CRIME: HOMELESS MAN DIES DURING SUSPICIOUS ARREST

A policewoman was arrested in Kraai-fontein on Friday after her alleged in-volvement in the murder of a 38-year-

old homeless man in Eikendal.Hester Blom (54), a lieutenant at the Sea

Point police station, accompanied by twoprivate investigators, traced the victim toVan der Ross Street on Friday morning whe-re they apprehended him.

“According to eyewitness reports, the twomenpulled themandown to the groundafter

he resisted arrest,” said W/O KhunjulwaSam, spokesperson at the Kraaifontein poli-ce station.

SMS textsAccording to Khunjulwa the victim was

being sought on charges of crimen injuria,pertaining to alleged SMS texts sent to acomplainant.

“One of the private investigators told himto stop resisting in order for them to talk tohim. He did not accede their request and oneof the men grabbed him by the throat whilethe other taped his legs and feet together

with duct tape,” said Sam, referring to theeyewitness reports.

“The victim, according to bystanders,shouted for help and told them that he couldnot breathe. Allegedly they did no let go ofhis throat and he lost conciousness and diedon the scene.”

According to Sam, Lt Blom sat on the dece-ased while all this commotion was going on.

Arrested for murderBlom was suspended and along with the

two investigators, aged 58 and 63, arrestedfor murder.

The three accused appeared in the Blue-downs magistrate court on Monday.

According to Sam, it was not clear at thisstage why the police officer intended to ar-rest the man for a minor crime such as cri-men injuria.

Sam also could not say what the involve-ment of the private investigators from a Ca-pe Town firm were.

When the same question was posed to theWestern Cape Provincial Police Headquar-ters, Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said thatthe case is still under investigation, and fur-ther aspects could not yet be disclosed.

friendAshleyKracht (26), originallyfrom Kansas City in America, werecatapulted into the limelight lastMonday when George proposed toAshley at an airport with the helpof fellow passengers.The couple currently live inSouth

Africa – he in Brackenfell and shein Durbanville – and are visitingAshley’s parents in the USA.The big moment happened when

George landed at Kansas Internatio-nal Airport. He had asked fellowpassengers on his flight to eachhand Ashley a daisy as they walkedthrough arrivals.Georgewas last to disembark, and

proposed toAshleyas she stoodwitha bunch of flowers handed to her bystrangers.Hehadpre-arranged it allwith United Airlines.The proposal was captured by a

Kansas television crew and madeheadlines on the internet and inSouth Africa.Ashley says they never expected

all the publicity.“It is unbelievable! The airline

told George there might be a localcamera crew there to cover it, but hedidn’t set any of that up himself andwe definitely didn’t expect anythinglike the response we’ve received,”she told TygerBurger.“It is all a bit overwhelming for

us, to be honest.”Ashley says George is a true ro-

mantic, constantly leaving surpri-ses in her bag, “or little notes slidunder the door of my house in themorning reminding me he lovesme.”She had no idea he was going to

propose at the airport.Her parents knew though.

“George had been in communica-tion and doing some planning withthem. They all love George, so theywere very excited for us.”She says she did find the televisi-

on crew at the airport a bit strange.“It was actually one of the first

things I noticed when we were wai-ting for George to arrive. I kept as-king people questions such as ‘Iwonderwhat they’re covering?Whoare they here to see?’ I finally askedone of them and he told me they we-re there for a sports celebrity whohappened to be on the same plane.”George said he started thinking

about his proposal in January.“I knew that I wanted to ask her

in the USA, since we will be gettingmarried in SA,” he said.“I also wanted to have her family

and friends close as I know howmuch that means to her. So it waspretty obvious that since we are he-re for only three weeks, that the air-port is the last place she will be ex-

pecting anything, and that way wecan spend asmuch as possible of ourtime in Kansas.”George says he’s known for a whi-

le thatAshleywasTheOne – “Prettymuch since the first kiss,” he jokes.He says their families’ reaction

was of “shock, excitement and joy.But I think we are more shockedthan them at how big it has gotten.“The huge response and all the

media stuff is still a bit unreal.”George’s mom, Alet, lives in

Eversdal with dad Merwe. She saidGeorge was always adventurous.She said he slept on Matroosberg

before leaving for USA.George andAshleymetwhilewor-

king at the Jabulani Africa Minis-tries in Hout Bay.George is studying to be a parame-

es, their basic right to unthreatened edu-cation.“We, the young citizens of Kraaifontein,

are concerned with our quality of life. Weare impoverished and our future is threa-tened. The rate at which young people aredying and being qualified as criminals be-cause of gangsterism and drug abuse canno longer be tolerated...We want our livesback and we refuse to continue living infear,” the memorandum stated.Divan Smith, a junior city councillor at

the City of Cape Town andlearner at the school, initia-ted this drive under thebanner #heroesRoar.Smith and his co-lear-

ners believe that the afore-said crimes are a threat totheir basic human rightsand therefore unaccepta-ble.In their memorandum

they continued to say thepresence of illegal firearmsand other weapons in theirschool and community isoutrageous.They also spoke of the to-

leranceby the communityof abuseagainstwomen and children and said that the yo-uth will no longer allow this tolerance tocontinue.“...it reflects grossly on our society and

on our community and it is fundamentallywrong,” they stated.“We have the right go be reared in a lo-

The youth acknowled-ged that these ideals arenot easily obtainable, butby no means impossible.“Thus, we start today.

prove to them that there ishope and that their future

tive.“It was wonderfull to see the youth take

initiative in matters threatening theirrights. Our country is in safe hands. I hopethat this project will be an inspiration foryouth across the city,” she said.“The city will do everything in their po-

Solar power farm planAR170million solar power farmproject

– one of about nine in theWestern Ca-pe – is planned for the Durbanville

area.TheCity ofCapeTown’s spatial planning,

environment and land use management(Spelum) committee has approved an appli-cation for a solar power farm on AndréBrink’s Bloublommetjieskloof farm onSlent Road near Klipheuwel.Spelum gave consent on 11 June for the

solar power plant to be operated by Suns-pot.According to a city media release, this is

in line with the city’s commitment to deve-loping the green economy. The new solarpower plant aims to assist in reducing CapeTown’s carbon footprint.The power plant will cover approximate-

ly 12,5 ha of the 999 ha farm on land that iscurrently not cultivated. It will generate fi-ve megawatts of electricity.“This is in line with the national Depart-

ment of Energy’s Renewable Energy Inde-pendent Power Producer Procurement Pro-gramme (REIPPPP),” stated the city.The crystalline panels will be erected on

support structures up to three metres high.The electrical current generated will beconverted to 11 kV for transmission to theProspect Hill substation located approx-imately 800m from the site. Eskomhas indi-cated its support for this plant.Authorisation was granted in terms of

the National Environmental ManagementAct (Nema) and a record of decision was is-sued by Heritage Western Cape in 2012.However, this is not the final go-ahead

yet. The green light from Spelum is just thefirst stage and approval of the final stage ofthe process by the National Energy Regula-tor (Nersa) is only expected in November,said Mark Bleloch of Sunspot.This includes adherence to critical crite-

ria regarding costs and economic develop-

ment.However, Bleloch is optimistic they will

get the go-ahead.The solar farm will have about 17 000 so-

lar panels each 2m² in size, he said, and willbe able to turn towards the sun tomaximizeavailable sunlight.A training centre and visitor centre is al-

so planned on the farm employees will betrained. It will also be accessible for educa-tional visits by school groups.It is expected that this investment will

create 25 permanent jobs, excluding jobscreated during the construction period.Bleloch said itmay take about another ye-

ar before the project is operational follo-wing final approval.According to himSunspot looks for suita-

ble land to build their solar power farms,and approached the landowner, Brink, tobuild the solar power farm on his land.A similar solar power farm has been un-

der construction by SlimSun near Malmes-bury since January this year – the first forthe Western Cape.Similar Sunspot projects on land near

Bonnievale, McGregor, Wolseley, Hexri-vier Valley, Riebeek-Kasteel and Eendekuilare also in the process of being approved.Other companies are planning similar

projects near Vredendal and north of Piket-berg.SpelumchairpersonChristoKannenberg

said this application has received the city’ssupport as it has been shown that the solarpower plant will not have an impact on cul-tivated land, or any land identified in termsof the city’s biodiversity network.“It also does not pose a threat to the safe-

ty,wellbeing, andhealth of the surroundingcommunity, given the isolated location andscale,” said Kannenberg.“Given the nature and scale of the propo-

sed facility, the rural hinterland is the onlypractical option for the provision of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.“We foresee that this solar power plant

will reduce our carbon footprint and aid injob creation.”Mitigatory measures, in line with the vi-

sual impact assessment, would be put inplace.

All the panels in the proposed solar power plant in Durbanville can turn towards sunlight,similar to sunflowers.

The “We Luv Wine” festival, now in its se-cond year, was launched at Villiera Wineson Thursday.The festival, which will return to Cape-

Gate in August, nominated The PebblesProject as their official charity beneficiarythis year.The Pebbles Project, which was founded

in 2004, supports children from disadvanta-ged farmworker communities in the SouthAfrican winelands.The organisation’s work currently im-

pacts the lives of over 780 children aged 0-18years.“Our work supports children, teenagers,

With the tax return filing date looming clo-ser, countless taxpayers have fallen victimto an elaborate scam.Promising a believable windfall, it is by

nomeans only the ignorant who have fallenfor it.Unsuspecting tax payers receive an email

from “SARSeFilingAlert”, informing themthat they have received a tax credit pay-ment into their bank accounts by Sars E-fi-ling.This amount could range from anything

from R2000 to R8000, making it in range ofthe average annual tax return payout.The person is then prompted to click on

a link in order to “confirm online epay-ment”, and it is on this link where the vic-tim is very cleverly deceived to give outtheir banking details.Once this is done, the scammers are

equippedwith the necessary information to

steal funds from your account at any time.The South African Revenue Service

(Sars) is aware of this scam and is currentlyinvestigating it.They warns tax payers to be extra vigi-

lant.“Many tax payers have already been

scammed and countless others has telepho-ned to enquire about this email,” says aspokesperson at Sars who warns tax payersnot to respond to this email.“The particular email address do not be-

long to us and Sars will never prompt anyo-ne, evenE-filers, to provide banking details.If a payment is to be made by us, we willautomatically deposit it into your bank ac-count,” he says.“In addition tax return filing date only

opens on 1 July, and no return payoutscould have been made yet,” he adds.Sars urges all tax payers to rather contact

them at their contact centre on 0800 00 7277,if they should be unsure about anythingSars related payments.

Chilblains can be uncomfortable, butthey rarely, however, cause any permanentdamage and will normally heal within aweek or two if further exposure to the coldis avoided.

Chilblains are the result of an abnormalreaction to the cold. When the skin is cold,blood vessels near its surface get narrower.If the skin is then exposed to heat, theblood vessels become wider.

If this happens too quickly, blood can le-ak into the surrounding tissue. This isthought to be the reason for the swellingand itchiness associated with chilblains.

Most people don’t need to seek medicaladvice, however, you should see your GPor chiropodist for advice if you have severeor recurring chilblains, or if they don’t im-prove within a few weeks. You should alsoseek medical advice if you think your skinmay have become infected.

If you are susceptible to chilblains, youcan reduce your risk of developing themby limiting your exposure to the cold, loo-king after your feet and taking steps to im-prove your circulation.

A number of self-help measures canhelp, including:

wearing warm clothes and ensuring yo-ur home is well heated; keeping active;stopping smoking; avoiding tight-fittingshoes and boots.

Chilblains are uncomfortable but willnormally heal on its own within aweek or two.

It’s become the short-hand termfornon-surgi-cal anti-ageing interventions. Justwhat is thistoxin, Botox, that so many are turning to?

Botox (botulinim toxin), used for both cos-metic and medical interventions, is a purifiedand diluted form of the clostridium botuli-num bacteria. Its beauty lies in its ability torelax the muscle that has been injected.

Botoxblocks thenerve receptors that inner-vate the muscle injected. This stops the mus-cle from being able to receive signals to con-tract, which means the overlying skin smoot-hes over and wrinkles cannot deepen.

The hard facts are, however, that while thistreatment is cheaper than a surgical facelift,the effect is only temporary and follow-upsare needed to maintain the effect. The durati-on of the effect of Botox depends on anumberof factors includingmusclemass and size, skinthickness, ethnicity and gender.

Today doctors recommend that people startusing Botox from the age of around 27 to 30.Some practitioners also advise it as a preven-tative measure to prevent wrinkles in the fu-ture, and to delay cosmetic surgery.

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding,have an infection or have a neurological disea-se or affliction such as Bell’s palsy, shouldsteer clear from Botox. And remember this isnot the elixir of youth. If your expectationsare to return to your 18-year-old visage, thenbest you lower them.

Temporary bruising is the most commonside effect. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48hours, can occur, but this is rare. Some pa-tients also develop eyebrow or eyelid ptosiscaused by the toxin migrating into the sur-

rounding area and causing temporary paraly-sis. It’s disconcerting but does pass.

Another side effect is the emotional one:disappointment. Somepatients have unrealis-tic expectations of the result, which is why aprior consultation is vital.

For Botox, you should go to someone whois trained in theusage, dosage andapplication.

In fact, it should only be applied by a doctor,in a sterile environment,whohas been trainedin the administration of the product.

Depending on the practitioner and thenumber of areas injected in one sitting, pa-tients can expect the procedure to last 15 to30 minutes. The effect of the Botox is directlyrelated to the number of units used per area.

Sixteen people were injured on mon-day morning when a taxi overturnedon the N1 near the Winelands one stopin Kraaifontein.

“When ER24 paramedics arrived onscene, they found a taxi lying on its si-de near an embankment. Fellow moto-rists had stopped and offered assistan-ce to the injured,” said Russel Meiringfrom ER24’s media office.

Metro services had to close the hig-hway for an hour to allow emergencyworkers to work safely.

Russel said paramedics began theirtreatment of the 16 patients found onthe scene, while provincial serviceshad to erect a ladder across the em-bankment to allow the patients to bepassed across.

“Once all the patients were movedacross the embankment, they weretransported to various hospitals in thearea for further medical treatment,”he said.

The exact cause of the collision isnot yet known but local authoritieswere on scene for further investigati-ons.

stop traffic violations? No, wemust correct it ourselves: stopwhere and when you must stop,it is the correct thing forlaw-abiding citizens to do.

But if transgressors cannotabide by the rule of law, the“broken windows policy” ofNYPD fame must be implement-ed to curb urban disorder andanti-social behaviour. It is herewhere AARTO’s point deduc-tion system and the new heavytraffic fines must be felt to thefull extent of the law.What is most worryingly is

could only assume Koert Meyerhas not experienced the loss ofa loved one through crime.This country is rife with such

problems, clearly without asuccessful deterrent. I guesseating human hearts, hackingpeople to death, raping youngchildren, setting them alight orremoving their intestines iswithin some peoples’ comfortzones, but not within mine.I wonder if you have any

children? Drugs are the orderof the day, as is house break-in,armed robbery and the brutalkillings of our doctors, farmersand loved ones.The potential murderers you

refer to are the ones whoabolish the laws which wouldterminate these ruthless killers,leaving the innocent vulnerableand defenceless. It’s only amatter of time before you too,become a victim unless youhave turned your house intoFort Knox.If you really have such

sympathy for those killers, youcan foot their bills while theyawait parole. I’ll rather pay mytaxes towards the innocent andneedy homeless people.

“It’s definitely for the love of it,” saysIlse Els, manager of the organisationthat daily opens its door and cupbo-

ards to empower those less fortunate.She and 15 others - ofwhom10 are employ-

ed fulltime and six are permanent volun-teers - practice their “calling” froma big oldhouse in Bellville.

At the offices of the Metro EvangelicalServices, or MES, the team’s main purposeis to “teach people to fish”.

One of these projects is their GROW jobrehabilitation project which aspires to“make the unemployable employable”, saysIlse.

“You see, God uses us all. There are nonemore or less important than the other. The-re are none more or less useful. There is aplace for us all,” she says.

MES Cape Town originated from the Bell-ville CareMission in 1999. From 2006 to 2008the Mission’s focus shifted from solely be-ing a church for street people, to holistic re-habilitation and MES Cape Town was esta-blishedwhen the two organisationsmergedin November 2008.

Sustainable solutionsMES’s key aim countrywide is to provide

sustainable solutions to poverty in CapeTown, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth andKempton Park, Ilse says.

The office in Cape Town provides accessto services to the homeless and vulnerablecommunity of the northern suburbs.

Key focus areas include poverty alleviati-on and community enrichment, skills trai-ning and enterprise development, and soci-al services.

These three core business units offer ser-vices such as spiritual guidance to those in

need in shelters and on the streets, and soci-al relief in the form of soup kitchens and ou-treaches to the street community.

They also provide a safe place to stay forclients on MES programmes for the durati-on of their intervention, and skills trainingfor people between 18 and 35 who possessa measure of vocational skills in order tohelp them find work and earn an income.

Transparency and integrityIlse says they employ trained clients in

various jobs and createmore job opportuni-ties. Then there’s their development planfor each client, to help them reunite withtheir family, or rehabilitate.

“All this is done through support withcompassion, love and care,” Ilse says.

The philosophy underpinning their ope-ration is Christian discipline with respectand fairness, accountability with strongand clear roles, and sound financial proce-dures with transparency and integrity.

Ilse says MES in 2012/2013 served 8 823meals, provided clothing to 732 people, as-sisted 278 people to compile CVs, and 806clients were assisted through the GROWprogramme.

Besides offering financial support, orga-nisations and their staff can get involved ina project through participating in outrea-ches such as onMandelaDay, corporate ser-vice days, weekend outreaches, by cyclingthe PicknPay Argus Tour or participatingin MES’s Dirtopia mountain bike event.

“MES is 27-years-old this year and has de-cided to launch a sustainability trust wheredonors have the opportunity to give the or-ganisation a special gift – such as shares, le-gacies or finances that will guarantee ourfuture,” Ilse says.

MES is also BBBEE compliant and an 18Atax certificate can be issued for donationsmade.

“Most important for us, this is also a wayof givingback to the community thatwe ser-ve. A portion of the proceeds will go to theHyprop Foundation for distribution to de-serving charities in our area.”

Snow Time begins at CapeGate on Satur-day 28 June and will be open Monday to Sa-turdays from 10:00 to 19:00.

On Sundays it is open from 10:00 to 17:30(last entry at 16:45).

Singer Petra Mans wears her invinci-ble heart on her sleeve.The bubbly, down to earth, twenty-

four-year-old’s music career received awell-deserved push after winning last ye-ar’sMaking of a Star competitionwith hersong, “My invincible heart”.Since winning the competition’s origi-

nal category, Petra has gone on to recordthe song and a music video for it, but the-re’s more material to come from her soon.Petra got her first taste of singing while

she was at school, when her grandmotherconvinced teachers to use her in a schoolproduction she was too shy to audition forherself.Once her teachers realised the quality

of her voice, they encouraged her to takesinging lessons, and she’s been using hervoice ever since. “It was love at first note,”she says.

Finding her voicePetra interprets “My invincible heart”,

written by her brother, Hèrjo Schoeman,as a song about finding your voice and yo-ur own strength, which is the story shetells in the music video for the song.“The music video is about struggling

and breaking through your struggles andembracing them,” she explains. “It’s aboutcomingout bigger, better and stronger. It’ssaying: ‘you will survive this’.”

Her management team are in the pro-cess of getting hold of television channels,but for now the video is available on You-Tube.Petra came across the entry form and

prize information for the Making of a Starcompetitionand, beingno stranger to com-petitions, she decided she had to enter.“If it wasn’t for Making of a Star I

wouldn’t have hadmy ownmusic video ora complete professional photo shoot,” she

says. Another highlight for Petra is all thenew people she has met and continues tomeet.Her single has been picked up by stati-

ons like RSG, MFM and FeelGood FM, butPetra’s next release will be an Afrikaanssong.“As Musiek Groen Was”, written by JJ

Brits, will be released within the nextmonth. “He’s a great friend of mine and afantastic writer,” Petra says.The two have about 12 other songs

they’ve written together which they hopeto release over the course of the next year.

Control and composureWhen she isn’t singing alone, Petra also

sings with the Canticum Novum choir,which is a slight adjustment for her. Sin-ging with the choir has taught her controland composure.“You can’t just let loose and sing,” she

jokes.She has recently started working with

the Stellenbosch School of Rock and singswith their band. Also in the pipeline is anappearance on GoMusic.mobi, a new mo-bile site that streams live performances.Petra has a few performances at festi-

wash brush to good effect as they wontheir third Test against Scotland 46-33

at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town onSaturday afternoon.With earlier 56-29 and 41-25 wins from the

first two Tests under their belts, the Proteaswill be off to next month’s CommonwealthGames loaded with confidence.Despite the 3-0 series defeat, the Thistles

improved with every outing and gave theProteas a great chance to work on areas oftheir game that needed attention.Despitewinning all three tests, theProteas

started off nervously, trailing 1-2 after onlythree minutes of play.This seemed to serve as awake-up call, and

in the space of six minutes they had haltedthe Thistles’ charge by running up a 7-4 leadto rapturous applause from fans.As play moved towards the end of the first

quarter, the frenetic play gaveway to amorecautious approach onboth sides. During thisphase, Scotland were the more prolific sco-rers as theirmoves proved themore penetra-tive and they saw the quarter out with a 11-9lead.Another tense start by the Proteas who re-

sumed with two line-up changes made for aslow fight-back, which needed some threeminutes play for them to draw level at 12-allas the local fans roared their delight.A two-minute injury time-out gave the coa-

ches a chance for pep talks, and the teamsupped the tempo when play resumed.Thismade for excitingplay,with the score-

board seesawing as the ferocious action sawthe Proteas regain a slender 20-19 lead.This second-quarter display by the Thist-

les was possibly their best quarter perfor-mance and although they surrendered thelead, they still outscored their higher world-

ranked opponents by 10 goals to 9.The Proteas were far more assured and

confident under the postwhenplay resumed.It was great reward for vastly improved in-ter-passing which caused the Thistles to losetheir markers.It also helped the Proteas to play with less

anxiety and they made their efforts count asthey raced ahead 26-21 with nine minutesplay left in this quarter.Their third-quarter superiority in all pha-

ses of play saw the Proteas pull away witha massive 10-goal lead and carried on theirmarch to victory in the final quarter.
