2020. With a commitment to musical excellence and programs and initiativesthat are deeply engaged with the people and institutions of our home community, weknow that there is a bright future ahead for the WSO. In fulfilling our mission andworking toward our vision of an institution that serves its community with excellence andcommitment, while also building its reputation on an international level, we have acomplex and challenging road into the future. The plan for the way forward is ambitious, but there is a sense that Manitoba is entering an exciting and productive period ofgrowth.

No one involved with the WSO this year will forget the wonderful feeling of pride as the WSO musicians walkedonto the stage of Carnegie Hall. With red scarves waving, the hundreds of WSO supporters from Winnipeg madethe experience many times more exciting and memorable. New Yorkers were very impressed with the communityspirit and support that the WSO provided for its orchestra. We made a mark artistically and we made a mark asManitobans. When a project meets its artistic goals, its financial goals, its community goals, and is also great fun,we know we have succeeded.

I thank the staff of the WSO for the hard work and great spirit of collaboration, the board for its commitmentand dedication to the WSO, and the WSO musicians for providing so many moments of wonder and beauty forall of us to enjoy. This year, the WSO celebrates the careers and contributions of three WSO musicians: RaymondChrunyk, violin; Boyd MacKenzie, violin; and Zdzislaw Prochownik, bass. We also are very sorry to lose the energyand talents of Lisa Abram, the WSO’s director of marketing and communications for the past five years. We wishher well as she moves to Victoria, and we know that she will make an excellent contribution to the communitythere. We also thank Sarah Lund, Jason Hayes, Amanda Wilson and Andrea de Haan for their work at the WSO.We wish you all much joy and good fortune in the coming years.

Our 66th season has passed in a blur of activity, energy and musical exploration. For our loyal audiencemembers, our volunteers, our donors, our sponsors, our Women’s Committee, our staff, our musicians and ourboard, I have to say thank you for the difference you have made here. The WSO serves its community with prideand pleasure, and the community has demonstrated so much affection for its orchestra. I believe that the WSO isleading the way for orchestral and community collaboration, and this will be our biggest strength movingforward.

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOROur 2013-2014 season will always count as one of the most historic and special in the lifeof this organization because of our concert at Carnegie Hall.

We started out the season with the return of two international stars: André Laplante playing thepowerful Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 and James Ehnes performing Khachaturian’sViolin Concerto, not quite as known as the Rachmaninoff, yet an absolute gem.

It was the first year that we created a new festival based on the Russian composerTchaikovsky with several partnerships and Winnipeg collaborations.

For me personally, in November and December we performed two very special concerts,Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter) and Handel's Messiah. Both interpretations were

historically informed with beautiful results. Both programs featured quite young soloists or singers: 12-year-old UmiGarrett played a refreshing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Messiah was served dramatically well by four youngvoices and the University of Manitoba Singers, brilliantly prepared by Elroy Friesen.

In our New Music Festival last season we explored the ‘Beyond’ in every aspect. From the spiritual music of ArvoPärt and Valentin Silvestrov to the most extreme sound worlds of Glenn Branca to the cutting edge of a new workby Phil Kline and Jim Jarmusch, it really got people talking. The Hilliard Ensemble performed as part of theirworldwide farewell tour.

And then two more highlights, this time of the most romantic repertoire: Bruckner's majestic Symphony No. 8and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

Several audience members wrote this year about the quality of the orchestra’s playing, from Baroque to the classicsand the romantics to contemporary. The playing this season was exceptional.

Our guest conductors, Aziz Shokhakimov, José Gomez and Marc Piollet, added a nice dose of spice and colours.

Our Carnegie program by three living Canadian composers Derek Charke, Vincent Ho and R. Murray Schafer was a statement for Canada and signified the place this orchestra has in this country. The performance in New Yorkwas something that I will never forget.

Other highlights from our Pops series included the descent of Hollywood through George Takei and Babelsbergthrough Fritz Lang's Metropolis. We had lots of fun with Natalie MacMaster, Lindi Ortega, James Bond, ManitobaRocks! and the Peking Acrobats.

I want to thank everyone in administration and the board for this outstanding season.

13 I WSO Annual Report – 2013-2014 Season

BEYOND THE PERIMETER – TOUR REPORTThe WSO regularly packs up instruments andmusicians and heads out on the open road to takethe full orchestra to communities throughout theprovince and beyond. Our regular concert series inBrandon presented a wide range of musical offerings,as we have done, four times per season, ensuring thatmusic lovers in the Western regions of Manitoba canexperience the wonder of live symphonic music.Summer of 2014 found the WSO appearing inKenora, the large audience enjoying a lovely summerevening’s program of music dockside.

December was especially busy, as the orchestraembarked on its Power Smart Holiday Express Tour withfamily-focused holiday concerts in Steinbach, BakerColony, Winkler and Portage la Prairie.

Thanks to the Richardson Foundation, the WSO’sAdventures in Music education series saw Mayperformances in Brandon. Approximately 1,500elementary students were in attendance. This programworks closely with the school divisions to providemusical content and preparation for the students so thatthey find the programs stimulating and memorable.

The WSO continues to connect with rural schoolsthrough the Bach to School program. Each year a groupof five musicians visit five schools in small communitiesintroducing more than 1,500 students in Grades 1-8 tolive music.

As always, the WSO continues to explore touringopportunities in Manitoba to ensure that allManitobans may regard the orchestra as their own.

Carnegie HallThe jewel in the season’s crown was the orchestra’sperformance in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hallon May 8th. Our orchestra was chosen as one of sixfrom 32 orchestras that applied to appear at theweek-long Spring For Music Festival, the final timethis annual festival devoted to innovativeprogramming was to take place.

Over 800 Manitobans travelled to the “big apple” tohear and cheer the WSO on in an all Canadianprogram of music by R. Murray Schafer and our owncomposer-in-residence Vincent Ho, whose percussionconcerto The Shaman brought the house down in avivid performance by Dame Evelyn Glennie, theworld’s most renowned percussion soloist. DerekCharke’s Thirteen Inuit Throat Song Games featuredrenowned throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

The reviews were highly positive. James Oestreich inthe New York Times called Vincent’s piece “brilliantand compelling” and Alexander “conductedexpertly.” Following the concert, the large audience, dignitaries and musicians celebrated at New York’slegendary Russian Tea Room.

All of this could not have taken place without thetremendous efforts of the WSO staff, thedevelopment team in particular: JoanneGudmundson, Carol Cassels, Jason Hayes and all theother staff that assisted them. Every musician was“adopted” by enthusiastic patrons and supporters. No doubt the WSO’s star rose considerably from thismemorable event which was an unqualified successon all fronts.

WSO Annual Report – 2013-2014 Season I 14

2014 NEW MUSIC FESTIVALThis year’s New Music Festival (NMF) was anotherexciting event that pushed the boundaries of creativethinking. As this year’s theme suggests, “Beyond,” itwas a weeklong event devoted to exploring musicthat lays outside the academic realm. This creativevision, spearheaded by co-curators AlexanderMickelthwate and Matthew Patton, led to thecreation of a program that featured many innovativeartists of varying genres: Jim Jarmusch, VenetianSnares, Owen Pallett, etc. As a result, this year’sNMF programming enabled us to reach newaudiences of various demographics, many of whomhave never attended our event before, and saw thecreation of many new partnerships.

The initial vision was to showcase these two streamsof thought and to see how they are being expressedtoday. The opening concert presented this thesiswith two works by composers representing these twomusical worlds – Pierre Boulez (who was deeplyrooted in the contemporary philosophies of Europe)and Frank Zappa (who began breaking down thebarriers between the pop/rock and classicalcontemporary world). From there on, the rest of theweek showcased music by composers whorepresented similar contrasts. Using Frank Zappa asone model, we were proud to feature composers whorepresented his philosophical thinking:

• Owen Pallett (CAN) – Canadiansinger/songwriter who is now making a name forhimself as an orchestral composer (Violin Concerto).

• Jonny Greenwood (UK) – Member of the UKband Radiohead, who now has establishedhimself as a major contemporary classicalcomposer.

• Mychael Danna (CAN) – Hollywood filmcomposer.

• Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney (CAN/USA) –Experimental composers/performers.

• Venetian Snares (CAN) – Electronic sound artist.• Glenn Branca (USA) – Avant-garde composer

and guitarist known for his use of volume, alternative guitar tunings, repetition, harmonicseries.

This collection of artists allowed us to reach a newdemographic audience that was new to our Festival. They represented an “underground” scene that hasexisted for many years and are only now beingconnected to our annual event.

As the counterpoint to this, programmed alongsidethese works was music by composers whorepresented the current contemporary new musicscene:

• Pierre Boulez (FR)• Arvo Pärt (EE)• Valentin Silvestrov (UA)• Max Richter (UK)• Gavin Bryars (UK)

In addition, we were proud to present as our guestartists the world-renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Theirparticipation at our Festival reinforced our positionas a world-class event that features criticallyacclaimed artists.

This year, we continued our new Pop Nuit seriesthat consisted of two post-concert performances byartists from the pop/rock genre. Curator MattSchellenberg successfully brought together acollection of artists whose music explores theboundaries between pop and experimentalism:Colin Stetson, Venetian Snares, Mahogany Frog, and Hannah Epperson. The music they presentedrepresented the latest developments andexperiments being made today from within theirmusical sphere. Being that this new series washighly successful with the local youths, we heldthese events at larger venues this year that caters tothis demographic of audience while expanding itsmarketing campaign. The two concerts were soldout and brought in a record-number of listeners.

Thus, our Festival had created many opportunitiesfor our local artists whose artistic practice liebeyond musical categorizations. In other words, wehad brought cutting edge artistic developments toour receptive audience while serving the needs of

2014 NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL (CONT.)

the artists, which thereby nurtures thehealth of our creative community. Thisis one of the fundamental ways ofensuring the growth of our musicalculture.

In addition, we have maintained ourcommitment to our outreach programs. One of our mandates is to showcasemany of these ensembles at our NewMusic Festival by way of performanceopportunities. They play an importantcomponent to our event and havealways added to the Festival experiencewhile enriching our local music scene. This year we were proud to feature aconcert that showcased many of thestudent and local wind ensembles.Ensembles featured were: the BrandonUniversity New Music Ensemble, TheUniversity of Manitoba WindEnsemble, The University of ManitobaFlute Ensemble, and The WinnipegWind Ensemble. As a result, ouroutreach events were all very successfuland had brought in a large number ofaudiences and participating artists.

In conclusion, this year’s NMFprogramming pushed the creativeboundaries further than ever before.By committing ourselves to a themethat highlights artists and music thatlie beyond the concert classical realm,we successfully maintained our“thinking-outside-of-the-box” philosophy, whichhas been the foundation of our creative process. Thus, we brought in many new audiences whilecontinuing our role as a voice for the Canadianand international music community.
