PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Working Towards the HSC Examinations This term is a very hectic time for our Year 12 students as they complete important school assessments and prepare for the Trial HSC examinations, which begin early next term. It is usually around this stage of Year 12 when HSC students across the state feel mounting pressure that comes from

having to complete important assessment tasks, attend classes, and at the same time, find time to study in preparation for the trial exams.

The school has a range of structures in place to assist students as they progress towards the HSC examinations in October. It is very important that Year 12 students and parents seek assistance from school staff should it be necessary. This may include speaking to Year 12 Adviser, Mrs Leadbitter; School Counsellor, Mrs Grunsell; Deputy Principal supporting Year 12, Mr O’Byrne; Head Teacher Student Wellbeing, Mrs Campbell; myself; or any of our Head Teachers and teachers. It is also important that those who are participating in the ‘10% On Top’ mentoring program continue to work with their teacher mentors during this term.

Any student who is feeling overwhelmed or anxious during this term or next should seek immediate support from parents, family and the school. I ask that parents contact the school when issues arise so that we can work together to find a solution to the problem. Impact of Change At the recent Years 7 and 8 Parent–Teacher interviews, Year 7 parents who are new to our school commented to me about how busy our school is each day. The parents spoke glowingly of the wonderful curriculum enrichment programs that we run, and of their amazement at the dedication of teachers and other staff in offering such a broad curriculum.

I am always conscious of the increasing pressure on schools, especially comprehensive high schools such as ours, and these comments prompted me to reflect further on some of the extra calls on the time of teachers that they are asked to accommodate. Just this week, there was media attention which focused on the increasing demands on teachers. This again highlighted for me the fact that, despite all of the changes that are impacting on us, Pennant Hills High School continues to provide a very broad range of enrichment activities beyond the classroom.

In my Principal’s Report for the Week 10 edition of Jumbunna in May 2012, I wrote, ‘We are undoubtedly entering a period of enormous change in education in NSW over the coming years.’ Now, three years later, some of the major reforms that are impacting on us include: Australian Curriculum implementation; Strategic Planning 2015–17; Performance and Development Framework for Teachers; Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD); the School Excellence Framework; Stage 3 of Learning Management and Business Reform (LMBR); Local Schools, Local Decisions; Every Student, Every School; Australian Professional Standards for Teachers; Great Teaching Inspired Learning; BOSTES new accreditation systems; the introduction of BYOD following the end of the Digital Education Revolution program; and many more initiatives of a lesser nature, but which will still impact on schools. While members of our staff work conscientiously on the implementation of these compulsory ongoing agendas, we continue to remain firmly focused each day on our core business of providing the best possible educational opportunities for our students.

Annual School Report The 2014 Annual School Report is now available on the school website. The report outlines the many programs offered at our school last year, as well as showcasing the many successes and achievements of our students and staff. I thank the members of the Annual School Report Team for their efforts in producing such an excellent overview of our school’s programs.

Strategic Plan 2015–2017 We have also placed the School Plan for the next three years on our website. This plan was developed over the past nine months following extensive consultation with parents, students and staff.

Parent–Teacher Evenings So far this year, there have been two evenings during which parents have had the opportunity to discuss with teachers the progress of their child/ren in Years 7, 8, 11 and 12. The remaining interviews for Years 9 and 10 will be held on Wednesday 22 July (Term 3, Week 2). It is very important that parents discuss with class teachers any notification they have received regarding unsatisfactory progress in a course. This allows us to work with parents and students to resolve issues that, if not addressed, may compromise a student’s attainment of an important credential. I also remind all parents that teachers will respond as soon as possible to enquiries made at times other than parent–teacher interviews. On that same evening (22 July 2015), at 7.00pm, we will also hold the important information session in the MPC for parents and Year 10 students who are preparing to select courses of study for Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12).

Special thanks to Charlene Stewart who has dedicated boundless energy, time and enthusiasm to establishing the Penno Pacers team and sourcing support from the school community and beyond. We are also grateful to our online sponsors whose donations are already fast approaching $1000. With funds already raised, combined with further online donations and the proceeds of a silent auction and other fund-raisers to be held during the Relay, we are hoping to achieve, and perhaps even exceed, our target of $5000. And the good news continues … it’s not too late to support this very worthy cause. Information on how to sponsor our team can be found on page 7 of this edition of Jumbunna and, if you would like to join the Penno Pacers, there will be an opportunity to register at the venue on Saturday. Our Relay walkers would also love to have visitors call by the tent during the event, especially overnight, when their spirits and energy levels may well need a boost.

There are many people to thank for making the MUFTI day such a success: our P&C Association who donated the sausages; Pennant Hills Bakery and Brumby’s Thornleigh who each donated 10 loaves of bread; members of our SRC who worked tirelessly in setting up and running the sausage sizzle; and Chloe and her mum who made and donated 128 cupcakes, all decorated in the Relay for Life theme.

School Fees and Voluntary Contributions Thank you to the families who have already paid compulsory subject fees, and who have assisted the school by making additional voluntary contributions and P&C donations for their child. The school will soon send reminders to parents for outstanding amounts. Your assistance in making these payments as soon as possible will be appreciated, as this will allow us to meet our commitments to suppliers and to purchase required resources and equipment. PARTY Program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth)

Another group of our Year 11 students participated recently in a one-day program at Royal North Shore Hospital. The program included a seminar on the effects and consequences of serious head trauma, both incidental and intentional; the risks associated with driving whilst distracted or intoxicated; and the processes and benefits associated with organ donation. Students were taken on a tour of the hospital, which included a visit to both the Emergency Unit and ICU wards, where students saw the equipment used to treat injuries of varying degrees of severity. The students also participated in interactive sessions with some of the allied health care staff, such as physiotherapists, nutritionists and occupational therapists who work at the hospital. A number of our Year 11 students have spoken with me about the value of the program. I thank Mr Symons for his organisation of the excursion and support of this initiative. Hills Relay for Life We are proud to have entered a team—Penno Pacers—in this year’s Hills Relay for Life in support of the NSW Cancer Council. Congratulations to all of our team members who will walk in shifts throughout the 24-hour relay. The funds raised will support local programs to help defeat cancer.

I wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts of PDHPE teacher, Mrs Charlene Stewart, who initiated our school’s participation in this year’s event, and thank her for the many hours she has devoted to the efficient organisation and management of our team. Geoff Wing Principal

MONSTER SUCCESS FOR FORMER STUDENTS

Two Pennant Hills High School graduates—Adam Little (2002) and Marianne McAllister (2003)—are chasing success on the international app stores. Their app, FlingMonster, was recently launched internationally, attempting to be the first successful contender to the Angry Birds slingshot genre. FlingMonster is a game app set in the fictional world of Planet X, where players must use various monster abilities to defend against the invading miners.

Adam and Marianne have spent the past 18 months developing a physics game engine to produce high quality games to compete on the international stage. Adam said, ‘If it wasn’t for the care and commitment I received whilst studying Visual Arts and Design at Pennant Hills High School, we would never be in this wonderful position.’

good condition would be very welcome.

Items for the Used Clothing Pool may be handed in at the school office between

8.00am and 3.45pm on school days.

SAY ‘NO’ TO BULLYING The National Day of Action Against Bullying, held on 20 March 2015, provided a great opportunity to raise community awareness of such an important social issue. Associated with this event, Interrelate’s Anti-Bullying Poster Competition drew thousands of entries from across the state. Congratulations to Year 8 student, Elisa, whose entry was highly commended. The competition encouraged young people to relate to the scenario of their friend being bullied and consider how they could make a difference by stopping the bullying rather than being a passive bystander. Originally targeting primary school students, this year’s competition attracted such strong interest in the high school section that the organisers plan to introduce a separate event for high schools in the future.

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING - A REMINDER FROM HORNSBY SHIRE COUNCIL - Rules relating to driving and parking around schools are designed to provide a level of protection for students at all times, but especially at ’peak’ periods immediately before and after school hours. The following information is provided by Hornsby Shire Council to assist drivers in keeping our children safe.

NO PARKING

Drivers may stop in this zone to drop off or pick up passengers or goods for a maximum of two minutes.

The driver MUST remain in or within three metres of the vehicle at all times.

The vehicle must not be left unattended.

If times of operation are shown on the sign, the restriction only applies during the times shown.

No Parking zones can also be used to drop off and pick up children.

NO STOPPING

Stopping is not permitted at any time.

If times of operation are shown on the sign, the restriction only applies during the times shown.

BUS ZONES

Drivers are not permitted to stop within a bus zone at any time.

If times of operation are shown on the sign, the restriction only applies during the times shown.

DOUBLE PARKING

Drivers are not permitted to stop or park between the centre of the road and another vehicle that is parked at the side of the road.

Double parking decreases visibility for motorists and pedestrians, and significantly reduces road safety around schools.
