A âNot So Senior Momentâ By Martha Thorn
Imelda Magana-Martinez was born and raised in Mexico. As is the custom there, her last name is composed of her fatherâs last name -- Magana â and her motherâs last name -- Martinez. Now in her late 70s, her Mexican name is Imelda Magana-Martinez, Widow of Cruz.
Imelda was the oldest girl of nine children -- four girls and five boys. She lived in Penjamo, Guanajuato, with Penjamo being a Mexican city, and Guanajuato, a state. Called Magallanes, her community of about 1,000 people got its name from her fatherâs family (Magana).
Her family was well-to-do. They owned cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, horses and donkeys. Imelda told a story of families riding donkeys to a wedding in a neighboring town. âThere were about 30 of us riding donkeys,â she said.
Her family was self-sufficient. They made corrals of wood and rocks piled about three-feet high. They made their own furniture. In one âgreatâ room they had a table âas long as a treeâ where many families gathered for meals. Families often ate with other families and often arrived unannounced, according to Imelda.
They grew beans, corn, herbs, tea leaves, and fruit trees, including avocados, mangos, limes, guava (guayaba) and cherimoyas (chirimoyas). Tortillas and salsa were a staple -- eaten Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch. They didnât drink cowâs milk, which was used to make cheese. Instead, they drank tea and coffee with their meals. Tequila, which was made from cactus leaves, was reserved for weekends and special occasions, as was meat, which included goat and pork dishes.
Cooking was very labor intensive. They didnât have stoves. Instead, they cooked outside. A clay pot was placed in a pit filled with rocks and wood, surrounded by leaves. Some clay pots were huge, holding as much as 13 to 15 gallons.
To make tortillas from scratch to feed a family and all their guests took two days. First, the corn would be fetched from a storage room. After husking, it would be cooked all day and left to sit all night. At 6 a.m. the next day, the corn would be rinsed and rolled between two stones. One stone resembled a rolling pin. The other was flat and shaped like a cutting board. The women took the doughy mixture out of a five gallon bucket a little at a time and patted it into tortillas to cook. Meanwhile, beans and salsa were boiling over the fire. Imeldaâs mother took fruit to bigger towns where she would either sell it for money or barter it for things like clay pots and coffee.
Her father was a sculptor, who worked with natural stone. People brought him drawings, and he would make sculptures from them. Imelda says her dadâs sculptures can be seen in churches throughout Mexico.
When Imelda was 11 years old her father was offered a job to work with other artists on the Diana Cazadora statue on Reforma Street in Mexico City. The family moved to Mexico City where he would help create âone of the most distinctive statuesâ in Mexico City.
Imelda was 17 when she was introduced to Esteban Cruz at a party at her auntâs house. The two fell in love and were married a year later.
Page 5 Annapolis Senior Activity Center
Imeldaâs parents werenât happy about the match. They felt he was too old for her (he was 29, she was 18). They were also concerned because he was poor.
They neednât have worried. Esteban and his four brothers started a construction company that built highways throughout Mexico. The company succeeded and the young couple prospered.
Imelda had 10 pregnancies but she lost two children during childbirth. Eight survived. The oldest was a boy, âthe king of the family.â Seven were girls.
Her husband was away from home for months at a time as he worked on construction projects, but whenever he finished a big project he would take a month vacation. The older children rode on âbig construction machinesâ as the family headed from their home in Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende (a city in the state of Guanajuato). Imeldaâs husband and his brothers had built a hacienda there, and once a year they would throw a big party there.
Imeldaâs children consider San Miguel de Allende their hometown because they spent so many happy times there. As her children grew up, one after another left Mexico for America because of the job opportunities.
The first of her daughters moved to the United States in 1988 but Imelda didnât make her first visit until 1997 when her daughter, Susana âSuzyâ Cruz, needed help after the birth of her son, Tony. Imelda helped her for five months before returning to Mexico.
After her initial visit 22 years ago, Imelda began visiting yearly, staying about five months each time. âItâs not as cold there during the winter,â she explains. She also still has one daughter, two brothers, two sisters, and many friends there.
About five years ago Imelda began attending the Annapolis Senior Activity Center. âIt was one of the happiest moments of my life,â Imelda said. She loved the activities, the music, and making new friends.
At the center, she crochets and knits Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays with her knitting groups. Sheâs made a tablecloth for every daughter, a blanket for each of her 17 grandchildren, and an abundance of hats and scarves. âSheâs always learning something new,â Suzy says. Imelda usually rents a table at the centerâs flea market where she can sell some of her creations.
Sheâs also made earrings for every daughter with the Jewelry Making Club. She enjoys the Wednesday entertainment, and dresses up for the island party, Halloween and hot dog hoedown. For exercise, she walks around the center and has participated in the Friday chair exercise class.
She practices English with her friends, graduating from simple words like âHelloâ and âGoodbyeâ to phrases like âHave a good weekend.â She calls the center âmy little schoolâ and counts her blessings that she can be here with all her friends.
A couple of years ago, Imelda decided she wanted to become an American citizen. She was given 100 questions to study. In 2019 she took the test. She was asked five or six of the 100 questions. âI donât know how I did it,â she says, âbut I passed.â She became an American citizen on Aug. 27, 2019, in Baltimore.
Imelda loves this country just as much as she loves Mexico. She recognizes the benefits of living here and believes she will be a good citizen, respecting its laws and contributing to make it better.
Whenever she leaves Mexico or the United States, she says, âIâm going to my other country.â
