What is Web 2.0?

Evolving web User centric web

Driven by users for users Not driven by corporations telling users what

they want Collaborative Processes (dialogue NOT

monologue) Collaborative learning (utilizing collective

knowledge) Multi-sensory communication

Text, video, audio, links, pictures, etc.

Multi-sensory Communication Just a few Web 2.0 tools…

Why Web 2.0? Some questions to ask:

What do your patrons want/need?

What does your library want/need?

How can you and your patrons benefit from Web 2.0?

Will the benefit outweigh the cost?

Why Web 2.0? Multi-sensory communication

Video tour of library Pictures of events Podcast of library events RSS Feeds for news, etc. Instant Messaging reference Wiki subject guides

Why Web 2.0 User collaboration

User testimonials User created content User reviews User videos of “Why I like my library”

Gives the user opportunity to be apart of the library (dialogue NOT monologue)

Shows that the library can evolve/adapt to change

Why not Web 2.0? Time consuming for small libraries Patron base More problem patron opportunities

Inappropriate comments or posts Predators and children Identity theft

Implications for libraries Libraries need to become a socially rich,

user centric, virtual community, which goes beyond the socially rich, user centric, real world community center. No pressure!

Librarians need to be a little more computer/internet savvy or have someone on staff that is…Not sure if I count.

Library 2.0

Library 2.0According to Jack M. Maness, “A theory

for Library 2.0 could be understood to have these four essential elements: “

It is user-centered It provides a multi-media experience It is socially rich It is communally innovative
