‘Good’ is the enemy of ‘great.’

We want great results, not just

good ones.

My entry plan:

Five goals for first 100 days

1. Focus on student achievement.

Effective teachingand leadership

How do we know who’s effective?

Once we identify teaching stars, are we doing all the right things to keep them?

Three main reasons great teachers leave teaching:

Poor leadership

Poor working conditions

Counterproductive policies

Increasing the graduation rate

How do we raise the rate and make the diploma meaningful?

Our graduation rate has been rising:2010 – 69.92011 – 73.52012 – 75.1% (preliminary)

Is a CMS diploma the passport for a better tomorrow?

Seven keys to college readiness

Read at advanced levels in Grades K–2

Score ‘advanced’ in reading on the Maryland School Assessment in Grades 3–8

Complete advanced math in Grade 5

Complete Algebra 1 by Grade 8 with a ‘C’ or higher

Complete Algebra 2 by Grade 11 with a ‘C’ or higher

Score 3 on an AP exam or 4 on an IB exam

Score 1650 on the SAT or 24 on the ACT

But are we preparing students for the future?New jobs in the workforce require greater education and skills: 70% of the 30 fastest-growing jobs will require an education beyond high school. 40% of all new jobs will require at least an associate’s degree.

A diploma is just the beginning.

Without it, there is no beginning.

$292 million in increased earnings

$71 million in increased investments

$655 million more in increased home sales

$30 million more in increased auto sales

2,600 new jobs

2. Build a collaborative relationship with the Board of Education.

3. Increase organizational efficiency to ensure strong support to schools.

Teaching and learning through technology

What does this mean for the teaching and learning

process?

Performance management

What measures should the district use to assess performance?

Are we measuring the right things?

4. Establish a respectful, positive culture centered on teaching and learning.

What district leadership must provide:

Clear direction and expectations

Support and supervision

Shared accountability

Outstanding service

Get the right people on the bus.

Make schools a place where employees feel valued and students feel safe and ready to learn through a culture of respect.

‘A culture of discipline is not a principle of business; it is a principle of greatness.’

- Jim Collins

5. Build public trust through open, honest communication.

Parent and community connectionsDo we have a common definition of parent engagement and community involvement across CMS?
