Lighting the Candle Prayer:

As we light this flame, we light the flames of Love,

Peace, Truth, Right Conduct, and Non-violence

that lie within us all.

5

Forbearance Prayer

Let us have forbearance towards each other

Let us rejoice together

Let us all strive together

Let us live and move in harmony

Let us grow together

Let us cherish the wisdom that we have acquired

Let us live in complete harmony without misunderstanding

May all beings in the worlds be happy

Namaste, we honor the goodness in each other.

Session 5: Listening with Full Attention, Part 1. (Chapter 3)

Let us share each one’s understanding of what would be the outcome of practicing mindfulness during interactions with our loved ones:

•How would we benefit from practicing mindfulness as we interact with loved ones?

•Specifically with which members of my family would I practice mindfulness?

8

•What would be my innermost & cherished accomplishment(s) by practicing mindfulness?

•What kind of contribution would I be making to my family, my community, the world?

•What would be some lessons to be learned by practicing mindfulness?

True listening… is the arising of alert attention,

a space of presence in which the words are being received.

The words now become secondary. They may be meaningful or they may

not make sense. Far more important than what you are listening to is the act of listening itself, the space of conscious presence that

arises as you listen. -Eckhart Tolle

10

Eckhart Tolle explains: “Presence is the arising of a dimension of consciousness from where you can become aware that there is a voice in the head.

“That awareness is beyond thinking. It’s a space of consciousness where you can be the observer of your own mind—the awareness behind the thought processes.

11

“For human beings to discover this dimension is extraordinarily important. It is in fact, as I see it,

the next step in the evolution of humanity.”

“It is the most important thing that can happen in your lifetime.

“As Presence arises you’ll find in many areas of

your life enormous improvements. Eckhart Tolle

12

Giving

Giving full attention as they speak. We can be acutely aware, taking in words, tone of voice, facial expressions & hand gestures.

We are being open-minded,

non-judgmental, receptive &

understanding. We are aware of our internal reactions, &

we can overcome them to offer love

& respect.

Open-ended questions

Tell me about…

Why do you think…?

How did you…?

What happened when…?

What else can you do with…?

What would happen if…?

How might you use…?

Probing questions

“What will happen if what you said is true?”

“What made you think that?”

“What is the worst that could happen? Could I live through it?

“What is the best that could happen?

1. Requires individual to be active and learning using knowledge to solve a problem.

2. The answer will provide information as to what is understood and what needs more work.

3. Children become active learners.

17

Brainstorming: Why listening with full attention is important for a harmonious relationship?

18

FIVE ATTRIBUTES OF LISTENING WITH FULL ATTENTION.

1. Mindfully listen with an open heart. Do our hearts close up or remain open as we listen?

19

2. Mindfully listen with an empathic presence. Allows us to remain connected to our compassion and enter their world as it is seen by them.

20

3. Mindfully listen with an empathic response. It communicates that we understand them.

21

4. Mindfully listen with acceptance.

Listening with unconditional acceptance (love) requires an

open mind & letting go of judgment, even in behaviors

that appear to be non-acceptable.

The weak can never forgive.

Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

-Mahatma Gandhi

23

5. Mindfully listen by using clarifying questions.

Paraphrasing and repeating back allows us to clarify

meaning & gain understanding.

Guided Imagination for the Five Attributes of Listening with Full Attention.

Universal Consciousness We bow, oh temple of silence, altar of our

devotion where Oneness glows forever more. May your peace be shed to all, your love expressed in grand and ordinary ways.

That truth be the compass of our journey &

may the seeds of right conduct & non-violence be sown by the gentle hands of those to follow

in the awaited golden era of peace and love.
