: Recently, we did such

experiment on the salinity

tolerance limits of five

varieties of traditional

varieties of paddy.

We expect also to provide the scope of running small experiments to Scientist from

distance by the trained Rural boys & girls.

The plan is to provide facilities for all age groups so as to fulfill their needs, basic

education, understanding laws & principles of Science subjects; water and soil analyses

for agriculture, pisciculture, etc. Aunnesha, a Class XI student from Boston, has already

supplied us a Conductivity Meter for salt analysis of soil.

The science activities are to be planned in three separate phases.

For students in class V and VI experiments or activities which yield quick results should

be incorporated. That is activities which yield results instantly in the classroom or in the

lab but involves scientific techniques.

For class VII to IX activities which involves practical experimentation and some

calculations to get the desired result.

Page 8: New CONSOLIDATED ACTIVITY REPORTpupaamargram.org/PDF/ACTIVITY SUMMARY, 2020.pdf · 2020. 2. 3. · CONSOLIDATED ACTIVITY REPORT Of PARIBESH UNNAYAN PARISHAD Present Address 8/1B,

For classes XI and XII experiments spread over a period of time and with emphasis on

experimental designing may be conceived. According to experts, lower class students

are less focused on the scientific process and more attracted by experimental results,

very much like magic. But senior students are more focused on the process .

D. GREEN SCHOOL (GREEN SCHOOL MEET. 17.12.18)

What is Green School: Green School concept was conceived first in Europe in1990, and duly

recognised at Rio Earth Summit (1992) considering the need of taking Actions in 'every area in which

human impacts on the Environment' and subsequently shifted to education about the environment for

sustainability. This can be achieved only through enabling the children to use appropriate knowledge &

skills to take necessary actions on environmental, economic & social issues for a better quality of life.

Therefore, educational Institutes are the places where this type of programmes are conducted.

Green School programme was initiated in

the month of September, 17 at Santoshpur

Rishi Aurobinda Ashrama Vidyalaya,

Santoshpur. Classroom activities and

outdoor visit were arranged for the

selected students of the school.

GREEN SCHOOL AWARD was presented

to the school in the month of December,17

during their Annual function on 11

January,18.

FIELD TRIP

An outdoor trip ws arranged to Khudirabad area

near Mukundupur on 04.02.2018 in connection with

Green school programme was inaugurated on 6th February,

2018 at Chowringee Free Primary School, with the objectives of

conducting year-long hands-on- activities on Biodivesrsity

conservation, waste management, water conservation,

observation of various environment days. PUPA provided

mentoring support to the school for organising their

International Eco-School Programme (GO GREEN GO CLEAN).

GREEN SCHOOL MEET was arranged at Sundarban

Janakalyan Sangha Vidyaniketan on 27.12.18 with support

from Krishna Suchitra Memorial Centre for Rural

development & Research.

Science Camp ( 20.07.19):

Paribesh Unnayan Parishad (PUPA) organised a Science Camp in the premises

of Sundarban Janakalyan Sangha Vidyaniketan (H.S) , at Sagar Island on 20th July,2019

with the support from Department of Science & Technology (DST,WB).

The objective of the camp is to develop scientific thinking through project-based learning in

middle and high school (grades 5-10), and also in primary level. It is believed that though

technique and information are critical to learning the sciences, creativity is just as important

and should be cultivated in children from a young age. The process of experimentation,

asking questions, and learning from both surprising and expected results should be integrated

into School's science education, especially in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry,

Environmental subject, Project-based learning is a prime example of a method that allows

students to experience and grow their reasoning abilities.

More than 100 students (including girls & boys of class IV to XI) from 10 local schools with

18 teachers actively participated in the day-long science camp.

The students are divided in groups (WATER, WASTES & BIODIVERSITY), groups with

their guide teachers .They were explained how to write a good science project report on a

particular topic successfully by Mrs. Rinku Das (A.T. of Physics of a Govt. sponsored School

of Kolkata ). Students were guided to take different projects on different local issues like

conservation of traditional variety of rice , recycling of waste water , rain water harvesting ,

finding the importance of weeds in surrounding area .Students Cleared their the doubts by

the direct interaction with the Dr Amales Misra & Sri Sudipta Bhattacharya.

Following experiments were demonstrated on 21st July,19:

1. Measuring density of water

2.Comparing density of water and oil

3. Producing magnet by magnetic induction

4. Invisible ink using Onion juice

5.Measuring the pH of different solution by universal pH paper

6.Comparing the pH of saliva before and after lunch

7. Reflection and refraction of light using laser torch

8.Electrolysis of water

9.function of electric switch

E) Biodiversity Conservation

. Biodiversity Conservation Park in Farmers' Field at Sagar Island ( support from WBBB);

Biodiversity Conservation Park (a project of the W.B.

Biodiversity Board) 2014-18 : The primary objective is to

promote Food & Nutritional security by bringing back of

traditional local varieties of paddy and vegetable seeds and

Awareness generation for Conservation & Sustainable

utilization of local Agro-bio-resources. This would be

achieved through On-firm conservation of indigenous

biodiversity, by establishing a network of informed local

groups of people.

F) Climate resilient Agriculture

Conservation of more than 100 varieties of traditional Paddy varieties at Sagar island

(including 15 Salt tolerant varieties);

‘Conservation of local Agro-Biodiversity for better livelihoods through the use of local resources

in response to poor areas of Sunderbans’

(GEF/UNDP/SGP/CEE) (2014-16).

The

the

task of identifying, collecting and distributing salt tolerant

varieties of paddy seeds (Hangra, Nona Dhdheswar, Nona

Malabati, Talmugur, nona Bokra, Kerala Sundari, etc.)

among the small and marginal farmers whose lands were

affected by saline water intrusion at Sagar &

Patharpratima Blocks. The result was miraculous in terms

of significant growth in productivity (increase was more

than 500-1000 kg/hectre) which ensured the subsistence farmers a square meal a day throughout the year.

The farmers were also provided with training on Farming with high organic inputs. The project was

also able to identify the salt tolerant capacities of the different paddy seeds. It was also necessary to

create a stock or seed reserve of these rare varieties (SEED BANK) of traditional seeds so that more and

more farmers could be reached. It was achieved through designing a cost benefit sharing model which

has been implemented for keeping the project sustainable. We started with nearly 300 small farmers in

2014 and was able to extend the facility to more than 800 farmers at the end of the second year(2016).

"The 2014 tidal floods increased the salinity of agricultural

land. High-yield rice varieties can only be cultivated after the

monsoon season, when the rains decrease salinity. One local

NGO, Paribesh Unnayan Parishad, is currently developing

a seed bank of indigenous and saline-resistant rice varieties,

and training farmers in their cultivation. Demonstration plots

are used to introduce new techniques by example".
