The number of reported rapes in Bellvil-le have apparently dropped by an asto-nishing 83%.

Thiswas announcedbyBellville police du-ring a joint publicmeetingwith the Commu-nity Policing Forum on Thursday.The police released their quarterly crime

statistics and spoke about how the imple-mentation of the newly demarcated sectorswas faring.Head of visible policing, ColGertNel, rela-

yed the statistics.

He said among various other crimes, com-mon assault was up by 125%.Nel attributed this figure to two opposing

factions from the Democratic Republic ofCongo who were continuing the conflict intheir home country on the streets of Bellvil-le.“Bellville and Parow are hard hit by the

attacks and counter-attacks,” he said. “The-re’s the Brazzaville group in Bellville andtheir rivals who live mostly in Parow.”Regarding the “trio of robberies” - house

robbery, business robbery, and car hijac-king - Nel said they had seen a stabilisationin the number of incidents.

Where property crimes are concerned, hesaid residential burglaries were up by 25%,but burglaries at businesses premises wasdown by 44%.He said thefts out of cars, especially the

sort where cars were broken into at busyshopping centres such as Tyger Valley, hadstabilised. When it came to car theft, figureshad increased by about 10%.Nel concluded that for the month of May,

his officers had handled a total of 1 957 com-plaints in the three policing sectors, and hadmade 279 arrests.When asked what had caused the seemin-

gly impressive drop in rape figures, Nel at-

tributed it to the good work done by theirFamily and Child Protection Sexual Offen-ces Unit, or FCS.“Generally the majority of rapes in Bell-

ville are committed among the homeless po-pulation, especially where people are cluste-ring together for warmth and shelter.“In the last fewmonths the FCS has made

some excellent arrests,” Nel said.Colonel William Smith, head of the detec-

tive unit, said they had a number of succes-ses over the past months, with the senten-cing of the killer of a man from Ridgewoodto 70 years in jail, as the greatest success.

A Capetonian classical flautist is swim-ming her way into the history booksand raisingmoney for child cancer pa-

tients at, amongothers, theTygerbergpedia-tric oncology ward.Carina Bruwer, who stays in Tamboer-

skoof, is on a family holiday in Italy and hasmanaged to not only become the firstwomanto swim across the Bonifacio Straits fromItaly to France, but also the first to do a qua-druple crossing of the Messina Straits bet-ween Sicily and Calabria three days later.Carina swims without a wet suit or any

swimming aid under the banner of Swim forHope, a charity whose proceeds go to LittleFighters Cancer Trust.“We arrived in Sardinia two days ago,met

by an unprecedented storm and probably asa result, angry seas for the second half of thecrossing. A beautiful swim nevertheless,”she posted on her Facebook page about theBonifacio Straits crossing.

Challenging conditionsFor this challenge on 17 June, she had to

swim15kilometers inawind that causedhersupport boat to veer off course many times,but she crossed the strait in just under fourand a half hours.

“We expected her to finish in between sixand eight hours,” says Mandie Erasmus,spokesperson forLittle FightersCancerTrust(LFCT), where Carina’s Swim for Hope pro-ceeds go.Swim for Hope started in March 2013 when

Carina wanting to raise awareness and fundsfor children with cancer. She invited otheropen water swimmers to join her in a swimaround Cape Point. Thirteen swimmers jum-ped inwith her. That day themale and femalerecords were broken for this swim, the latterby Carina herself.

Crazy swims“She does the most amazingly crazy

swims!” saysMandie. “She is the onlywomanto have swum across False Bay. And thethings she does are not for the faint hearted.When she goes in there, it is just her and thewater. And it’s freezing cold in there.”Since that day inMarch last year, Swim for

Hope has raisedmore thanR100 000 for youngcancer patients.Mandie says what Carina has achieved is

muchmore than to raisemoney for sick child-ren.“She has caused one event to become a phi-

losophy. And nobody asked her to do it, shewants to get into that cold water, face hyper-thermia and sharks. She takes what she lovesand pays it forward.”

One of the organization’s most tangibleprojects isBag ofHope, throughwhich theydistribute bags filled with essential provi-sions to childrenwith cancer and theirmo-thers athospitals in themainpaediatric on-cology treatment centers in the WesternCape like Tygerberg, Red Cross Children’sHospital and St Joseph’s Home for Chroni-cally Ill, as well as approximately 20 CapeTown based childhood cancer affected fa-milies. Chilblains can be uncomfortable, butthey rarely, however, cause any permanentdamage and will normally heal within aweek or two if further exposure to the coldis avoided.

Chilblains are the result of an abnormalreaction to the cold. When the skin is cold,blood vessels near its surface get narrower.If the skin is then exposed to heat, theblood vessels become wider.

If this happens too quickly, blood can le-ak into the surrounding tissue. This isthought to be the reason for the swellingand itchiness associated with chilblains.

Most people don’t need to seek medicaladvice, however, you should see your GPor chiropodist for advice if you have severeor recurring chilblains, or if they don’t im-prove within a few weeks. You should alsoseek medical advice if you think your skinmay have become infected.

If you are susceptible to chilblains, youcan reduce your risk of developing themby limiting your exposure to the cold, loo-king after your feet and taking steps to im-prove your circulation.

A number of self-help measures canhelp, including:

wearing warm clothes and ensuring yo-ur home is well heated; keeping active;stopping smoking; avoiding tight-fittingshoes and boots.

Chilblains are uncomfortable but willnormally heal on its own within aweek or two.

It’s become the short-hand termfornon-surgi-cal anti-ageing interventions. Justwhat is thistoxin, Botox, that so many are turning to?

Botox (botulinim toxin), used for both cos-metic and medical interventions, is a purifiedand diluted form of the clostridium botuli-num bacteria. Its beauty lies in its ability torelax the muscle that has been injected.

Botoxblocks thenerve receptors that inner-vate the muscle injected. This stops the mus-cle from being able to receive signals to con-tract, which means the overlying skin smoot-hes over and wrinkles cannot deepen.

The hard facts are, however, that while thistreatment is cheaper than a surgical facelift,the effect is only temporary and follow-upsare needed to maintain the effect. The durati-on of the effect of Botox depends on anumberof factors includingmusclemass and size, skinthickness, ethnicity and gender.

Today doctors recommend that people startusing Botox from the age of around 27 to 30.Some practitioners also advise it as a preven-tative measure to prevent wrinkles in the fu-ture, and to delay cosmetic surgery.

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding,have an infection or have a neurological disea-se or affliction such as Bell’s palsy, shouldsteer clear from Botox. And remember this isnot the elixir of youth. If your expectationsare to return to your 18-year-old visage, thenbest you lower them.

Temporary bruising is the most commonside effect. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48hours, can occur, but this is rare. Some pa-tients also develop eyebrow or eyelid ptosiscaused by the toxin migrating into the sur-

rounding area and causing temporary paraly-sis. It’s disconcerting but does pass.

Another side effect is the emotional one:disappointment. Somepatients have unrealis-tic expectations of the result, which is why aprior consultation is vital.

For Botox, you should go to someone whois trained in theusage, dosage andapplication.

In fact, it should only be applied by a doctor,in a sterile environment,whohas been trainedin the administration of the product.

Depending on the practitioner and thenumber of areas injected in one sitting, pa-tients can expect the procedure to last 15 to30 minutes. The effect of the Botox is directlyrelated to the number of units used per area.

“It’s definitely for the love of it,” saysIlse Els, manager of the organisationthat daily opens its door and cupbo-

ards to empower those less fortunate.She and 15 others - of whom 10 are employ-

ed fulltime and six are permanent volun-teers - practice their “calling” from a big oldhouse in Bellville.

At the offices of theMetroEvangelical Ser-vices, or MES, the team’s main purpose isto “teach people to fish”.

One of these projects is their GROW jobrehabilitation project which aspires to“make the unemployable employable”, saysIlse.

“You see, God uses us all. There are nonemore or less important than the other. Thereare nonemore or less useful. There is a placefor us all,” she says.

MES Cape Town originated from the Bell-ville Care Mission in 1999. From 2006 to 2008theMission’s focus shifted from solely beinga church for street people, to holistic rehabi-litation and MES Cape Town was establis-hed when the two organisations merged inNovember 2008.

Sustainable solutionsMES’s key aim countrywide is to provide

sustainable solutions to poverty in CapeTown, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth andKempton Park, Ilse says.

The office in Cape Town provides accessto services to the homeless and vulnerablecommunity of the northern suburbs.

Key focus areas include poverty alleviati-on and community enrichment, skills trai-ning and enterprise development, and socialservices.

These three core business units offer ser-

vices such as spiritual guidance to those inneed in shelters and on the streets, and soci-al relief in the form of soup kitchens and ou-treaches to the street community.

They also provide a safe place to stay forclients onMESprogrammes for thedurationof their intervention, and skills training forpeople between 18 and 35 who possess a me-asure of vocational skills in order to helpthem find work and earn an income.

Transparency and integrityIlse says they employ trained clients in va-

rious jobs and create more job opportuni-ties. Then there’s their development plan foreach client, to help them reunite with theirfamily, or rehabilitate.

“All this is done through support withcompassion, love and care,” Ilse says.

The philosophyunderpinning their opera-tion is Christian discipline with respect andfairness, accountability with strong and cle-ar roles, and sound financial procedureswith transparency and integrity.

Ilse saysMES in 2012/2013 served 8 823me-als, provided clothing to 732 people, assisted278 people to compile CVs, and 806 clientswere assisted through the GROW program-me.

Besides offering financial support, organi-sations and their staff can get involved in aproject through participating in outreachessuch as on Mandela Day, corporate servicedays, weekend outreaches, by cycling thePicknPay Argus Tour or participating inMES’s Dirtopia mountain bike event.

“MES is 27-years-old this year and has de-cided to launch a sustainability trust wheredonors have the opportunity to give the or-ganisation a special gift – such as shares, le-gacies or finances thatwill guarantee our fu-ture,” Ilse says.

MES is also BBBEE compliant and an 18A

tax certificate can be issued for donationsmade. Some corporates are already perma-nently on board with MES, Ilse adds.

Once amonth Ilse and her crew take someof these business people out on their nightti-me streetwalk outreach.

“It puts them in the shoes of the people outthere in the cold. It changes their thinking.And that is what we need – for people to un-derstand.”

And this, she says, is how they hope to“change the heart of the city”.

“I know I’m gorgeous,” chuckles DanniCarrera Beanz.

“But looks aren’t that important tome. I’m more of a thinking type. And a dig-ging type. Yes! Digging holes, now that isspecial!”

Danni digs, but she has plenty more to of-fer than just holes in the ground.

She is a “therapy dog”.And her human, Edith Kriel of Jelly Be-

anz, is also a therapist.TygerBurger chatted to the two recently

about the “therapy dog” initiative by the Ta-ble View-based non-profit organisation thatgives hope to children affected by trauma

and abuse.Edith was easier to understand, primarily

because of her ability to speak.“We called her Danni so a child could see

her as a boy or a girl,” says Edith. “As partof Danni’s work, children might project theirown issues onto her, so they can choose whatthey want Danni to be.”

Danni, who has been involved in playfultug-of-war with a rope, stops briefly and tiltsher head quizzically.

“So I’m a kind of quasi-gender 11-month-oldNewfoundland dog? It has a ring to it. Yes...I can see where you’re going with this, hu-man!”

She grabs the rope again and grapples withit.

Edith continues: “Her surname, Beanz, is

self-explanatory, and her middle name co-mes from the Porche Carerra model. Por-che were our initial sponsors.”

Danni is still undergoing obedience trai-ning, but she has already left her mark onJelly Beanz.

Not on the carpet, no.“We went to a school recently and talked

about howdogs could beused inwork, suchas police dogs. After the assembly a littlegirl went to her teacher and told her abouttrauma in her own life, something she hasnever told anyone before. The girl thenasked the teacher if she could go talk toDanni about it – and the lady who belongsto Danni. I become sort of insignificant, be-cause Danni is now the drawcard,” ex-plains Edith.

Food loverDanni puts his paw on Edith and yips:

“There, there human. You are also impor-tant. I don’t know what I would do if thereweren’t someone to scratchmy tummy eve-ry day.”

Edith adds inaudibly: “ss...sss....sss..s”“Excuse me?” I ask while Danni cocks

one of her ears.Edith speaks a little louder: “She also li-

kes food...”Danni sits bolt upright and pants: “You

said ‘food’. I heard that!”The dog looks at me insistently.“Did you hear that? My human just said

‘food’! I like it, yes! Delicious food... Yum-my!”

Northlink College hosted a workshop fortwenty Western Cape EMDC North regionprimary school prinicipals recently.

The workshop was aimed at empoweringprincipals working with children affectedby social ills.

The aim was to make principals aware

of the variety of career opportunities avai-lable at Northlink College. They were alsoadvised to inform younger learners time-ously about the importance of subject choi-ces.

Guest speakers touched upon the issuesof child trauma and the role teachers and

the school plays in creating a safe environ-ment for children who face difficulties el-sewhere. The principals were also offeredtips on how to help learners and parentscope with challenges, the building of self-esteem and behavioural problems.

“We are happy that we could create a net-

working space to discuss the future growthand development of schools in Cape Town.Working together will allow schools to riseto new heights and create a better learningenvironment for learners,” said René Bon-zet, head of the marketing department atNorthlink.

With the tax return filing date looming clo-ser, an elaborate email scam is doing therounds.Promising a believablewindfall, it is byno

means only the ignorant who have fallen forit.Unsuspecting tax payers receive an email

from “SARS eFiling Alert”, informing themthat they received a payment of some sortinto their bank accounts by Sars E-filing.This amount could range from anything

from R2000 to R8000, making it in range ofthe average annual tax return payout.The person is then prompted to click on

a link in order to “confirm online epay-ment”, and it is on this linkwhere the victim

is deceived into give out their banking de-tails.If this is done, the scammers are equipped

with the necessary information to stealfunds from the account at any time.The SouthAfricanRevenue Service (Sars)

is currently investigating the scam.They warn tax payers to be extra vigilant.“Many taxpayershavealreadybeenscam-

med and countless others have called to en-quire about this email,” says a Sars spokes-person who warned tax payers not to res-pond to this email.“The particular email address do not be-

long to us and Sars will never prompt anyo-ne, even E-filers, to provide banking details.If a payment is tobemadebyus,wewill auto-maticallydeposit it intoyourbankaccount,”he says.

A graduation ceremony at the Gene LouwTraffic College in Brackenfell on Fridaynight saw 34 new local traffic taking on thechallenge of policing provincial roads.The Minister of Transport and Public

Works, Donald Grant, was the keynote spea-ker at the event.Ministry spokesperson Sanele Nyoka said

the graduates were trained according to therequirements of the safety and security sec-tor education and training authority, localgovernment sector education and trainingauthority, as well as Road Traffic Manage-ment Corporation (RTMC) guidelines as tohow to examine vehicles and licences.Other skills acquired include firearm

competency training, driver training - inclu-ding articulatedmotor vehicle andmotor cy-cle training - as well as first aid and fire

why they’ve never played in the area before,but once they realised that this was the case,they set about booking a show this side ofthe world.Mac Stanley has never been the kind of

band that gigged every other weekendthough, choosing instead to make theirshows bigger or more special.“We’ve always been very aware of not sa-

turating the market with shows,” Andy ex-plains, but this doesn’t necessarily meanthey aren’t playing.They perform many corporate or private

SingerPetraManswears her invincibleheart on her sleeve.The bubbly, down to earth, twenty-

four-year-old’s music career received a ma-jor boost after winning last year’s Makingof a Star competition, with her song, “Myinvincible heart”.Since winning the competition’s original

category, Petra has gone on to record thesongandamusicvideo for it, but there’smo-re to come from her soon.Petra got her first taste of singing in

schoolwhenher grandmother convinced te-achers to use her in a school production shewas too shy to audition for herself.Once her teachers realised she had a good

voice, they encouraged her to take singinglessons, and she’s been using her voice eversince. “It was love at first note,” she says.

Breaking throughPetra interprets “My invincible heart”,

written by her brother Hèrjo Schoeman, asa song about finding your voice and yourown strength, which is the story she tellsin the music video for the song.“The music video is about struggling and

breaking through your struggles and em-bracing them,” she explains. “It’s about co-ming out bigger, better and stronger. It’ssaying: ‘you will survive this’.”Her management team are in the process

of contacting television channels, but fornow the video is available on YouTube.Petra came across the entry form and pri-

ze information for theMaking of a Star com-petition and, beingno stranger to competiti-ons, she decided: “I have to do it”.“If it wasn’t for Making of a Star I

wouldn’t have had my own music video ora complete professional photo shoot,” shesays. Another highlight from the competiti-onwas all the newpeople she met and conti-nues to meet.Her single has been picked up by stations

like RSG, MFM and FeelGood FM, but Pe-tra’s next release will be anAfrikaans song.

“As Musiek Groen Was”, written by JJBrits, will be released within the nextmonth. “He’s a great friend of mine and afantastic writer,” Petra says.The twohave about 12 other songs they’ve

written together which they hope to releaseover the course of the next year.

Control and composureWhen she isn’t singing alone, Petra also

sings with the Canticum Novum choir,which is a slight adjustment for her. Sin-ging with the choir has taught her controland composure.“You can’t just let loose and sing,” she jo-

kes.Shehas recently startedworkingwith the

Stellenbosch School of Rock and sings withtheir band. Also in the pipeline is an appea-rance on GoMusic.mobi, a new mobile sitethat streams live performances.Petra has a few performances at festivals

like the Biltong Festival and Winter Won-derland lined up, but fans can keep an eyeonher Facebook page to stay up to datewithher shows.
