Lesson plan:
Topic: Data and Statistics-Data Displays
By: Mary Steinhauer
Description:
Students will participate in review and construction of 6 different types of data displays. Students will be given the opportunity to participate at the board and at their desks to gather data and construct all 6 types of data displays.
Page Descriptions:
Page 1: Introduction page, click on ‘notepad button’ to link to page with objectives and standards. List of all 6
types of data displays with link to Histograms section from histogram button
Page 2: Bar, Line, Circle Graphs (ones should already know) title page Links: by tapping on stars by each
name students will go to definition page for each of the 3 types of graphs. Title links to website on
making graphs from data.
Page 3: Graph parts identify (Horizontal and Vertical lines, Title) – Students will drag parts to correct
Locations and will be checked for each parts’ correctness.
Page 4: Data table for bar graph: with links to location of each city on Google Earth (great discussion starter),
hide and reveal for each population number, and table for selection of 4 cities. Link to pg.5 for data to
be used for a bar graph construction
Page 5: Bar graph construction: Includes pull tabs with the steps. Students will use notebook tools to construct.
Page 6: Line graph construction: Includes pull tabs with the steps. Students will use notebook tools to construct.
Page 7: Circle graph labeling: Activity of dragging correct information from the chart to the correct location in
circle, sounds attached to each pet, pull tab for answer check. Link to Tile Page so can go directly to
advanced data displays.
Page 8: More data displays title page: Histograms, Stem-and-Leaf Plots, Box-and-Whiskers Plots. Links: stars
link to definition pages for each type. Pull tab takes students to website that will provide tutorials,
practice, activities, and information on each.
Page 9: Frequency chart construction for histogram display. Link: Check your work when completed, pull
tabs with the steps.
Page 10: Histogram construction. Pull tabs with steps. Link to frequency table so can use data for histogram.
Page 11: Stem-and-Leaf Practice. Linked to website classzone animation.
Page 12: Box-and-Whisker Practice. Linked to website classzone animation.
Page 13-18: Linked definition pages with Link back to example of each data display.
Page 19: Linked frequency chart check for histogram construction with Link back to pg. 10.
