COMMUTING: EASY ACCESS TOWORK AND PLAY IN THE CITY
Transport re-imagined
DESIRE RORKE
@dezzierorke
T
he good news for thousands of frustra-
ted commuters battling peak hour traf-
fic in Kraaifontein and Brackenfell is
that brandnewMyCiTi bus routes are on the
cards. The bad news is theywill have towait
up to 18 years for them.
The City of Cape Town last week adopted
a city wide integrated public transport net-
work (IPTN) plan for the next 18 years to
meet the travel demands of a population,
predicted to increase from 4.1million in 2012
to approximately 5.6 million in 2032.
The key objective is to enhance the access
people have to their places of employment
and other amenities, said mayoral commit-
tee member for transport, Bret Herron at a
media briefing last week.
Cape Town reimagined
Herron imagines Cape Town to be a vi-
brant and dynamic city in 2031. A citywhere
millions of people can move between their
homes, places of work, education and enter-
tainment with ease.
Very European, if rolled out succesfully.
With the new plan in place approximate-
ly 80% of residents are placedwithin 500me-
ters of a trunkbus or rail or bus feeder route,
where significantly fewer people rely on pri-
vate vehicles, and those using public trans-
port can expect to reach their destinations
within an hour, Herron said.
The new plan incorporates 10 newMyCiTi
trunk routes on dedicated red lanes, connec-
ting passengers along several corridors.
In our areas on the periphery of the city,
it includes corridors between Mitchells
Plain andDurbanville,Westlake andBellvil-
le, and Wallacedene and Century City.
Connected
TheWallacedene route,whichwill specifi-
cally serve Kraaifontein and Brackenfell re-
sidents, will start off in the Boekombos area,
fromwhere it will travel along Old Paarl Ro-
ad, Van Riebeeck street, Langeberg Road,
Wellington Road, Durbanville Avenue,
Frans Conradie, a new road through Wing-
field to Sable Road, and from there to Ratan-
ga Road in Century City where a new termi-
nus station will connect buses to other rou-
tes into the city and beyond.

Marriage proposal surprise
MICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
A
young couple never expected
their romance would capture
global media attention.
George Erasmus (21) and girl-
friendAshleyKracht (26), originally
from Kansas City in America, were
catapulted into the limelight last
Monday when George enlisted fel-
low passengers help to propose to
Ashley at aKansas airport lastMon-
day.
George currently lives in Brac-
kenfell and Ashley lives in Durban-
ville. They were visiting Ashleys
parents in the USA.
The big moment occured when
George landed at Kansas Internatio-
nal Airport. He had asked fellow
passengers to each hand Ashley a
daisy as theywalked through the ar-
rivals hall.
George was last to disembark and
proposed to Ashley, who was by
then standing with an armful of flo-
wers.
The proposal was captured by a
Kansas television crew and made
headlines on the internet and in
South Africa.
But Ashley says they never expec-
ted all the publicity.
It is unbelievable. The airline
had told George that there might be
a local camera crew there to cover
it, but he didnt set any of that up
himself and we definitely didnt ex-
pect anything like the response
weve received, she told TygerBur-
ger.
Ashley says George is a true ro-
mantic, constantly leaving surpri-
ses in her bag, or little notes slid
under the door of my house in the
morning reminding me he loves
me.
She had no idea he was going to
propose at the airport.
I was just so excited for him to
join us in America.
Her parents knew though.
George had been in communica-
tion and doing some planning with
them. They all love George, so they
were very excited.
George says he decided in Janua-
ry that he wanted to marry Ashley.
I knew that I wanted to ask her
in the USA, since we will be getting
married in SA, said Geroge.
He says their families reaction
was of shock, excitement and joy.
But I think we are more shocked
than them about how big it has got-
ten. The huge response and all the
media stuff is still a bit unreal.
Georges mom, Alet, lives in
Eversdal with dad Merwe and says
George has always been adventu-
rous.
She said on theWednesday before
he left for the USA, he slept on the
peak of the Matroosberg in the
snow.
Alet said Ashley is a lively and
bubbly girl. The house if full of life
when she visits. Shes beautiful on
the inside and out and has a heart
for people.
Her parents have been to SA
three times and weve visited toge-
ther, the last time in December,
when we camped out by the sea.
Alet says shes not sure if it was
love at first sight for the two, but
they became a couple quickly and
complement each other perfectly.
George and Ashley met at the Ja-
bulani Africa Ministries in Hout
Bay.
George is studying to be a parame-
dic and Ashley says shes going to
work with a ministry to start up a
Child Care Center in Sir Lowrys
Pass village.
The couple plan tomarry in Janu-
ary.

Kansas City in America, but now living in Durbanville, shortly after George
proposed to her at a Kansas airport.

The private sector should also take note of
this commitment and utilize this opportuni-
ty as a catalyst for economic development in
and around this area, as well as at or along
the newBRT and rail trunk routes, he said.
According to Herron this network will see
the number of trips in the morning peak
hours increase by about 46%.
Future travel
In developing the IPTN, the city applied
different future land-use scenarios to deter-
mine the future travel patterns the reason
being that transport is a demand deriving
from themanner in which land is used. The-
reafter, a transport demandmodelwas deve-
loped to emulate the current reality of priva-
te and public transport usage. This model
was utilised to predict the future travel de-
mand in the city, using a 20-year planning
horizon for the projected population and em-
ployment distribution called the 2032
transport demand modelling exercise, he
said.
Five public transport network alternati-
ves were then generated to test which net-
work configuration best responded to the
projected demand revealed from the diffe-
rent land-use scenarios and to test what ef-
fect this may have on the economy, environ-
ment and issues of socio-economic concern,
to arrive at the preferred transport network
adopted.
Herron added that for the citys public
transport system to be viable and efficient,
more passengers have to live and work in
close proximity to the trunk routes.
Furthermore, the land has to be develo-
ped in such a manner that it leads to increa-
sed density along these routes, meaning
that this plan will serve as a pre-cursor to
future development.
Operational plan
The operational plan, in other words the
detail about fleet type, fare design, timeta-
bles and frequency on the identified routes,
will be submitted to the council by the end
of this year.
The implementation plan, detailing the
planned phases, will also be submitted by
this time, followed by the business plan to
be submitted by mid 2015.
Herron estimates the cost of the project to
be at the R32 billion mark in todays rand
terms, which will probably increase as time
passes.
Malmesbury train replaced
by bus service
Richard Walker, regional manager for
Metrorail Western Cape, confirmed that a
bus service will operate between Kraai-
fontein and Malmesbury until further
notice.
The bus service is an alternative
arrangement due to a Transnet freight
train that de-railed last week Tuesday on
the line to Malmesbury, preventing
Metrorail from operating its usual daily
service to and from the Swartland town.
Walker explained that the Malmesbury
service will only be resumed once
Transnet has the line fully operational
again.
An estimated date for resumption of
normal operations is not yet confirmed.

A policewoman and two private investi-
gators were arrested in Kraaifontein af-
ter a 38-year-old homeless man in Eiken-
dal died while being arrested on Friday.
HesterBlom (54) a lieutenant at theSea-
point Police Station, accompanied by two
private investigators, traced thevictim to
Van der Ross Street on Friday morning
where they apprehended him.
According to eyewitness reports, the
two men pulled the man down to the
ground after he resisted arrest, said W/
O Khunjulwa Sam, spokesperson at the
Kraaifontein police station.
According to Sam, the victimwasbeing
sought on charges of crimen injuria, per-
taining to alleged SMS texts sent to a com-
plainant.
One of the private investigators told
him to stop resisting in order for them to
talk to him. He did not give way and one
of themen grabbed him at the throat whi-
le the other taped his legs and feet toge-
ther with duct tape, said Sam, referring
to the eyewitness reports.
According to bystanders the victim
shouted for help and said he couldnt bre-
ath. Allegedly they did no let go of his
throat and he lost conciousness and died
on the scene.
According to Sam, Lt. Blom sat on the
deceased while all the commotion was
going on.
Blomwas suspended and alongside the
two investigators, aged 58 and 63, arre-
sted for murder.
The three appeared in the Bluedowns
magistrate court on Monday.
According to Sam it was not clear at
this stage, why the police officer intended
to arrest the man for a minor crime such
as crimen injuria and what the involve-
ment of the investigators from a Cape
Town firm were.
Western Cape police Colonel Tembin-
kosi Kinana said the case is under inves-
tigation.
Murder charge
for policewoman
Sixteen people were injured on Monday
morning when a taxi overturned on the N1
near the Winelands one stop in Kraaifon-
tein.
When ER24 paramedics arrived, they
found a taxi lying on its side near an em-
bankment. Fellow motorists had stopped
and offered assistance to the injured, said
Russel Meiring from ER24s media office.
Metro services had to close the highway
for an hour.
Meiring said paramedics began their tre-
atment of the 16 patients on the scene, while
provincial services put a ladder across the
embankment so patients could be moved.
Once all the patients were moved across
the embankment, they were transported to
various hospitals in the area for further me-
dical treatment, he said.
The cause of the collision is not yet known.
Taxi overturns onN1 16 injured
Kraaifontein police last week released vi-
deo clips of threemen suspected of murde-
ring taxi boss Allie Ndyosi (52) three
weeks ago. They were caught on camera
entering Ndyosis home in Bloekombos,
where he was shot and killed in front of
his family. Police are calling on the public
for assistance in finding the men.
According to police the men fled, not
knowing they had been filmed by the secu-
rity cameras at Ndyosis house.

Alkoholisme lei
tot vele probleme
D
ie gebruik van alkoholiese
drank is n integrale deel van
ons samelewing. Die mens
gebruik alkoholiese dranke van die
vroegste tye af in sy alledaagse
omgang met mense.
Gesondheidswerkers soos psigiaters,
dokters, sielkundiges, predikante en
sosiale werkers kry dikwels in hul
werk te doen met mense wat alkohol
op sodanige wyse gebruik dat dit vir
hulle n probleem geword het. Alkoho-
lisme is waarskynlik die grootste
enkele probleem wat sielkundiges in
hul praktyk hanteer.
Benewens alkoholisme maak die
gesondheidswerkers ook bemoeienis
met ander vorme van drankmisbruik.
In hierdie artikel kyk ons kortliks na
enkele van hierdie vorme van drank-
misbruik. n Alkoholis is n persoon
wat wel drank misbruik, terwyl n
drankmisbruiker nie noodwendig n
alkoholis is nie. So byvoorbeeld kan
n geleentheidsdrinker per geleentheid
ook drank misbruik.
n Drankmisbruiker misbruik drank
wanneer alkohol nie op n matige
wyse nie, maar wel op n onbeheerde
en onbeheerste wyse gebruik word.
Drankmisbruik kan lei tot onaan-
vaarbare gedrag soos roekelose of
geweldadige gedrag. Drankmisbruik is
eerder n gewoonte as n siekte.
Dan kry ons die episodies-oormatige
drankgebruiker wat alkohol in so n
mate gebruik dat hy die aanvaarbare
sosiale norme oorskry en dikwels
beheer verloor en dan drink totdat hy
besope is. Hierdie drankgebruiker
mag blootgestel word aan fisiese
beserings, soos met ongelukke wan-
neer hy onder die invloed is.
Hierdie drinkpatroon kan tot
alkoholisme ontwikkel.
Die progressief-oormatige drankge-
bruiker word deur sommige skrywers
reeds as n alkoholis beskou. Hierdie
tipe alkoholgebruiker drink met die
uitsluitlike doel om besope te raak.
Hierdie persoon word vir progres-
sief langer tye besope, afgewissel met
al korter wordende tydperke tussen sy
drinkepisodes. Hierdie vorm van
drankmisbruik hou fisieke, emosione-
le en sosiale probleme vir homself en
sy medemens in. Hierdie drinkpa-
troon kan lei tot onder meer akute
maagontsteking, beskadiging van die
lewer en die hartspiere, impotensie by
mans, beskadiging van die fetus by
swanger vroue, en verswakking van
spiere. Omrede hierdie gebruiker
dikwels ook vir langer tye nie eet nie,
kan dit tot n voedingswanbalans en
n verswakte immuunstelsel van die
liggaam ontwikkel.
Dit kan ook tot sielkundig nadelige
effekte lei, soos verswakking van
inhibisie in seksuele gedrag, toename
in aggressie, drastiese gemoedskom-
melinge, aggressie en afname in
geheue. Daar is verskeie sieninge en
definisies oor wat alkoholisme presies
is. Kortliks kan dit gesien word as n
fisiologiese en/of sielkundige afhank-
likheid (of verslaafdheid) aan alkohol.
Dit is n chroniese gedragsafwyking
en die alkoholis het kontrole oor sy
drinkgewoonte verloor.
Alkoholisme is n toestand waarin
die persoon nie behoorlik as norma-
le mens kan funksioneer binne sy
gesinsopset, by sy werk en binne sy
sosiale omgewing nie.
Drankmisbruik het al soveel skade
aan mense en hul naastes veroorsaak,
dat ek oortuig is dat waar dit voor-
kom, dit hanteer en aangespreek moet
word.
Alkoholmisbruik impakteer negatief
op n gebruiker se persoonlikheid en
karakter. Dit affekteer dikwels ook sy
werk en doen soveel skade aan sy
verhoudings, huwelik en aan sy
kinders.

its awards ceremony where our college and
staff competedwith the nine other traffic and

The We Luv Wine festival, now in its se-
cond year, was launched at Villiera Wines
on Thursday.
The festival, which will return to Cape-
Gate in August, nominated The Pebbles
Project as their official charity beneficiary
this year.
The Pebbles Project, founded in 2004, sup-
ports children from farmworker communi-
ties in the SouthAfricanwinelands. The or-
ganisations work currently impacts the li-
ves of over 780 children aged 0-18 years.
Our work supports children, teenagers,
parents and wider communities in the So-
merset West, Stellenbosch, Wellington and
Paarl areas, says founder Sophia Warner,
who came to SouthAfrica from theUKwith
a 13-year background in special needs tea-
ching.
TheworkandmissionofThePebblesPro-
ject consists of fivemain pillars: health, nu-
trition, education, community and protec-
tion.
The mission is carried out in clinics and
various after-care centres in thewinelands.
We are excited to be part of this festival
and will use the opportunity to create awa-
reness about theworkwe do, saidWarner.
The festival runs on Friday and Saturday
22 and 23 August, and will provide wine lo-
vers with a smorgasbord of wines to taste
and buy directly from the producers.
A wide selection to suit every palate and
wallet, including port, bubbly and pot-stil-
led brandy, will be on offer.
Wewanted to offer visitors a wide range
ofwine andwine-related products and have
therefore invited well-known brands as
well as boutique and family-owned wine-
ries fromright across the country to exhibit
during the festival, says CapeGate Marke-
ting Manager Amanda McCarthy.
Hungry tummies are catered for with
products like biltong, cheese, olives, olive
oil and chocolates, as food exhibitors have
been invited to provide eats for sale.

They usually develop several hours after
exposure to the cold. The burning and it-
ching of toes, fingers, heels, ears and nose,
which, becomesmore intense if you go into
a warm room.
If this rings a bell, you are probably ac-
quaintedwith the small, itchy swellings on
the skin that occur as a reaction to cold
temperatures.
Chilblains can be uncomfortable, but
they rarely, however, cause any permanent
damage and will normally heal within a
week or two if further exposure to the cold
is avoided.
Chilblains are the result of an abnormal
reaction to the cold. When the skin is cold,
blood vessels near its surface get narrower.
If the skin is then exposed to heat, the
blood vessels become wider.
If this happens too quickly, blood can le-
ak into the surrounding tissue. This is
thought to be the reason for the swelling
and itchiness associated with chilblains.
Most people dont need to seek medical
advice, however, you should see your GP
or chiropodist for advice if you have severe
or recurring chilblains, or if they dont im-
prove within a few weeks. You should also
seek medical advice if you think your skin
may have become infected.
If you are susceptible to chilblains, you
can reduce your risk of developing them
by limiting your exposure to the cold, loo-
king after your feet and taking steps to im-
prove your circulation.
A number of self-help measures can
help, including:
wearing warm clothes and ensuring yo-
ur home is well heated; keeping active;
stopping smoking; avoiding tight-fitting
shoes and boots.
If your skin gets cold, its important to
warm it up gradually. Heating the skin too
quickly, for example by placing your feet
in hot water or near a heater, is one of the
main causes of chilblains.
V Source: http://www.nhs.uk.
The cold facts about
winter chilblains
Chilblains are uncomfortable but will
normally heal on its own within a
week or two.
Its become the short-hand termfornon-surgi-
cal anti-ageing interventions. Justwhat is this
toxin, Botox, that so many are turning to?
Botox (botulinim toxin), used for both cos-
metic and medical interventions, is a purified
and diluted form of the clostridium botuli-
num bacteria. Its beauty lies in its ability to
relax the muscle that has been injected.
Botoxblocks thenerve receptors that inner-
vate the muscle injected. This stops the mus-
cle from being able to receive signals to con-
tract, which means the overlying skin smoot-
hes over and wrinkles cannot deepen.
The hard facts are, however, that while this
treatment is cheaper than a surgical facelift,
the effect is only temporary and follow-ups
are needed to maintain the effect. The durati-
on of the effect of Botox depends on anumber
of factors includingmusclemass and size, skin
thickness, ethnicity and gender.
Today doctors recommend that people start
using Botox from the age of around 27 to 30.
Some practitioners also advise it as a preven-
tative measure to prevent wrinkles in the fu-
ture, and to delay cosmetic surgery.
Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding,
have an infection or have a neurological disea-
se or affliction such as Bells palsy, should
steer clear from Botox. And remember this is
not the elixir of youth. If your expectations
are to return to your 18-year-old visage, then
best you lower them.
Temporary bruising is the most common
side effect. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48
hours, can occur, but this is rare. Some pa-
tients also develop eyebrow or eyelid ptosis
caused by the toxin migrating into the sur-
rounding area and causing temporary paraly-
sis. Its disconcerting but does pass.
Another side effect is the emotional one:
disappointment. Somepatients have unrealis-
tic expectations of the result, which is why a
prior consultation is vital.
For Botox, you should go to someone who
is trained in theusage, dosage andapplication.
In fact, it should only be applied by a doctor,
in a sterile environment, whohas been trained
in the administration of the product.
Depending on the practitioner and the
number of areas injected in one sitting, pa-
tients can expect the procedure to last 15 to
30 minutes. The effect of the Botox is directly
related to the number of units used per area.
Costs vary depending on where you go and
the area being treated. Expect to pay R600 to
R1 800 per session.

With the tax return filing date looming clo-
ser, countless taxpayers have fallen victim
to an elaborate scam.
Promising a believable windfall, it is by
nomeans only the ignorant who have fallen
for it.
Unsuspecting tax payers receive an email
from SARSeFilingAlert, informing them
that they have received a tax credit pay-
ment into their bank accounts by Sars E-fi-
ling.
This amount could range from anything
from R2000 to R8000, making it in range of
the average annual tax return payout.
The person is then prompted to click on
a link in order to confirm online epay-
ment, and it is on this link where the vic-
tim is very cleverly deceived to give out
their banking details.
Once this is done, the scammers are
equippedwith the necessary information to
steal funds from your account at any time.
The South African Revenue Service
(Sars) is aware of this scam and is currently
investigating it.
They warns tax payers to be extra vigi-
lant.
Many tax payers have already been
scammed and countless others have called
to enquire about this email, says a spokes-
person at Sars who warns tax payers not to
respond to this email.
The particular email address does not
belong to us and Sars will never prompt
anyone, even E-filers, to provide banking
details. If a payment is to be made by us, we
will automatically deposit it into your bank
account, he says.
In addition tax return filing date only
opens on 1 July, and no return payouts
could have been made yet, he adds.
Sars urges all tax payers to rather contact
them at their contact centre on 0800 00 7277,
if they should be unsure about anything
Sars related payments.

Ek skryf vandag oor iets wat
my baie na aan die hart l. My
probleem is gesonde mense wat
by winkelsentrums op parke-
ring vir gestremdes stilhou.
Om alles te kroon, het hulle n
teken van gestremdheid in die
kar.
Ek was op Sondag 22 Junie
by Boulevard Square in
Brackenfell. Toe ek uitkom,
staan n Toyota RunX op die
genoemde parkering. Wat die
kar so opvallend maak, is dat
plaveisel moet l.
Die motorbestuurder het
ongeveer n uur later saam met
haar familie en die honde gaan
stap sonder enige teken van
gestremdheid.
Die rede hoekom dit my so
na aan die hart l, is omdat ek
n vriendin het wat in n
rolstoel is. Ek weet hoe sy
sukkel met parkering, omdat
uitgegroeide, ongevoelige
mense hul parkering steel.

I would start my own party
which will make no empty
promises, only one promise:
total dedication to the animals
of our country (Walk the talk
on animal rights, TygerBurg-
er, 18 June).
How many times must I hear
or read that a group of people
behaved like animals, when
we can actually learn a lot
from animals.
Vote to put an end
to animal cruelty
I am not aware of animals
raping, killing or stealing from
each other. Yes, to stay alive
and feed their young maybe
its a cruel nature.
A stray animal who is hungry
and cold, fending for itself out
there is sad. Whats sadder is
that a human is most likely the
reason behind it.
If I had my way, I would start
a party which stands up for
them, with harsh cruelty to
animals laws and sentences.
It is a privilege to have a dog,
cat or even a budgie. I wouldnt
be much of a politician, but
animals need tender love and
care. My party would be a
guaranteed vote, with results.
MARTIN
Bothasig
Na aanleiding van Koert Meyer
se teenkanting teen die dood-
straf, sou dit goed wees as hy
ons kon voorsien van n
alternatiewe, gepaste straf vir
die barbare wat ou mense op
hul plaas doodmartel of klein
kindertjies verkrag en ver-
brand, of vermink (Death
penalty a violent act, Tyger-
Burger, 18 Junie).
Daar is nog vele barbaarse
optredes wat ek kan noem,
maar ons is almal bewus van
wat ons daagliks in die nuus
sien.
Dit is baie duidelik uit
statistiek dat tronkstraf nie n
doeltreffende straf is nie,
aangesien verskeie verkragters
en moordenaars voortgaan met
hul misdade nadat hulle
vrygelaat word of tydens
borgtog of parool.
In verskeie lande is dit
onteenseglik bewys dat dood-
straf n ernstige afskrikmiddel
is. Wanneer die doodstraf n
werklikheid is, verander dit
misdadigers se houding oor die
lewe en hulle voel anders
daaroor om n lewe te neem.
Mnr. Meyer se aanname dat
mense wat die doodstraf
ondersteun, potensile moorde-
naars is, getuig van sy onkunde
oor wie en wat n moordenaar
is. n Moordenaar het geen
respek vir ander se lewens nie.
Wanneer ek die doodstraf
ondersteun, ondersteun ek die
doodmaak van n persoon wat
n onskuldige persoon se lewe
geminag het. Ek ondersteun nie
die doodstraf vir mense wat

Ondersteun straf vir
diwat dit verdien
Ek stem saam met Koert Meyer
dat die doodstraf n gewelddadi-
ge daad is (Death Penalty is a
violent act, TygerBurger, 18
Junie). Dis n aaklige manier
om te sterf. Ek wil ook nooit in
n posisie wees om iemand se
lewe te neem nie. God gee lewe
en Hy alleen mag besluit
wanneer iemand se tyd verby
is. n Lewe is heilig vir Hom.
Maar wat maak jy met
moordenaars? Hulle het iemand
se reg weggeneem om te leef.
Hy gaan na n lang verhoor
tronk toe, gedra hom mooi en
kom na n paar jaar uit kastig
gerehabiliteer.
Hy pas nrens in nie, kry nie
werk nie, wend hom weer tot
misdaad om te oorleef en pleeg
dan weer moord. Wat nou mnr.
Meyer? Het jy n oplossing? Wat
gaan jy maak as een van jou
geliefdes deur n gewelddadige
mens vermoor word?
Dit gaan darem bitter moeilik
wees om daardie persoon te
vergewe.
As die doodstraf nie die
oplossing is nie, wat is? Le-
wenslange tronkstraf bestaan
nie meer nie.
Ons is almal keelvol vir
misdaad. Wat is die oplossing
as dit nie doodstraf is nie?

SLICE OF LIFE
Injustice no
reason to be
ungrateful
Ronel Button from Kraaifontein wrote
TygerBurger a letter which we felt
contains such a strong message that it
should rather be used as our leader
article:
We are all born with a strong inner
sense of fairness and a strong desire to
fight for our rights, especially when
treated unfairly. As humans, at some
stage in our lives, we all have been
treated unfairly, whether it be in the
workplace or even in our own homes.
But lets be reminded of 1 Peter 2:19 For
God is pleased with you when you do
what you know is right and patiently
endure unfair treatment.
Its just a fact: life today can be bluntly
unfair, and we are all in a mighty
struggle to make our mark in this world,
and sad to say, people are the cause of
injustice.
But I always remind myself that even
though life is unjustly unfair, I can
choose my state of mind at any given
moment, and in choosing a positive state,
together with forgiveness, I set myself
free. Then in spite of injustice, life
becomes a magnificent gift because I
have the ability to understand that
Every problem you have, is life happen-
ing for you and not to you. And too all
that mistreat and abuse the kindness of
another, may you be reminded that what
you sow you shall reap. Lets all work
together towards acceptance and finding
common ground and treating each other
with humility, for we are all trying to
survive in this world.

Its definitely for the love of it, says Ilse
Els, manager of the organisation that daily
opens its heart and its door to empower tho-
se less fortunate.
Ilse and 15 others ofwhich 10 are employ-
ed fulltime and six are permanent volun-
teers practice their calling from a big old
house in Bellville.
At the offices of theMetroEvangelical Ser-
vices, or MES, Ilse and her teams main pur-
pose, through the various projects they run,
is to teach people to fish.
One of these projects is the GROW job re-
habilitation project where they make the
unemployable, employable says Ilse.
You see, God uses us all. There are none
more or less important than the other. There
are nonemore or less useful. There is a place
for us all, she says.
MES Cape Town originated from the Bell-
ville Care Mission in 1999, and from 2006 to
2008 the Missions focus shifted from being
solely a church for street people to holistic
rehabilitation. In November 2008 the two or-
ganisations merged and MES Cape Town
was established.
MESs key aim countrywide is to provide
sustainable solutions to poverty in Cape
Town, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and
Kempton Park, Ilse says.
The office in Cape Town provides access
to services to the homeless and vulnerable
community of the northern suburbs.
Key focus areas include poverty alleviati-
on and community enrichment, skills trai-
ning and enterprise development, and social
services.
These three core businessunits offer spiri-
tual guidance to those in need in shelters
and on the streets, and social relief in the
form of soup kitchens and outreaches to the
street community.
They also provide a safe place to stay to
clients on MES programmes, for the durati-
on of their intervention, and skills training
for people between 18 and 35 with ameasure
of vocational skills.
Ilse says they employ trained clients in va-
rious jobs and create more job opportuni-
ties. Then theres their development plan for
each client, to help them reunite with their
family, or rehabilitate.
They practice Christian disciplines with
respect and fairness, accountability with
strong and clear roles, and sound financial
procedures with transparencey and integri-
ty, as their guiding priciples.
In 2012/2013 MES served 8 823 meals, 732
people received clothing, 278 people were as-
sistedwithCVs and 806 clientswere assisted
through the GROW programme.
Besides financial support, organisations
and their staff can get involved through ou-
treaches such as Mandela Day, Corporate
service days, weekend outreaches, by cy-
cling the PicknPay Argus Tour or doing
MESs Dirtopia mountain bike event.
MES is this year 27-years old and has
launched a sustainability trust where do-
nors can give the organisation a special gift
such as shares, legacies or finances that
will guarantee our future, Ilse says.
MES is also BBBEE compliant and an 18A
tax certificate can be issued for donations.
Once a month MES take some of these bu-
siness people on a nighttime streetwalk ou-
treach.
It puts them in the shoes of the people out
there in the cold. It changes their thinking.
And that is what we need for people to un-
derstand.
Giving love and care to homeless
The MES team are, in front, Yvette Conradie and Annelise Le Grange. In the second row are Willie
Els, Daniel Rossouw, Veronica Geduld, Ilse Els, Marina Murray, Robert Viga and Calvin Enslin. At
the back are Harold Abrahams, Salome Els, Hilke Erasmus, Arno Scheepers, Clarina Hanekom,
Andre van Graan, Karen Nyarufero, Alda van der Westhuizen and Joseph Fredericks.

Die Kraaifontein-Voortrekkers het weer
vanjaar n pretloop gerel ten bate van die
Helpende Hand-tak in Kraaifontein.
oorhandig.HennieRossouw, takbestuurder,
het dit in ontvangs geneem.
Ons oordleier, Izak Hattingh, het vir ons
die beginskoot afgevuur en elkeen se medal-
je by die eindpunt oorhandig.
