South Western School District
2014 Summer
Reading and Math Ideas
See what fun reading and math
can be in the summer, too!
Take a look inside…
Dear Parents:
Summer is such a fun time for our children and families. It is a
great time to play outside, enjoy the sunshine, and get re-
energized. Summer is also a time to continue developing
READING and MATH skills.
With your help and support, as parents, you can help our
students continue to grow in both reading and math. Let’s
avoid any summer slide of skills with a fun reading and
math focus each day.
That is why your child needs your help!
Please schedule time each day for quiet reading time.
This can be 10-20 minutes every day, and can be
done in a variety of ways – silent reading, reading
with a parent, reading to a sibling….just enjoy!
Math skills can also be a focus throughout the
summer through the suggestions included in this
packet. Many websites and Study Island can be utilized by
your child with ease!
Thank you for your continued support of your child!
Enjoy your summer!

Study Island on line. Keep reading!
Listed below are suggested reading titles that were
created by Dr. Aileen Hower, our Reading Supervisor.
When possible, these books are leveled using the Fountas
and Pinnell reading levels. It is suggested that you look at
your child’s instructional reading level on June’s report
card, and select books that are close to, and just below, that
report card reading level. That’s where you will find your
son/daughter’s independent reading level which is just
right for summer reading.
