President's Report 1995

I take great pleasure in presenting for your adoption the President's Report for the 1995 season.

The consolidation of the Newcastle Australian Football League continued throughout 1995 with the emphasis on junior development continuing. In the latter part of the season we were able to appoint, together with the Central Coast Australian Football League, a full time Junior Development Manager shared between both regions. This was a very important move; as it allows us to concentrate on the introduction of Australian Football into primary and secondary schools and the development of both football skills while at a young age and football competition between the schools. The Junior Development Manager is Mr. Alan Waud and he has the job of liaising, arranging clinics and managing the development of junior football within the schools. It is the responsibility of each club within the NAFL to provide skilled personnel (players) to conduct these clinics; to obtain names and addresses of youth involved in the clinics and to entice them to come and play in the club's teams at weekends.

It is very important that all clubs foster juniors for in the 1996 season Each club must have a minimum number Under 17 and Under 14 players each week or the club will lose competition points in other grades, (see Under 17 and Under 14 Competition Rules). It may be necessary to make these rules tougher in 1996 and penalise senior teams within a club if all clubs do not field both Under 17 and Under 14 years teams. Note: The Sydney competition introduced a rule in 1995, similar to the one that the NAFL had in 1994, of penalising all senior teams in a club if the club failed to field all junior as required. The CCAFL is also considering introducing this rule in 1996.

I must at this time congratulate Alan White for the effort and organisation he has put into the Juniors in 1995. Together with his "Band of Helpers", he continued the basis for a good Junior competition. My thanks also go to Barbara Grant, Greg Allen, David Manson, John McLeod, Steve Wilmott and John McKeown. Keep up the good work in 1996 especially with Auskick for younger children. I also think that both the clubs and the Junior

Management Committee should consider an Under 12 competition together with a "Nine-a-Side" competition that has been introduced into the schools in NSW. It is being played in schools in Queensland and New Zealand. A copy of the rules is available through the Executive Officer, Heather Clark.

The present NAFL Constitution is now, in a number of areas, in conflict with the Incorporation Act. Mr. Paul Trisely, a solicitor, who is heavily involved with "Sport and the Law" is consulting with the NAFL with the view of updating the Constitution. After the completion of this process, a full copy of the proposed changes will be forwarded to each club for consideration. As required by our present Constitution we will then call a Special Meeting, after 28 days, to consider and adopt any or all of the proposed changes.

The Hunter Regional Board, which controls both the NAFL and the CCAFL, continues to develop. In 1996 the NAFL is to play an inaugural competition with the CCAFL clubs, for the Hunter Regional Cup. This competition will involve all of the clubs in both the NAFL and the CCAFL and will include First Grade, Reserve Grade, Under 17 and Under 14 teams over a period of six weeks commencing on Saturday 30 March, 1996. The winner of this competition will be decided by the number of games won and percentage. There will no finals played to decide winners. A Club Championship will also be held with two (2) points awarded for each game won in all grades. It is also proposed that there be a financial reward for the top teams in first grade, the amount hasn't been finalised yet, as it depends on sponsorship gained. On the Saturday 5 May 1995, this competition concludes. Club football will not be played on Saturday 11 May, as the Newcastle Black Diamonds will play Central Coast at Central Coast in the 1996 Country Championship round. It should also be noted that it is proposed that the CUB Challenge Cup will be played on Saturday 20 July, 1996, between the Central Coast and Newcastle at a Central Coast venue. It is ve1y important to the NAFL that we pick the best representative team available and we win both of these games.

The Newcastle Black Diamonds were successful against North Coast, at Coffs Harbour, at the end of June this year but were beaten by Monaro AFL on the Sydney Cricket Ground in July. My congratulations to the players and

coaches for a fine effort. However we cannot rest on our laurels as we need to continue to improve.

We are endeavouring to promote ·a combined Hunter Region Representative team to play against a Sydney Representative team before the NSW State Team is picked in 1996, thus once again allowing our players access into this higher grade competition. To make this a successful operation we need genuine commitment from all our players to put pressure on players selected in the "Black Diamonds" and ensure that the best available team is selected to represent the NAFL. (Refer NAFL Constitution Rule 6.19 page 26.)

Attached to this report is a survey of which was carried out into the financial cost of a person/player belonging to each of the NAFL affiliated clubs. We would appreciate it if you could correct and update this information.

Also attached is a resume of our new Life Member Mr. Ross Walters who will be presented with his Life Membership Badge at tonight's meeting. I would like to offer my congratulations to Ross for achieving this award and hope that he will continue to be associated with the NAFL and/or its clubs for many years to come.'

On a sadder note I mention the passing of two long servicing members of this League. They both spent a large amount of time and effort as both players and officials. They were Mr. Merv Williams, who was involved with the Mayfield and Maitland Australian Football Clubs, and Mr. Reg Clarke who was involved with the Waratah AFC. The· NAFL Board expresses its sympathy to the families and wishes to thank these members for their contribution.

My congratulations to the following: Newcastle AFC on winning the Black Diamond Cup and Black Diamond Shield as First Grade Premiers Wallsend AFC on winning the Waratah-Mayfield RSL Perpetual Trophy as Reserve Grade Premiers Cardiff on winning the Under 17 Grade competition Western Suburbs on winning the Under 14 Grade competition

Page 7: ANNQ~L REPORT · 2016. 10. 10. · President's Report 1995 I take great pleasure in presenting for your adoption the President's Report for the 1995 season. The consolidation of the

Newcastle City on wmnmg the "Dennis Cooper" Memorial Club Championship. Andrew Thomas (Nelson Bay) on winning the Bill Elliott Medal for First Grade Best and Fairest. Mark Blackbum (Nelson Bay) on winning the Don Geddes Memorial Medal for Reserve Grade Best and Fairest. Tim Healey (Nelson Bay) on winning the Under 17 years Best and Fairest Trophy. Jonathan Bradfield (Western Suburbs) on winning the Under 14 years Best and Fairest Trophy.

It would be very remiss of me not to acknowledge the dedication of the members of the 1995 NAFL Board who have worked very hard this year enabling us to achieve some of our goals in 1995. Each of the Board members has an "area of responsibility" they looked after throughout the year and me would like to thank each of them for their assistance and time and effort that they put into these areas for which they were responsible. These were:

Alan White, Vice-President, responsible for juniors Richard Boyle, Treasurer, responsible for finances Greg Allen, responsible for umpires George Simpson, responsible for publicity John McLeod, responsible for marketing Ian Gray, who is retiring from the Board. He has been responsible for

Representative Teams and Coaches. I hope we can continue to have his support and help in the future and that at some future time he may rejoin the NAFL Board.

In conclusion I would like to wish all of the clubs a successful season in 1996 and look forward to seeing a stronger and more progressive League next year.

Page 8: ANNQ~L REPORT · 2016. 10. 10. · President's Report 1995 I take great pleasure in presenting for your adoption the President's Report for the 1995 season. The consolidation of the

Executive Officer's Report 1995 Seven Clubs made up a successful 1995 NA.FL season. Junior football, after being played on Sunday for a number of years, returned to Saturday morning with Under 14 and Under 17 competitions.

The Lightning Premiership opened the playing season and .Nelson Bay proved themselves to be a fonnidable force when they hosted and won the event. Nelson Bay also figured prominently in the Best And Fairest awards with players Andrew Thomas (First Grade), Mark Blackburne (Reserve Grade) and Tim Healey (Under 17), each pol.ling the highest points from the umpires, in their grades. Jonathan Bradfield from Western Suburbs was the winner in the Under 14 Grade.

The numbers of the umpires improved this year. Most First Grade matches had the benefit of two :field umpires. Boundary um.pires are still in short supply and the clubs have had to supply one or two boundary umpires for some Reserve Grade and junior games. 1b.ree umpires received their accreditation this year.

NA.FL Representative Team, the "Black Diamonds", defeated CCAFL last year and Summerland AFL at Coffs Harbour in June, 1995, earning the honour of playing on the Sydney Cri~ket Ground for the final in July. Unfortunately, the very competitive ACT/Monaro AFL Tea...m outclassed them on the day.

The Central Coast and Newcastle Leagues appointed Alan Waud as their Junior Development Manager. He is working with clubs from both Leagues to take Aussie Rules to many schools in both regions and is achieving excellent results.

The Tribunal was smoothly run by Chairman Peter Hamilton, with able assistance from Gino Adoranti and Martin Trisely. The NA.FL values their provision of a very necessary Of not always popular) service, to the League. Their willingness to give their time and erudition is invaluable.

All the clubs had teams in the flnals, with six clubs fielding a team on Grand Final Day. Newcastle City won the First Grade flag from Warners Bay in a hard fought match played in wet conditions. City also, had the best overall aggregate and is the proud winner of the Chm Championship Trophy. Wallsend was the Premiership team in Reserve Grade; Cardiff, the winner of Under 17 s and Western Suburbs successful in the Under 14 competition.

CCAFL and the NAFL clubs will commence the 1996 season with a six week competition for all grades next year putting some variety into the competition.

The help of all who work so hard to accomplish another successful season is much appreciated. Most clubs have had their Annual General Meetings and a mixture of new and old committee members are preparing to lead their clubs into the 1996 season. Good luck to all! H you need any help, e..'q>lanations or intetpretatlons with the communication between the League and the clubs please contact me. I hope everyone has a pleasant a break and returns next year full of enthusiasm and great football spirit.

Newcastle Junior AFL 1995 Report Junior football in the Newcastle AFL went through more changes and improvements in 1995. We saw the consolidation of two junior competitions in the U/14 and U/17 grades. These competitions were played on Saturday mornings prior to the senior games in the afternoon. This has allowed for more club involvement in their juniors with six out of seven clubs fielding an U/17 team and five out of seven clubs fielding an U/14 team. Difficulties were experienced with clubs not fielding teams and made it quite stressful on all participants trying to maintain interest. We will only call it a total success when all clubs have two junior teams playing regularly on a Saturday.

The finals series provided some of the most fantastic games of junior football played in Newcastle for many years. Our standard is certainly improving. Congratulations to Western Suburbs winning the Under 14 competition and Cardiff winning the Under 17 competition. To all other competitors, well done.

Much of the improvement in our players has been due to the opportunities for many of them to compete in representative games of the highest order. Our boys have played at Wagga, Sydney, the Central Coast, Perth and during the upcoming Grand Final week in Melbourne. Special mention to Damien Allen and Daniel Grant for winning NSW state schoolboy team selection. Others to do very well with representative honours were Lee Williams, Jonathan Bradfield and Ben Hodges. Many more boys made the Hunter Region representative team. Isn't that great?

Our Auskick program is being run by several clubs for all interested five to eleven boys and girls. The U/11 s played on the SCG during the Swans v Richmond game earlier this year and had a most enjoyable day. Has your club started the Auskick program yet?

With the appointment of Alan Waud from the Central Coast as the first development for the Hunter Region, we will see further improvements in the junior league. Alan has already made progress in the Newcastle Primary Schools and we wish him and our club representatives all the very best. The Hunter RHgion has requested from the NSW development board that this position be made a permanent appointment in 1996.

To conclude I would like to pass on one particular observation I have made this year. It has been noticeable that the clubs who have totally embraced the concept of junior football are receiving benefits beyond their expectations. What is happening is the parents of the junior footballers have become active members of the football club they have joined. They have become publicity officers, League delegates, active committee people, coaches , umpires and above all, have become keen supporters of their son's club and want that club to become as successful as possible for the sake of their children. And weren't the presentation nights well attended when the junior and senior grades combined on the same evening. So for the remaining clubs who have yet to benefit from a fully developed junior programme, keep going please, the rewards will be there and you won't be left behind.

Alan White - Director, Newcastle Junior AFL

., Publicity Report 1995

League affairs were regularly publicised during 1995 by:

0 David Manson talking to Craig Hamilton on 2NC (All in the Game) Saturday mornings 9.00- 10.00 am

0 Generic Promotions throughout the season (PRIME)

0 Match Previews (Saturday- Newcastle Herald)

0 Short results, brief comments (Sunday - Sun-Herald)

0 Match write-ups, full results (Monday - Sports Herald)

0 TV visuals and scores during the finals series (NBN)

There were also frequent photographs accompanying match reports in The Herald. I would like to express appreciation for the support of the media during the season, and hope we can expand the coverage in 1996.

May I also commend those club officials (or others) who, in the midst of post-match celebrations/post-mortems each Saturday afternoon, were able to keep clear heads and provide me with the information for our publicity. You were an important link ·· in the publicity chain. ·

Finally, I propose the following recommendations for the incoming Board's consideration;

I. That clubs be asked to provide, additionally, final scores as soon as the match is finalised, with a view to having them on Saturday night's television;

2. That all publicity be channelled through the League Publicity Officer to ensure that a "whole-of-League" image is presented to the r~ading public.

·Umpires Director's Report 1995

The 1995 Annual General Meeting marks my first twelve months as a Board Member whose role includes being the Umpires' Director. This year was a year of growth for the NAFL Umpires. The previous Board and Umpires had set in motion the strategies that we were able to continue developing during the season. These plans included a recruiting program for all umpires, improvements to the remuneration system for Umpires and support for training programs.

Due to an increase in numbers, Mr. Bill Clarke, who has acted as U1npires' Coordinator for the past four years, was able to share the workload that he has carried most of that time. Season 1995 saw U1npires meeting regularly, with Demlis Thurlow (Secretary), Neville Turner (Treasurer), Bill Clarke and John Asbury (Committee), ensuring the season ran smoothly. Congratulations must go to John Sullivan, Bill Clarke and Neville Turner, for their fine effort as the Umpires' selection panel for the season.

Bill also ran Umpires' training and accreditation programs. Although eleven Umpires registered for accreditation, only three completed the full program this year. Umpires also attended training sessions with , the clubs, when asked, which further enhanced the improved understanding between Umpires and players.

The Umpires have already held their Annual General Meeting and are well into advance planning for a continual improvement of skills and image. The development of strategies of 1995 will continue so that in 1996 and beyond the NAFL has high quality and consistent Umpiring.

Newcastle's 1995 Representative season was a verv successful campaign indeed.

After securing our first CUB Challenge against the Central Coast in f'.h:Jv, we also tasted success in the Northern NSW Countrv Championship against Summerland Afl at (offs Harbour's fantastic new complex.

This set up the NSW Counb\J Final at the SCG against ACT/Monaro AFL in Julv. Unfortunatelv, in what I hope is their first and last appearance in the Championships, thev proved too strong, resulting in the lowering of our colours.

Evervone involved experienced a great year. ~ thanks to Aussell f'.h:Jcev, Simon Denham, David f'.h:Jnson, Dave Metcalfe, Pat White, Simon Hunt and Kevin Rvan for their assistance with the squad and selections. Special thanks also go to Heather Clark and Ian Grav from the NAFL for all their help during the campaign.

The '95 campaign also showed such traits as pride, team spirit and enthusiasm that will toke Newcastle to the top in the future, if thev continue. Thanks fellas for a great effort. We assembled a fantastic side of the best standard I have seen for monv vears.

To ensure our continued performance at this level I would like to make the following suggestions:

1 . All clubs to encourage plovers to represent. 2. All plovers to strive to represent. 3. No NAFL round on Rep weekends. 4. Continued NAFL support and recognition as in '95.

Yours in Sport Darren Gilmour
