BOAT DOCKS

Last summer all 117 docks were rented. In the begin-ning of July 2012, there were two Wolverine docksvacant that have now been filled. The Office managesthe list for our move or wait registry, which is alsoavailable on our Forest Lake website. Please check orchange your status when necessary.

The renovation of docks continued this past winterunder the current DNR permit that expires in 2013. Thenorth half of the “A” docks were renovated with the southportion scheduled for this winter. The docks are widerand longer and make it more pleasant for maneuveringboats in and out. Maintenance was also able to seal thenorth dam and the “C” docks to help the wood lastlonger. Thank You to Gary Schoenherr and F.L. Mainte-nance team for all of the repairs and renovation.

The Board agreed to revise the Boat rental contract toallow the Office to change dock slips within the samedock area when necessary. This is not a commonoccurrence, but in circumstances that solve a tightdockage slip, safety issues, etc. it may be applied. Yourcooperation, as always, is appreciated.

A reminder to all boat renters to check your boat forsecure docking each time you leave the area to limitrocking or possible damage due to daily weatherchanges. Also, please bring any concerns to our atten-tion when repairs are needed in the dock area.

Common courtesy is the best way to enjoy our lake andall the fun it has to offer. Please, REVIEW Boating rules,Be SAFE and continue to ENJOY the remainder of the2012 season!

Director Gary Judson

CAMPGROUND

Rental income was lower this past year largely from thechange in weekly and weekend camping. Revenue wasdown close to $4000. We had 30 seasonal camperslast summer and have registered 30 for this summer. We lost five but gained five. When the economy picksup and gas prices go down, we hope to see an increasein weekend and weekly camping activity.

The bathhouse has had a lot of attention this spring.Maintenance painted, installed new lights and tiled thewomen’s showers, which have made a great improve-ment. Next spring, the sinks and counter top replace-ment in both restrooms are planned along with re-tilingthe men’s showers.

Please review all camping rules and provide your guestswith these. Rules will be enforced. When Securitypersonnel give out a warning, a record is kept on file. Ifthese warnings are not being respected, the Boardconsiders suspensions of camping privileges for theoffender. Our campground is a “Family Oriented” camp-ground and each member has responsibility for them-selves and their registered guests.

If you have small children, please accompany them tothe playground to make sure all equipment is in goodworking order and report the problem to the Office ormaintenance if it is not. Things change with daily useand we need your help to know when play equipmentneeds repair to keep all of our smallest campers safe.

Don't forget, the Campground closes for regular camp-ing with full facilities on October 15th.

Director Gary Judson

Forest Lake Information Paper 6 Summer 2012

TINA AT LARGEShe’s a little thing, but you can’t miss her. Tina Jacobsis everywhere doing everything. You may see her bowl-ing a mighty game, playing euchre at Hank’s on Wednes-day, euchre at the Clubhouse two Tuesdays a month orpinochle with her Monday ladies card club. She golfs, enjoys trips to the casino, is a faithful church attendeeat St. Joe’s Catholic church, likes social affairs at theClubhouse, not to mention gar-dening and reading mysteries. Notonly that, but she doesn’t wearglasses and still drives! She’s 92,and as a beautician who is alwaysconscious of her appearance, shelooks like a million dollars.

What’s her secret? “Good genesand helping my Dad on the 200acre farm near Cheboygan whereI grew up,” she said. She was the3rd child of eight, five girls and 3boys. Her father always chose herto help him. “I milked cows beforegoing to school. My two older sis-ters always helped our mother. Ireally didn’t like farm life and lefthome at 19 to take a beauty coursein Sault Ste. Marie. I had jobs inPetoskey and in Traverse City, butthe chemicals ruined my hands”,she said.

Tina moved to Detroit with a sister, and worked for Fleetwood, Gen-eral Motors until the war was over. She remembers taking streetcars and buses. “Buseswere 5 cents, streetcars were 7 cents and the FreePress was free before the war. Detroit was a beautifulcity and I loved to shop on Woodward Avenue onMonday nights, especially Hudson’s”.

She met her husband John at a bridal shower for hissister in a big hall. They were married nearly two yearslater on January 24, 1950, and raised 4 daughters,Kathy, Susan, Judy and Pam. John held a job at MotorsMetals for 20 years, then bought and ran two differentbars in Detroit for the next 20 years or more. Tina wentback to hairdressing and owned her own shop untilretiring when she was 61.

In 1969 Tina and John, along withJohn’s brother and his wife, traveledUp North shopping for lots to buy. Abig sign on M-33 advertised ForestLake and the rest is history. Johnstarted building in 1972, and theyfinally moved here in 1981. Theyhave a beautiful view of Forest Lake, surrounded by our great forest andher productive gardens.

The Jacobs traveled extensively, twice visiting Tina’s father’s homecountry Poland . They vacationed inIreland, England and Scotland, aswell as visiting family in Italy withside trips to Austria, Switzerland,Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Theiryoungest daughter Pam worked forPorsche in Germany, so they visitedher there as well. Sadly, John Jacobspassed away 12 years ago.

At Christmastime, daughter Kathyand her family who live in Maryland, come here to Forest Lake to be with

Tina. She then travels back to Maryland, taking turnsvisiting her other daughters in Rockwood and Troy,Michigan, while enjoying six grandchildren and threegreat grandchildren. Tina returns in the spring and lately

A MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Those of you who attended this year’s annual Ox-roastsaw firsthand the addition the Maintenance departmentbuilt on the serving line. In past years we had to set upa tent in this area. The new structure is a 20 x 24 ftcovered open-air building permanently connected tothe east wing. This gives us the room needed to extendour serving line and provides more room for the catererto set up. We will also be using the structure to store ourpontoon working barge, picnic tables and refuse con-tainers in the winter. We are considering the possibilityof renting it for small family picnics and B.B.Qs.

Another project we were able to complete was theconstruction of a dust control device for use on thegravel roads in the Campground and Refuse / Storageareas. The mechanism was built by connecting a 200gallon plastic tank with a PVC water distribution system. The device is easily loaded onto the back of a pickuptruck. It is then filled with the proper dust control solutionand transported to the work site for application. Wewere able to build the unit for less than $150.00. Thisallows us to do our own dust control for 1/3 of what wehave paid in the past.

On July 17th Wobig Construction Company began re-pairs to several noncritical problem areas on the dam.A crack at the top of one of the pillars that hold the damblocks in place and three cracks in the spillway arebeing repaired. These cracks do not pose a problem atthis time. However, if not taken care of now could causebig problems later.

As always the Maintenance Department will continue tokeep Forest Lake’s buildings and grounds neat, cleanand in good working order.

she and Clarence Sinkowski, who lost his wife eightyears ago, have developed a very nice companionship.

We admire and marvel at her energy and enthusiasm at92 years. “It surprises me myself,” she said, “but as longas you’re here, you might as well enjoy it”. Her partingwords were, “Love one another, and do unto others asyou would have them do unto you”.
