Dear Parents/Guardians
It has been so lovely to have your children in school with us finally! They have settled in very well and having them in for a full day before
the rest of the school at the start of term has helped ease the way.
All of Year 7 have embraced the new way of moving around school between lessons and at lunchtime. We are really proud of how they
have dug deep to become part of the Canon Slade family in these uncertain times.
Due to the current restrictions we still are unable to invite you into school. Therefore we have created a presentation to give you some
information on different aspects of school life in Year 7.
We hope that we will be able to meet you all soon and that you feel your child has settled in well.
If you have any further concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best wishes
Mrs A Iles (Assistant Head KS3) and Mrs J Easton (Head of Year 7)

MEnglish in Year Seven
The English department at Canon Slade LOVE reading and we want to
support you all to love reading too. We have ten minutes private reading every
lesson – you can choose your book – and there are lots of fun reading activities within
classroom learning too.
During Year 7 you will be introduced to a very varied range of challenging texts from
across history and around the world, including: an anthology of poems linked by the use
of sound; a short modern play linked to fairy tales, myths and legends; short stories by
Roald Dahl and the novel Skellig linked to the poetry of William Blake. We learn to link to historical
context, which means considering what was happening at the time they were written and how that
has influenced the writer. We also teach you some new and impressive terminology to use, to help
you explain in more detail how a writer uses language to create effects.
We are not always reading and writing though. There is quite a bit of discussing, explaining and
acting that takes place in English, and you will develop your skills through active questioning, discussion and
debate.

LUM Maths in Year 7
A huge welcome from the Mathematics department at Canon Slade. We
are delighted to be teaching you a subject that we love and that is so
important as part of your secondary school experience.
During the course of Year 7 you will build on and extend your knowledge
on topics and concepts that you have met before and discover new topics that
you have not yet seen. All pupils follow the same course, which aims to enable
you to master concepts and techniques from the six strands of Number,
Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. In
addition to being able to retain and recall mathematical knowledge, you
are expected to be able to apply your knowledge to solve real-life problems and to reflect
and appreciate how different concepts and approaches can be used to solve
the same problem.
Some people think of Maths as a new language. Others
think of Maths as a tool to solve problems. Whatever you think, we know
that different pupils have different abilities in Maths and our hope for you is that
you become more confident in your use and application of Maths and that you reach
your potential in this subject.

GSteps to Success
Rationale“This is how we do it here” at Canon Slade.
Steps2Success aims to support whole-school behaviour that is focussed on learning. We build on positive staff-student relationships where students take ownership of learning behaviours. Students are also rewarded for excellent learning behaviours and they are praised and shared through achievable criteria. At Canon Slade we all want the highest
standards. We use Steps2Success to set and maintain those standards.
On the next slide you will be able to see the criteria that Steps to Success use and students are rewarded a number for each lesson for the types of learning behaviours
that they display

SET GROWTH MINDSET
In year 7 there is the temptation with some students to think that they are not capable to do the work.
We are here to support the development of a positive mindset towards every aspect of school life.
Growth mindset is the belief that one's intelligence can be grown or developed with persistence, effort, and a focus on learning. Individuals with
a growth mindset believe they are capable of learning nearly anything if they work hard and accept failures and challenges as opportunities to grow.
It is about not being able to do something YET.
e.g. You may not be able to answer a GCSE English question now but everything you do, practise and work towards brings you one step closer.

WE ARE HERE TO HELPWe have a dedicated Pastoral Team with experience of
nurturing new pupils successfully through their first vital year.
We use FORM TIME to reinforce the school ethos and to inspire and encourage
students. The FORM TUTOR will encourage an environment of mutual respect as well
as showing personal attention to every individual as often as possible. There is a vital
link between student, school and parents/carers.
Form Tutors are the main point of contact for any student. Checking that our students
have planners, a bag and are well-equipped for learning. They will deliver tutorial
worship, catch up activities and there is always time for personal reading. The Form
Tutors will discuss with students any rewards/sanctions they may have received in
lessons as shown in Steps 2 Success.
PLEASE CONTACT YOUR CHILD’S FORM TUTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY
CONCERNS.
Additionally, the Assistant Heads of Year are Mrs Braithwaite and Mr Crichton.
The Pastoral Assistant is Miss Crichton.
