HISTORY OF MISA NG SAMBAYAN 1998- 2001 the Nepomucenos had made it a tradition to invite someone who has no one or no place to spend their thanksgiving at. Her name is Tess Manuel. God rests her soul . She is now a saint in my book. A former mathematician master, now retired, despite her suffer-ing from maculodegeneration, continued her devotion to Our Lady of Antipolo , at the National Shrine in DC. That was where I met her. She is very good friends with Cardinal Keeler . She loved him so that she always visited him on his birthday and when sick at the hospital at one point. She traveled by metrotrain and bus from her condominium in DC to Baltimore sleet , rain or snow . She had called Agnes one day and said that there is a Filipino priest by the name of Rev. Fr. Rene Mangahas in Chester , Maryland serving a small parish. (She knows Agnes belonged to a prayer group and had always dreamed of gathering the kababayans for Holy Mass in Tagalog ). One phone call led to another and the Agnes and Rosita Tamondong met Rev Fr. Rene at his parish. Without any hesitation, this wonderful gifted man of cloth said “YES” to the idea with a contingency that a permission will be granted by the local parish in Severna Park, St. John the Evangelist. The very first Filipino mass was celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church on June 24, 2011 and “ Misa ng Sambayan “was born. He had led the growing Filipino community to the very de-tailed planning from the music to the logistics of the liturgy. He had brought one of the famous composer of the Bukas Palad Jesuit Music Ministry Jandi Arboleda who led us in music and taught our very first guitar player, Dr. Raymundo Caparros. Rev Fr. Rene had said mass every third Sunday of the month for a good 4 years. He had invited Bishop Camilo Gregorio from the Philippines and Fr. Danilo Cipriano from Nueva Ecija too, Rev. Fr. Onet Mangahas , his older brother. He seeked the help of a nun Sr. Vangie Pabalate (who was vacationing to take care of her mother ) , to extend our ministry to not just third Sunday Filipino masses but also to help Filipino families in their search for their babies to be baptized, for their marriage to be under God‟s law, first communion , confirmation among those who practice the Catholic faith. He introduced the prayer group to people who might help us out in carrying the proper altar serving and liturgy. Of course after the Mass there is a fellowship with Filipino food being served. (a Filipino culture) Deacon Dean Lopata who had given the prayer group , Joy in the Spirit of the Lord, Life in the spirit seminar and several talks on charismatic gifts , is our life-line to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic church in Severna Park to this day. He secured our permission from the then parish priest of St. John, Bishop Mitchell Rozanski for the use of the church. He is our liaison to St. John. Rev Fr. PJ Camering was sent by the Lord when Rev Fr Orlan Valino from Nueva Ecija too had asked if the Joy in the Spirit could send an invitation to him so he can come and help us out since Fr. Rene will be assigned to another state. So it happened so easily. The Lord in His loving ways had opened the ways and the bi-ways for Fr. PJ to get here from Rome. He had lovingly served us and had imparted to us more knowledge about the Word of God by simple examples of a Filipino life . He is a very young priest and was always there at your beckon if there is a need for a priest. But the Lord has other plans for him, he was blessed by being accepted as a associate pastor in Washington, DC so his time was restraint but the Lord had someone in line ..another young priest studying canon law at Catholic University was sent our way. Sis Gonette had introduced him to the prayer group. What a joy and great blessing so the third Sunday masses will go on. His name is Rev Fr Jose Opalda serv-ing as an associate pastor in Millersville, Maryland. He gladly accepted and is currently our Presider every third Sunday. This is what the Lord wants and we know it. The ministry is really blessed. All these 10 years JITS had been given holy priests like Monsignor Leo Rotor, a former vatican based secretary to the Papal Nuncio, Rev Fr. Clarito Jundis, who also started the Sanbayan Mass in the northern Baltimore area a few years later, Rev. Fr. Junjun Borres, a Jesuit composer of Bukas Palad , Rev Fr Noel Deslate, now in Chicago, Rev Fr Jumamoy, from Baltimore Rev Fr Martin, a Franciscan , now in the Philippines… and many others. But wait there is one very faithful Redemptorist who had been with the JITS through thick and thin. He had presided over some Filipino masses if we cannot get a Filipino priest at all. His name is Rev Fr Louis Olive. He had concelebrated in all the masses without fail, through the cortesy of Lita and Ted Millan. The very core of this ministry lies in the faithfulness, generosity, kindness and devotion to our Lord of the members of the Joy in the Spirit of the Lord Prayer group . To name some Mamerta Batac (+) and Danny Batac who had been the historian of the prayer group had painstakingly shared their time treasure and talent. Another God-sent, Dr. Myrna Ortega , who had opened wide our horizons by introducing the „Misa ng Sambayan” to all the Filipino organizations. Tita Kenney, very popular pianist from Peabody, had wholeheartedly given her time to direct the choir after Amy Cruz had to leave because of family needs (grandchildren) .Bong and Gigi Sabasa who faithfully attends choir practices and plays the guitar (learned how due to the anointing of the spirit). Carmen , now the Headservant of the JITS and husband Art Sotto is always on top of things . Monica Garzon who in her faithful devotion to Holy Mass had volunteered her 2 children Joy and Edwin to be the first altar servers together with the Jay & Liz Esposito, Ada Corpuz , Joseph Caparros. Anna Manalad, Jonah & Julien Caparros, Lauren Flores, Yrrah Sabasa, Bea Sabasa, Christine & Emily Rose Zaide: some of them are still serving to the present. They are now joined by our new servers Isabella Nguyen, Kayla Tamondong, Gabrielle, Gyla. The ushers are also directed by our Lord because the Fil-Am members lovingly volunteered namely Gigi Sipagan, Edwin Pabalate, Rey Dominguez, Arnel Gregorio, Alfredo Capayas, Val Corpus, Cezar Zaide and many others .The choir members are dedicated people who in their busy schedule had managed to shuffle their time to attend without com-plaint . Like as stated before they are all God-sent . The list grows longer to name a few Bing and Ariel Nayal, Lynn Nguyen, Arlene Rivera , Joanne Manalad, Rudy Tamondong, Myra De Mateo, Michael Macaculop … and many other. Last but not least Iluminada Corpus known as Luming had a gift of friendship and had invited a lot of kababayans to attend. She is an important instrument in the publicity fot the “Misa ng Sambayan” so more Filipinos will attend. These members are like a tapestry woven together by our Lord to put their gifts together as one to evangelize to their kababayans proclaiming the glory of God!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with great joy that I welcome all those attending the 10th anni-

versary celebration of the monthly Filipino Tagalog Mass held at my parish

-- St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park. It is a great honor for St. John to host

this monthly third Sunday liturgical celebration for the entire Baltimore Filipino

community. I am also very grateful for the ongoing invitation from the Filipino

community to personally assist as a deacon at these wonderful liturgical celebra-

tions of Christ’s deep and abiding love for all of his sons and daughters. It is truly

a very special blessing for St. John Parish to have such a faith-filled group of Fili-

pinos worshiping with such love and enthusiasm within their parish walls.

I would also like to thank all of the Filipino priests and deacons who have

participated in this very beautiful Eucharistic liturgy over the first ten years, and I

pray that this most fulfilling gathering involving praise, worship and fellowship

may continue at St. John for many more years to come. I rejoice that God’s family

on this earth is a very large family – including believers from every corner of the

earth. My association and involvement with my Filipino brothers and sisters in the

Archdiocese of Baltimore and beyond has been a rich and life-changing experience

for me – an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything! God is good all the time!

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Peace and joy to all of you! On behalf of the Joy in the Spirit Prayer Group, welcome to the 10th anniver-sary of “Ang Misa Nang Sambayanan.” Peace and thanksgiving to God for blessing us with faithful priests Fr. Rene Mangahas, Father PJ, Father Jojo, Father Literal, and most especially Fr. Olive. They have made the masses for the past ten years possible. We are so grateful to all of them for celebrating the Holy Eucharist in our Native Language (Tagalog) thereby allowing us to observe and practice our faith the Filipino way. We were also able to observe “Simbang Ga-bi” (Advent), “Pabasa” (Lent), and “Flores de Mayo,” just to mention a few practices that are unique Filipino. Our heartfelt thanks to St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park, Maryland for hosting our “Misa ng Sambayanan” in this place we come together every third Sunday of the month as one body in the Spirit of Jesus Christ to celebrate the Holy Eucharist followed by fellowship while sharing a pot luck meal; these gatherings have allowed us to minister through love and service. As we continue our journey of faith further, we invite all of you to keep your eyes open Jesus and pray that we will keep ourselves open to the gifts and guidance of the Holy Spirit to make “Ang Misa Ng Sambayanan” a monthly commitment to God and each other. 10 years ......!!!!!! Wow!! A real milestone granted to us by our

Lord Jesus.He is always with us . He had planned all these to

happen. What a JOY in our Spirit . All the people that helped us

put this monthly Eucharistic celebration are all God -sent.

The Joy in the Spirit is so indebted to all of you. By the power of

the Holy Spirit , we are naming this event an accomplishment by

everyone who faithfully served and attended for the past ten

years. Kudos to all of you.

Rev Fr. Rene Mangahas is the very sole instrument that sparked the fire which

started the Misa ng Sambayan With his "FIAT" the ball rolled . We had babies bap-

tized, weddings, first communicants, confirmation, you name it we are a church.

He introduced us to Tagalog Hesuwita Mass songs and met the composers too,

met Bishop Gregorio, Monsignor Rotor from the Vatican, MCST sisters especially Sr.

Vangie Pabalate. We would also like to thank Fr. PJ Camiring for presiding us after

Fr. Rene had to leave to pursue his studies.

We thank the Lord always for leading us to Fr. Jojo Opalda who willingly help us in

making the Misa ng Samabayanan possible every month through his selfless giv-

ing of his time, wisdom and knowledge.

Special mention to Deacon Dean Lopata , without him we won't even be able to

have a church and he had helped us all the way to get the permission of the

now Bishop Mitchell Rozanski.

Let us not forget our dear faithful loving man of cloth, Rev Fr, Louis Olive, a Re-

demptorist, who in every chance he gets has selflessly offered himself to assist us

in all our road blocks . He is with us every Sunday in our prayer meetings too. Gra-

cias!

We abide by the Holy Spirit for good things happen always! Without Him we are

nothing. God bless all of us and hoping to have another 10 years.God-willing
