THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The 2017-2018 year has seen the organisation face some challenges at Board level. Whilst this was a regrettable distraction
for the Board the primary objectives to grow the sport, support clubs and facilities by delivering competition services and
events to benefit Diving Victoria’s members and all Victorian divers remained a focus.
During this period there were several changes to the Board composition. Fiona Carter resigned May of 2018 after first joining
the Board in March 2013 and being elected as President in January 2014. Fiona served as President for the remainder of her
terms on the Board. There were many highlights throughout this time, including her being awarded a Women’s Leadership in
Sport grant from the Australian Sports Commission. Fiona is a highly regarded FINA and Diving Australia Technical Official
having represented Australia at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and we look forward to her continued experience
poolside.
Other Board members finishing their appointment on the Diving Victoria Board during this time were Jonathan Madgwick,
Treasurer and member of the finance/risk and audit committee, Jenny Donnet a four time Olympian and Whitehorse Diving
Head Coach, Geoffrey Gedge who spent time as both Vice President and Treasurer and Moira Moss-Simic who proposed and
chaired the dry-land sub-committee. I would like to thank all these board members for their contributions in volunteering
their time for the association.
Diving, like many sports, acknowledges the challenges in growing our sport. There are other sports competing for participants
and our limited facilities continue to restrict our desired outcomes. Our participation numbers are steady and have been
maintained over the past 12 months. However, there has been a significant increase in overall membership numbers from
473 in 2016/17 to 803 in 2017/18. This was based on the restructuring of membership which saw the inclusion of
participation divers and volunteer members that were previously active but not included in our overall membership numbers.
Some activities that occurred in 2017-18 that deserve special mention include:
• The hosting of 2018 Age Nationals from 25-29 April at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). There were
168 entrants including team DuDive from Dubai. Victoria had the largest representation of divers with a team of 74.
• The Diving Victoria Age Team’s success at Age Nationals in April. Once again, Victoria was awarded State of the Year,
based on the results of our divers at the event. Ringwood Diving Club won Club of the Year and a Club Achievement
Award. Elizabeth Howard from St Kevin’s Aquatic Club was the worthy recipient of Coach of the Year, tying with Sue
Milford. Victorian divers won seven out of 10 Age categories ‘Diver of the Year’ awards. This was a fantastic result
and congratulations to all.
• The appointment of Andy Banks to the position of National Coach, Melbourne Performance Pillar. Andy brings to Melbourne extensive diving experience having coached in Britain for over 30 years with career highlights including coaching at three Olympic Games, coaching Olympic Bronze medallist and World Champion Tom Daley, and small screen fame, being a judge on the TV series Splash!
• One of the highlights of the year was having three Victorians compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast. This was a great success with Anabelle Smith, James Connor and Anna-Rose Keating all competing and James coming away with a Silver medal on the 1m springboard. Andy Banks attended as a National coach and Fiona Carter, Helen Hillard, Paul Beech, Helen Sist and Bianca South were all selected as technical officials for the event.
• Annabelle Smith, James Connor and Anna-Rose Keating were also selected to the Australian team for the 2018 World Cup held in Wuhan, China with Annabelle Smith winning a bronze medal in the Women’s 3m synchro.
• Victoria was also represented internationally by Whitehorse diver Laura Cosgrove at the 2017 FINA World Masters Championships held in Budapest.

• A Dryland sub-committee was established, and work commenced on a proposal to go to government for a new $12M Dryland facility.
• A Nominations committee was created for the selection of Board members, comprising of Paul Beech, Bernie Nolan and Alexandra Ash (Product and program manager, YMCA Victoria and Chair of Disability Sport and Recreation).
I am thankful to all Diving Victoria’s amazing volunteers, administrators, coaches and officials. You are the lifeblood of diving
in Victoria and do so much to support our people while ensuring the future of our sport. I would also like to say a special
thank you to the hard working Diving Victoria staff for their ongoing efforts for the association.
Our gratitude is also extended to our corporate and government partners for their ongoing assistance in growing our sport: Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre (SSCT), Aquanation (Maroondah City Council), Sport and Recreation Victoria, VicHealth, VicSport, the Victorian Institute of Sport, Diving Australia, and Bendigo Bank Ringwood.

SPORT DEVELOPMENT AND PARTICIPATION Officiating
The 2017/2018 diving season was a busy period for the core volunteer officials that donate their time to ensure the
continued provision of Diving Victoria events. Thank you to all those hard-working volunteers and a reminder to all
our members that any assistance is welcomed as our events would not be possible without the ongoing commitment
of our officials and volunteers.
Competitions
Competitions continue to comprise a large part of the diving activities in Victoria. Catering to every level of
competitor from novice to elite our events continue to grow. This year culminated with Victoria co-hosting the
Australian Age Diving Championships with Diving Australia in April.
20 divers were awarded with Grand Prix awards for their overall participation throughout the season, whilst a huge
thank you is extended to all the officials and volunteers who helped make the 2017-18 competition season a
resounding success.
Pennant Series
Our Pennant series continues to be a popular event across all levels of divers. 162 different individuals competed
this season with 60 of them being brand new this year. Divers compete according to ability and not age, therefore
giving everyone the chance to progress through the levels. Pennant also provided several opportunities for our
newer judges and officials to gain valuable mentored experience.
School Competitions
Diving Victoria worked in partnership with Girls Sport Victoria, School Sport Victoria, Associated Public Schools and
the Catholic Secondary Sports Association. Diving Victoria staff continue to work with the respective school
organisations to continually improve their events.
Partnership with School Sport Victoria saw over 100 divers compete in the regional and state competition with a
diving clinic offered for those new and inexperienced divers.
Victorian Age Championships
With 174 event registrations, 82 competitors vied for 42 gold medals in the Victorian Age Championships. 126
national qualifying scores were achieved.
Victorian Open Championships
Over the course of the weekend 15 qualifying scores for Nationals were recorded across 18 competing divers. 12
Gold medals were awarded to a highly talented group of athletes.
Victorian Elite Junior Championships
38 competitors challenged for 25 gold medals in the Victorian Elite Junior Championships. With 29 qualifying scores
achieved Victoria shows it’s depth of talent.

Diving For All
The group of programs that make up Diving For All (DFA) continued to be a vital part of Diving Victoria core business.
The DFA programs also provide a training pathway for trainee coaches to complete their practical training.
The following programs fall under the DFA umbrella:
Dive School
The DFA Dive School at MSAC offers classes six days per week. This year saw the introduction of a new skills
based progression introduced by national coach Andy Banks. It has a very clear structure where divers enter
classes at beginner level and move through the skills to intermediate and advanced levels and then prepare for
competition.
Lil’ Rippers
This holiday program continues to thrive at MSAC during school holidays. Divers of all levels can attend either
an hour and a half or a three-hour session on weekdays. 17-18 saw over 550 divers attend. This inclusive
program is designed to introduce divers to the sport and the full-term program.
Come ‘n Try
The ‘Come ‘n Try’ option seeks an outcome whereby divers either enrol in diving classes with Dive School or
with clubs.
Let ‘er Rip
Targeting Primary aged students, the program aims to expose diving to all abilities and backgrounds. Delivered
by skilled Victorian coaches there was one very successful Let er Rip program offered this year.
Schools and other coaching
Diving Victoria has continued to implement a
schools involvement program. This program
has continued this year with schools looking for
high quality programming. Diving Victoria
provided multiple coaching sessions for 9
schools, with these programs growing the
participation of school-age children in the
sport.
