The oldest of three siblings, Fabiola Forste was born in Lima, Peru, and spent the first 27 years of her life there. Fabiola had a very happy childhood, surrounded by lots and lots of family from different parts of Peru. Her father was retired from his job in the Marines and her Mom stayed at home to take care of the kids.

Fabiola finished high school at 16 since Peruvian students graduate from high schools after 11 years in the educational system as opposed to the 12 years in the United States.

She needed training to earn money to pay for college, so she decided to attend a two-year, secretarial school. She paid for the first two months of school. After that she was offered a work-study scholarship. She worked as a secretary for the school in return for her tuition.

When she completed her secretarial training at age 18, the school’s director introduced her to a local bank manager who hired her. After the bank she worked at two companies. The latter required her to learn to speak and write English. For two years she worked and learned grammar, spelling and conversational English at an English institute. “That changed my life,” she said.

Now she was ready to attend college and pursue her dream of a career. She passed the test to enter college and began studying business administration. “I would work to 5, and then go to college from 6 to 10:30,” she said. She completed three years of the five-year college curriculum.

Times in Peru were getting difficult. It wasn’t safe to live in Peru anymore. “That was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” Fabiola said. “I decided to quit my job and take my severance pay to come to America. I left my whole life there for a better life here.”

Fabiola had a friend and an uncle in Virginia. Her uncle helped her get a job in a real estate firm. Her friend got married. At her wedding Fabiola met Eric, who volunteered to help her practice English. That was the good news, but 9/11 happened. “I didn’t expect something like that from America,” Fabiola said. “I took it as a sign that I should go back to Peru.”

However, Eric had another idea. “Let’s get married.” Fabiola decided to take the risk, so nine months after meeting Eric, they were wed. “From 2001 to now …18 years married and 2 beautiful daughters: Camilla (15) and Katey (14).

While improving her English, Fabiola was also building a career. From the real estate firm to a mortgage company, she worked her way up from secretary to loan officer assistant, loan processor, and finally loan officer. She continued to work after her two daughters were born.

One day, she and Eric faced questions often posed by young families: “Why are we always rushing? Is money that important?” The two sat down and talked about their budget, deciding that if they cut daycare and restaurant dinners, one of them could stay home.

In 2008 Fabiola decided being a mother would become her job. Her father also became sick and died in June of that year. Fabiola went to Peru twice to help out.

While Fabiola enjoyed setting up play dates for her daughters, she was also going a little crazy from staying at home, so she began going to the gym. She began taking a Zumba class which was taught by a Peruvian instructor. Her instructor became her mentor, helping her with training and auditions to become a fitness instructor. In 2009 she became certified to teach Zumba and began teaching classes for the department of recreation and parks in Virginia.

A “Not So Senior Moment” By Martha Thorn

Page 5 Annapolis Senior Activity Center

“Since then I’ve been teaching 10 years non-stop,” she said. She’s also certified to teach weight training, water aerobics and aerobics.

In 2012 the couple moved from Virginia to Maryland so that Eric could be closer to his mom who lived in Arnold.

As soon as they moved to Maryland Fabiola began teaching one Zumba class at Anne Arundel Community College. In 2013 she was asked to teach one class – an 8:30 aerobics class on Wednesdays – at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center. Since it was her first time teaching seniors, she didn’t know what to expect. She soon learned that if she did dance steps, they would follow her. “They became my inspiration,” she said of the seniors.

Center members range from age 55 to over 100. Fabiola’s students mostly range from age 60 to over 96. “Some of them work out for two to three hours,” she said. “They’re in excellent shape. They may go to the hospital for surgeries, but they come back even stronger. Don’t ever underestimate my seniors.” Now she’s teaching 12 classes – some in Annapolis and some at the Arnold Senior Activity Center.

Fabiola’s parents are now dead, and her uncle retired and moved back to Peru. Fabiola misses her extended family (her paternal grandparents had 12 children and her maternal grandfather had three wives and 20 children), but the seniors serve as surrogates for the aunts and uncles. “They’re like family,” she says.

When she first began exercising, it was for her health. Now it’s become her passion. “It’s like I’m paid to have fun,” she says. She searches for the right music so the seniors can sing along with it. “Some seniors come to class because they’re lonely or their doctors have told them to work out or they’re depressed,” Fabiola says. “Now they’re singing along with the music and having fun.”

Knowing that she’s having such an important impact on their lives, she takes her job very seriously and is committed to doing it right. “I dreamed of being a salsa dancer when I was a little girl,” Fabiola says, “and for a while I did ballroom dancing and danced with a professional dance troupe in competitions, but the shoes and the costumes were very expensive, so I didn’t do it for very long.”

Sometimes she still thinks of those dreams … to be a dancer, to finish college and pursue a career, but then

she thinks, “Who’s going to pay me to have the fun that I do now? I only have this one life. I’ve got to make

the most of it.”
