Unnayan organised a two day exposure visit toBaliguda to see the different livelihoodprogrammes undertaken by PRADAN. Of specialinterest were the Siali Leaf co-operative and thegoatary co-operative, to study their organizationalstructure and system and learn from their successand failures and to also see their agriculture andwatershed programmes.

For the first time tribals are beingencouraged by PRADAN to followscientific agricultural practices. This is to ensure a regular income for themand to wean them from dependency on theforest for their livelihood.

Exposure Visit to Baliguda, Kandhamal district :By using minimal water through dripirrigation the farmers are able to produce animpressive amount of seasonal vegetables.

Water harvesting related to this agriculture is theresult of efforts made by PRADAN to harvestwater;1. A regular flow of water to households is

ensured by using gravity where possible.2. By water from minor springs of ponds for

flat and level areas this is done.Unnati Path Goat Co-operative, Jargi : Byinteracting with members of Unnati Path Co-operative.We realised that they have been able toachieve a high standard in improved animalmanagement through local Para vet trained byPRADAN regularly over intervals of three months. The Para vet handle all three aspects preventive, protective and curative health of goats. Until 2010 Basanti Hansda lived the life of atypical poor tribal woman of Mayurbhanj, a districtin the eastern Indian state of Odisha. Madhuria, her village, consists of about sixty families mostof whom are either landless or with small plots ofland. Basanti's is a joint family of fifteen memberswhich includes her elderly in laws and her fiveyear old son. Life was a struggle for this largefamily whose main source of income was the dailywages that could be earned from agriculturallabour which is periodic and seasonal. To augmentthis income Basanti collected and sold sal leavesfrom the nearby forest. In 2010 Basanti became a member of the JaharaySelf Help Group and joined Heifer India's TribalEmpowerment Through Sustainable LivelihoodProgramme. Two years into the programme it is apleasure to visit Basanti in her well maintained, clean Santhali style mud house and meet thepoised, self confident, committed and forwardlooking person she has become. The homeenvironment speaks volumes about Basanti'sability to understand, absorb and put into practiceall the training she has received so far. With the three goats that she received from Heifershe has already passed on one female goat to thepass on family. She now has two male kids fromthe sale of which she will earn around six thousandrupees. She has planned to buy and pass on two

more female goats to the pass on family. For betteranimal management she has built strong bambooplatforms for the goats. These platforms have nowbecome a model for the rest of the community. When one thinks of sustainability one can onlymarvel at what Basanti has been able to achievewith the Rs 3000/- loan that she took from theSHG. With Rs 1000/- she bought a pig. Now shehas ten piglets each of which will fetch her Rs1000/-. She bought four hens for Rs 500/-. Notonly has she earned Rs 2500/- from her poultrybut she also "loaned" four hens to four differentneedy families with the condition that when theyget an income from it they would repay her loanby returning her a hen. She has already got backher four hens . She also invested Rs 1500/- inagriculture.Apart from her thrust on income generation,Basanti has focused on nutrition for her family. Her kitchen garden is a sight for sore eyes with avariety of vegetable plants including drumstick, brinjal, papaya, colocosia, kunduri, banana, ladiesfinger and green chilies. She has also plantedlemon and mango in her backyard. Santhal tribalsare not particularly fond of vegetables and it is anachievement of sorts for Basanti to introduce freshgreen vegetables in their daily diet. With her own success with the kitchen gardenBasanti has been creating awareness in thecommunity about the need for fresh vegetables inthe diet and how, with a little effort , it can beproduced in a small patch. However, Basanti's

activities are not confined to her own home andfamily. She is truly a role model for thecommunity participatingregularly as she does inthe village cleanlinessdrive. She has also beentaking a lead role instaging small playsbased on the Heifercornerstones.

Under her guidance and persistent effort allchildren from the village are now attending thepre school centre and regular school. Impressedwith her community involvement, her sincerity andresult oriented approach she has been selected tobe a community health worker to provide healthcare services to the village, particularly pregnantwomen and young mothers. Mayurbhanj being aMalaria prone area Basanti has been workingrelentlessly to create awareness about Malaria anddengue , particularly about keeping thesurroundings clean and using mosquito nets.
