This are signs that we should not ignore

Sometimes they can be life threatening and it can

affect the baby and the mother

It can cause death in the mother or baby

It can cause premature delivery

Prolong hospital stay

1. FATIGUE AND BREATHLESSNESS

Normally a pregnant woman can feel tired due to increased

workload on the heart but it becomes abnormal when she

cannot stand by herself, feels fainty or cannot walk from the

room to the bathroom without help

PLAN: ensure good balanced diet

ensure haematinics use: folic acid, ferrobin plus,

pregnacare tablets

report any extreme breathlessness to the doctor: check bp,

pcv level

2. REDUCED FETAL KICKS

Normally a baby sleeps when the mother is

sleeping.

From the second trimester When a baby does not

move ( about 10 kicks per day) it is abnormal.

Plan: report to the hospital:

Fetal kick chart

Obstetric scan

Urgent delivery

3. EXCESSIVE VOMITING

Mild vomiting after brushing the teeth or in the early hours of

the morning is normal but when a pregnant woman vomits

every time of the day about 5-10 times a day it is abnormal

Plan: report to the hospital for :

evaluation: malaria, sepsis, etc.

admission into he ward: intravenous fluids to replace lost fluid

and electrolytes

4. FEVER

TEMPERATURE >37.5oC IS ABNORMAL. THIS MIGHT BE DUE TO AN INFECTION

MALARIA

UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION {COUGH}

UTI {PAINFUL URINATION}

if not treated can be harmful to the baby by causing IUGR and premature contraction before term

PLAN: report to the hospital for investigation of underlying cause and prompt treatment.

4. ABNORMAL VAGINAL DISCHARGE

whitish scanty vaginal discharge is still

permissible in pregnancy

abnormal: COPIUS whitish ITCHY discharge or

yellowish foul-smelling discharge

this can lead to spontaneous delivery of the baby

at any time also can lead to gonorrhea and

blindness in the baby

PLAN: report for HVS test and proper TREATMENT

6. PAINFUL URINATION

when a pregnant woman’s urine is painful,

smelling, cloudy or foamy, it signifies an on-going

infection in the urinary tract

pregnant women are prone to UTI because of

their low immune system

plan: report in the hospital for urine test and

treatment if need be.

7.PERSISTENT HEADACHE AND BLURRED VISION

Throbbing headache >3 hrs.

With blurred vision

Elevated bp

Leg and facial swelling

It can cause convulsion in pregnancy and immediate c/s

PLAN: reduce salt intake

report to the hospital immediately for prompt treatment

PLAN: report to the hospital for clarification

9.DRAINAGE OF LIQUOR BEFORE LABOUR

Whenever someone sees water before labour ,it is abnormal.

the person needs to be admitted and monitored.

VAGINAL BLEEDING

At anytime if you see bleeding either heavy or light get to the

hospital.

VAGINAL BLEEDING

It might be due to:

Normal: very early {ist week} light spot of blood

Threatened abortion

Placenta Previa {low placenta}

Abruptio placentae

CONCLUSION

Sinister signs in pregnancy are dangerous when

ignored.

Regular antenatal visit is vital to quickly identify

abnormal situations and for prompt treatment
