Presidents Report
Last Tuesday Rob Wansbrough represented the Club at a thank you morning tea provided by Telopea Public School. They were so appreciative of the camp we supported (we helped 4 students cover the costs, plus a bit towards the bus for all) that they gave Rob a video of the students enjoying the camp. Rob advised that the school were very appreciative of the support we gave.
The meeting of 10th December was changed to a youth one at relatively short notice. Rosemary organised that our RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment) candidates meet the Club and tell us a bit about themselves. Both Merle Runde and Sarah Collins are 14 years old, and have just finished year 9. I was very impressed with all their interests and the programs they are involved in. They will certainly embrace the weekend at RYPEN and get the maximum benefit. Sarah’s father, Peter also came along. Our RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) candidate, Adam Derriman also came to the meeting, and told us a bit about himself, and what he hopes to achieve at RYLA. This was made
difficult by the fact the RYLA program is kept secret until it is experienced (to maximise impact). I am sure Adam will benefit a lot from his experience.
Rob Wansbrough came along to talk about Telopea Public School, his visit to the thank you morning tea and to show the video of the students at camp. From the video we could see the impact it had on the 16 students who went. Rob explained how beneficial our financial support was and how appreciative the school were to get this support. This is an excellent community need that we supported and all members appreciated Rob sharing this message, and agreed that we should support Telopea again if the need arises.
This was an excellent meeting, and my thanks to Rosemary and Rob for making it happen.
On Wednesday 12th Dec there is a Board meeting at my place, 7:30pm. We need to resolve a very important issue regards the audit of the 2011‐2012 accounts.
Next Thursday evening (13th Dec) we have a call for Santa’s helpers to prepare the Tree of Joy gifts, 7:30pm at David Turnbull’s (bring some scissors and tape dispenser…. also some refreshments). This is as much a social activity as a working bee. We prepare the many donated gifts for those in our community who would otherwise miss out.
Next Monday’s meeting (17th Dec) is our Christmas meeting and the final meeting for the year. It is a Kris Kringle, so partners and members should bring a present of value up to $10. Santa and his helper will be there. In addition, Beth Ferguson will be there to officially receive her Rotary blazer which she will take on her exchange to Denmark. She leaves 18th Jan for her 12 months away.
I wish all our members, partners and friends a Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

Caitlin Gilchrist’s December Report Feliz Navidad!!! Merry Christmas to you all from Spain!! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. I am looking forward to Christmas Eve with my Spanish grandmother and family in Burgos City. We will have a family meal ‘ Noche Buena’ and go to midnight mass ‘La Misa del Gallo’. We are then travelling home to Tres Cantos on Christmas Day which is the quietest day over Christmas in Spain to prepare for our trip to Paris, staying at Disneyland!! New Year ‘Noche Vieja’ will be celebrated in Madrid with school and Rotary friends and then 6th January is the Festival of the Three Kings ‘Los Reyes Magos’ and our gift giving. My amazing Rotary exchange is complete on January 12th and I leave with sadness my family and my friends in Spain. I look forward to seeing you all on my return and wish to thank you very sincerely for the opportunity you have given me in 2012 to represent Rotary in Spain.
Celebrating Thanksgiving dinner with the Rotary exchange students in my district.
Love and best wishes, Caitlin

Life in the Australian Army... Text of a letter from a kid from Eromanga to Mum and Dad. (For Those of you not in the know, Eromanga is a small town, west of Quilpie in the far south west of Queensland ) Dear Mum & Dad, I am well. Hope youse are too. Tell me big brothers Doug and Phil that the Army is better than workin' on the farm ‐ tell them to get in bloody quick smart before the jobs are all gone! I wuz a bit slow in settling down at first, because ya don't hafta get outta bed until 6am. But I like sleeping in now, cuz all ya gotta do before brekky is make ya bed and shine ya boots and clean ya uniform. No bloody cows to milk, no calves to feed, no feed to stack ‐ nothin'!! Ya haz gotta shower though, but its not so bad, coz there's lotsa hot water and even a light to see what ya doing! At brekky ya get cereal, fruit and eggs but there's no kangaroo steaks or possum stew like wot Mum makes. You don't get fed again until noon and by that time all the city boys are buggered because we've been on a 'route march' ‐ geez its only just like walking to the windmill in the back paddock!! This one will kill me brothers, Doug and Phil with laughter. I keep getting medals for shootin' ‐ dunno why. The bullseye is as big as a bloody possum's bum and it don't move and it's not firing back at ya like the Johnsons did when our big scrubber bull got into their prize cows before the Ekka last year! All ya gotta do is make yourself comfortable and hit the target ‐ it's a piece of piss!! You don't even load your own cartridges, they comes in little boxes, and ya don't have to steady yourself against the rollbar of the roo shooting truck when you reload! Sometimes ya gotta wrestle with the city boys and I gotta be real careful coz they break easy ‐ it's not like fighting with Doug and Phil and Jack and Boori and Steve and Muzza all at once like we do at home after the muster. Turns out I'm not a bad boxer either and it looks like I'm the best the platoon's got, and I've only been beaten by this one bloke from the Engineers ‐ he's 6 foot 5 and 15 stone and three pick handles across the shoulders and as ya know I'm only 5 foot 7 and eight stone wringin' wet, but I fought him till the other blokes carried me off to the boozer. I can't complain about the Army ‐ tell the boys to get in quick before word gets around how bloody good it is.
