1 IntroductionThis is the third edition of the Asia Pacific ASL Open tournament, the second being very successfully held in Manila in 2016. We hope the friends you made and the experiences you shared will endure for many years and make you return to future events.

Where: Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia

Welcome in Siem Reap, the city of the Angkor Temples. Cambodia is the Kingdom of Wonders: we hope you will be charmed by its cultural treasures and the kindness of its inhabitants.

Each of the first 4 rounds has 3 scenarios to choose from. More or less, half of them will be ETO and the other half PTO. There will be no DTO. How do I join and what do I get

2 Format and rules

FormatTHURSDAY 27th

To be in Siem Reap will bring you the opportunity to visit the fabulous site of the Angkor Temples. If available (and this is the plan!...), Xavier will tour you among these ancient monuments of the Khmer culture. Don’t expect to learn much about architecture or pre-Angkor Cambodian history, but the visit should give you the opportunity to see most of the different aspects of this fantastic site while walking around several temples and specific areas (and drinking some beers as well).

Seeding & pairing Seeding is based on a Swiss Draw pairing system, with accelerated pairing, but with some flexibility.

An Initial Tournament Ranking (ITR) will be determined based upon a players AREA ranking. The Tournament Director may vary the ranking according to judgment where it is felt that the rankings do not properly reflect a participant’s skill level, or if such participants are usually playing together and would like to change (upon their request). Rankings will be judgmentally applied based upon playing experience for players with no AREA ranking.

In each round, players are seeded according to their current number of tournament points (first) and then their Initial ITR (second). For seeding purposes only, half a point is added to the top half of the draw for the first two rounds.

Pairing is done within each seeding group where possible. A seeding group is defined as where all players have the same number of points. Within each seeding group, the top half is paired to the bottom half, where possible.

No player will play the same opponent twice. We will try not to match players of similar nationality or regular opponents. Players mutually agreeing and with a similar amount of points are welcome to request to be matched up as opponents.

Scenario selection Out of the three scenarios available each player will chose 2: the first one will be the one he wants to play, the second one the scenario played if it doesn’t match with his opponent’s choice. The 3 scenario is just a discarded scenario that the player will be sure NOT to play.

If only one scenario remains (ie you both eliminated a different scenario), the remaining scenario is selected.

If two scenarios remain (ie you both eliminated the same scenario), and you both selected the same number 1’s, you play that scenario. If you have selected different 1’s, the choice is made by random selection between the remaining two scenarios.

Any copies of scenarios provided are for competition use only. The organizers strongly encourage and recommend that you purchase the associated products!

Tournament scenario SSRs ▪For OBA, if two Red chits are drawn as the first two draws, the second Red chit is considered a Black chit and also your final fire mission ▪Upon mutual agreement, players are encouraged to use the IIFT. Otherwise, the IFT will be used.


Bidding and balancing The Australian Bidding System will be used. As follows ▪Each player secretly writes down a preferred side and balance level. A balance selection consists of a side (eg G for German) and a level of handicap from 0 to 3 that you are prepared to accept in order to play that side (eg G1 indicates German, Level 1). Level 0 indicates a preference for a side, but no balance. Each successive selection chosen beyond Level 0 is cumulative

▪If players have chosen different sides; players each get the sides they have bid for with the handicaps they have selected.

▪ If players chose the same side, but different balance levels, the player who has chosen the higher number gets to play the side with the handicap balance. The other player gets the other side with no balance handicap

▪If both players have chosen the same side and balance level, random selection is applied with the winner playing the side with the handicap balance. The other player gets the other side with no balance handicap. ABS handicaps will be listed in the Appendix along with the scenario details.

Tournament Rules The following rules are to be applied:

▪Tournament Scenarios must be completed by the end of the given time. Thus: PLAY FAST!

▪In the event a tournament scenario cannot be concluded within the allowed time, the Tournament Director has sole discretion to declare a winner.

▪Players who are more than 30 minutes late for a tournament round start time may forfeit their match.

▪The Tournament Director is the final arbiter of all rules disputes (including by rolling a die). The Tournament Director may delegate adjudication of rules to others.

▪The Tournament Director may play.

Venue Rules Participants observe the following house rules:

▪The tournament has one smoking room which may be used if players mutually agree. The rest of the venue is a non-smoking environment ;

▪All furniture and fittings must be returned to their original positions at the end of the event ;

▪The organizers are not responsible for participant’s valuables, so mind your stuff;▪The organizers may exclude any participant from the premises for vandalism, disruptive or abusive behavior, or other inappropriate activity (but we all know that ASLers are gentlemen).


EtiquetteThe Tournament Directors suggest the following:

▪Shake hands with your opponent at start and conclusion of each round. Drink a beer as well, at start and at conclusion of each game. Call out your opponent’s SAN;

▪Mobile phones should be set to silent mode. Mobile phone calls should be made outside the tournament room;

▪Advise your opponent if you have previous experience with a scenario. Aim to have play underway within 40 minutes of round start. Agree with your opponent on a reasonable amount of setup time and stick to it. Leave the table during your opponent’s setup ;

▪ Help with setting and packing up. Help out with the marker counters while your opponent is moving/shooting. However, avoid touching your opponent’s units; ask before inspecting a stack or moving units for a LOS check ;

▪ Maintain your personal grooming in the CC of the tournament;

▪ Keep the tournament area tidy. Keep drinks in closed containers and/or off the tournament table!

Awards The Asia Pacific Open ASL organizers will provide prizes/certificates. For each match you play you will score 3 points for winning, 1 point for a draw. Based on total scores, prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Draws in scoring will be resolved in favor of the initially higher-rated player. In addition to awards according to final position, a couple of other prizes will be awarded as follows:

▪H-t-H: Most CVPs inflicted by the player in CC (including vehicles and double for capture)

▪ Sniper: Total CVP of kills, including MC and subsequent MC induced K/, double-breaks, recalled vehicles (value of vehicle including AL if applicable) and wounds (1 CVP per wound if not KIAed by Sniper, one wound/leader max)


3.Logistics

Travel to Siem Reap Many international flights travel to Siem Reap airport (REP).

You can get a visa upon the arrival, or fill a form on the internet and print it at home. For citizens of most countries the visa costs USD 30 and you have to present 2 passport size pictures.

Airport to Venue We recommend that attendees arrive in the morning of Thursday 27 (or earlier). We’ll do our best in order to conclude the tournament early enough so that early departures (from 1800 onwards) will be easily taken.

From the airport to nearly anywhere downtown will take you from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and weather. Siem Reap is tiny ☺

Our local ASL players will be able to pick up some people from the airport until Thursday early afternoon, otherwise you should get a cab.

Getting around The usual way to travel in Siem Reap is the Tuk Tuk. One to four passengers, sometimes even

more, can ride a tuk tuk. The ride will cost generally from 1 to 3 USD $ depending of the distance. Take a name card of your hotel, if the rider doesn’t know its location (and he won’t!), he will call.

You can also drive a Moto-dop, it is cheaper, a bit faster, but not safer… although they usually drive so slowly that there are not really accidents with them. No one will have any extra helmet to give you.

Siem Reap is not a big town, travelling inside is not very difficult.

Security Siem Reap does not really present any problem of security.

As everywhere, keep an eye on your stuff. The room of the tournament will be locked at night and under the responsibility of the hotel security.

MoneyThe currency is Cambodia is the Riel (USD 1.00 = 4000 Riels) but you can pay everything in USD and all prices, when indicated, are in USD. Nevertheless, coins are not used and any change will be given back to you in Riels. ex : you have to pay USD 4.50, you give USD 5.00 and they will give you 2000 Riels back.
