It is hard to believe the first quarter of school is behind us and the holiday season is upon us. It has been an exciting start to the school year! I hope everyone had a chance to attend the Douglas High School Veteran’s Day Concert “Guardians of the Dream” which was fantastic again this year. A special feature of this year’s concert was the broadcasting of the event to our troops overseas via the armed forces media. It was also broadcast locally over 541radio.com. We thank everyone that was involved in putting on this program including Mr. Carwithen and Mr. Pust who both did a great job directing the band and choir performances.

Students and staff continue to stay busy and focused this school year as classrooms work on a variety of activities. Fourth graders made Oregon landform maps from plywood donated by Roseburg Forest Products. The kids learned about the location of deserts, mountains and rivers in Oregon. Battle of the Books teams are already formed in classrooms. The biggest hit of the year is Zumba! Fifth graders have just finished working on measurement, place value and graphs in math. Student created barometers are on display in the library. 5th graders visited the State Capitol to finish their

government unit. Sixth graders made their first college visit to Oregon State University. They toured the campus learning about the many opportunities that colleges can provide. The importance of good grades, volunteering, and club participation improves opportunities for scholarships and grants. 6th graders visited the wave lab and learned about Tsunamis and waves. Seeing waves in action at the Wave Lab was a great culminating experience. Great things are happening at McGovern. It’s an honor to serve the students, parents and community members of Winston-Dillard.

Mrs. Sinderbrand volunteered her time and skills to carry out a mock Presidential election. Students used the votes to figure statistical data as well as learning all of the steps to voting, from registering to signing the security envelope. LKG voted red on the Electoral College map. WMS is a 40 Assets school! “Building Our Kids’ Assets” is a framework for supporting the development of lifelong social skills. It will help us “grow” strong, productive citizens. Listen to your kids as they talk about the 40 Assets. They might even quiz YOU on how many assets you have! Thanks to the Commission on
Children & Families for providing the community connections for your kids!

The Trojan Loft is now open! The loft is located just to the east of our lower hall. It is a place where DHS students can get new and barely used clothing for next to nothing. Many donations from local merchants and other organizations have stocked it with some really nice stuff! Thanks to Kathy and Ron Lawrence and all their volunteers for making this happen. The loft will be open every school day in November and hours to be posted the rest of the school year. Stop by with your student and just have a look!
The annual Veteran’s Day concert was held at UCC’s Jacoby Auditorium on November 11th. The show began at 7:00 PM. Tickets were available at the front office and many other local businesses. Band Director Bob Carwithen and Choral Director Darin Pust had a special show planned for this year and did a grand job. The performance was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Network. It is certain that our service men and women enjoyed the program!
